Morton Meng frowned as he walked coldly into the hospital. A moment ago, he had received a phone call from Halia. An important client suddenly fainted during a meeting and was sent to the hospital.
"What happened, Mars?" he asked as he approached Halia.
"We were going through some doc.u.ments regarding her husband's will and she suddenly fainted," Halia replied.
Morton looked at Halia with suspicion and turned to the doctor who just arrived, "Why did Mrs. Qian suddenly faint?"
"We ran some tests on Mrs. Qian. There's nothing wrong with her. It may be due to exhaustion," the doctor replied as he scanned his eyes across the two men.
But, his gaze suddenly paused on Halia. Why did this young man look so familiar?
Halia looked at the doctor in surprise and subconsciously touched her mustache nervously as she turned away; she recognized this man.
She had been so fl.u.s.tered in the hotel that she didn't think things through thoroughly. The closest hospital to the hotel was PUH (Peking University Hospital), and the emergency ward of this hospital was where she was working just a few months ago!
When she walked in through the doors of the hospital earlier, she realized what a mistake she had made. But, all she could do was hope that she didn't run into someone that she knew.
However, according to Murphy's Law, 'anything that can go wrong will go wrong'. Halia understood this well as she tried her best to avoid Dr. Isaac Yan's eyes.
He was the doctor assigned to Marissa...
Even though they hadn't seen each other since Halia worked at the hospital, they had spoken on the phone a few times and he had been hoping to catch up.
Isaac looked Halia up and down and sensed something suspicious. But, just as he was about to question the young man, a weak voice suddenly captured everyone's attention, "Where am I? What am I doing here?"
Marissa had woken up.
Morton walked over to the woman with furrowed brows and helped her sit up, "You fainted, Mrs. Qian."
Marissa touched her jaw with suspicion and looked at Halia, "Fainted?"
"Yes, the doctor said it was due to exhaustion."
At that moment, Danson Qian arrived. He was the only family member that was willing to pick up Marissa from the hospital. "Oh, Mother, what were you doing to get so exhausted? Didn't you go to the hotel with this pretty boy? Did things get too wild in there that you fainted?" he smirked.
"What are you talking about?" Marissa quickly rebutted.
"You've misunderstood Mr. Qian. Your stepmother was so distraught about losing your father, she fainted. Isn't that right, Mrs. Qian?" Halia said as she looked into the woman's eyes.
Marissa quickly got the hint. She could roughly remember what happened in the hotel room, but she couldn't tell everyone that Mars Wu knocked her out because she was practically trying to r.a.p.e him. How embarrassing would that be?
So, she quickly replied, "Yes, that's right. Lawyer Wu was going through the receipts with me and it broke my heart to think about the pressures your father had when he was alive. He was such a hardworking man."
Danson smirked. He knew this woman well. She was definitely lying because there were too many outsiders around, but he didn't expose her. "Well, are you OK now? Can we go home?" he asked.
Isaac quickly stepped forward and said, "Mrs. Qian is OK to go home, but I'll need you to sign her dispatch papers and pay the hospital bill."
Danson nodded his head and followed Isaac to the reception desk. As Isaac walked away, he took one last glance at Halia and his eyes opened wide like he realized something. But, he did not say anything.
After Danson and Isaac left, Morton walked over to Marissa's side and said apologetically, "I'm sorry if my new legal assistant triggered some bad memories and feelings. If you want to go over the doc.u.ments again, I can personally discuss them with you next time."
Marissa glanced at Halia and shook her head, "It's OK, we don't need to go over it again. Just process the inheritance as is. I want it over and done with as soon as possible."
Morton nodded and grabbed onto Halia's arm. "In that case, we will get going." He then dragged her out of the hospital.
Halia looked at her arm. Why did this man seem a little annoyed?
"Get in my car, I'll drive you home," Morton said as they walked out of the hospital towards his car.
"That's OK, I can get home myself," Halia replied as she tried to loosen herself from the man's grip.
But, Morton did not take no for an answer as he pushed the little legal assistant into his car.
After he started the engine and began to drive, he asked in seriousness, "Can you tell me what exactly happened today?"
Halia looked at the man nervously, "What do you mean?"
"Everyone knows how Mrs. Qian is like. There's no way she would have fainted because of her husband's death," Morton said as he stared ahead.
Halia lowered her head. After a moment of hesitation, she replied, "I...knocked her out..."
Morton stepped on the brakes and looked at Halia in surprise, "You knocked her out?! How? Do you know how serious it will be if she decides to sue you? You won't be able to afford the legal bills with your legal assistant salary! Do you want me to contact her and settle it in private?"
Halia shook her head and laughed, "She would never do that."
Besides, Halia had plenty of money to fight back.
"Why wouldn't she?" Morton asked with suspicion.
"If she reveals that I knocked her out, then I will tell everyone she tried to seduce me and r.a.p.e me! I had a voice recorder on," Halia replied as she shook her phone. She originally turned it on in case Marissa said something that could aid with her mission.
Morton stared straight ahead and bit his lip to hold back a smile.
He then started the car again.
Halia looked at the man with curiosity. Why did it look like he was amused?
"What's so funny?" she subconsciously pouted.
Morton looked at the little legal assistant and burst into laughter, "I can't believe she's attracted to you."
Halia looked down at herself and touched her mustache, "What's so bad about me? I think I'm pretty handsome."
Morton shook his head, "It's nothing. Nothing's wrong with you."
He continued to shake his head in disbelief.
Actually, from the moment that human resources first introduced Halia to Morton Meng, he already noticed she was a woman disguised as a man. He didn't understand why she was disguised, but since she passed through human resources, he didn't want to turn down a potentially good talent. So, he decided to monitor her and see how she progressed in the firm. To his surprise, she was very smart, and she was also great at making coffee.
But, why couldn't anyone else tell that she was a woman?
To him, it was extremely obvious...
