Chapter 254 - Overtime

Name:Help...My Wife is a Spy Author:Yunyi
Officer Huang waited until work was over and pretended to stay back.

"You guys leave first, I still have some reports to type," he said as he waved goodbye to his colleagues.

Officer Huang was a senior detective from the frauds department of the SPU. A well-respected senior with years of experience.

He was also the detective that had released Halia earlier that day, under the instructions of Captain Tang. But, he didn't trust the little legal assistant; something seemed off. So, he decided to do some investigating while no one else was around.

Soon, the office emptied out. No one suspected that Officer Huang was holding his own investigation since they had just arrested a lawyer that morning for years of embezzlement and fraud. It was a big case with many influential victims, so there were definitely a lot of reports to write; it made sense that he was staying back.

As soon as he saw the opportunity, Officer Huang logged into the SPU database and started snooping around for the name, Mars Wu. If this person was a snitch, was he involved in any other cases?

But, after searching the entire night, he found nothing. There was absolutely no information on this man. Nothing good, nothing bad...nothing. It was like this person didn't exist.

But, the more he couldn't find anything, the more he began to suspect that Mars Wu was the other identity he guessed. Mars Wu...was a spy...

He was sure of it.

He picked up his phone and dialed a number, "Keep your eye on Mars Wu, I think he's a spy..."

...

When Halia returned to Morton's office, he was in the middle of a phone call, so she quietly returned to where she was working before and sat back down. But, that was when she noticed a mug of hot lemon tea on the coffee table and a packet of painkillers.

Halia looked at them curiously.

"Are you OK?" a voice suddenly asked behind her.

Halia turned around in surprise. Morton had finished his phone call and was now standing behind her.

"You rushed out all of a sudden. Do you have a stomach ache?" Morton asked. "The lemon tea will help you replenish any lost electrolytes. If you are still in pain, take some painkillers."

Morton sat down next to Halia, picked up the mug of hot lemon tea, and placed it in Halia's hand.

Halia smiled awkwardly, "Thank you, but I'm fine."

Halia wrapped her fingers politely around the mug that Morton handed her, but her fingers accidentally brushed against Morton's.

She quickly tried to pull the mug away, but Morton grabbed onto her hand, holding it firmly in place.

"Why have you been lying to me?" he asked as he looked into her eyes.

Halia looked down awkwardly. She knew it. This man knew she was a woman. How was she going to explain herself?

"I didn't mean to..." Halia didn't know how to respond. This was real life, not a drama. It wasn't like she was going to war on behalf of her father, attending an all-boys high school to meet an idol, or joining a boy band on behalf of her twin brother. 1

"Have you been spying on me?" Morton asked all of a sudden.

Halia lifted her head cautiously. What did he mean? Did he discover what she was doing there?

"I..." Halia stuttered a little.

"I've seen the way you've looked at me and the way you've tried to get my attention," Morton said.

Halia took a deep breath. Of course, she was looking at him, he was a suspect. And, of course, she was trying to get his attention, she was trying to gain his trust and get access to confidential information. Otherwise, she wouldn't have caught Roy so easily. Had he noticed?

"I think you've misunderstood," Halia replied awkwardly.

"I know you're a woman," Morton suddenly said as he looked into Halia's eyes. "When did you start noticing me? Did you join this law firm to meet me? What's your motive?"

Halia quickly pulled the mug of lemon tea away and placed it down on the coffee table. She had to remain calm and think of something.

"It's not what you think," she replied.

Morton smirked. At that moment, he shuffled closer to Halia and wrapped an arm around her waist, "How do you know what I'm thinking?"

Halia shuffled back in surprise. It seemed, he really wasn't thinking what she thought he was thinking. She thought he had discovered that she was a spy, but that did not seem like the case.

"How long have you liked me? Did you join the law firm to meet me?" Morton asked.

Halia's eyes opened wide. Her? Like him? Where did this man get this idea?

"I..." but just as she was about to deny it, she suddenly thought of something: a perfect cover story.

"I noticed you back in university. We studied some of your previous cases and my dream was to work for you. But, I also heard about Roy and I was afraid of being harassed by him, so I decided to dress up as a man," Halia explained. "You're my idol. A senior in the field that I respect and look up to."

"Idol? Senior?" Morton said with slight disappointment.

Halia laughed innocently, "Yes, you're like an older brother to me. You've taught me so much and I'm so grateful. I hope you can forgive me for lying to you."

Morton frowned, "Older brother?"

"Yes, I don't have a brother. I've always dreamed of having a brother like you," she smiled.

Morton leaned forward with frustration and grabbed hold of Halia's chin. "I don't want to be your brother," he said domineeringly. All this time, he suspected she liked him so he had begun to develop feelings for her. How could she treat him like a brother?

"Brothers don't do this," he said seductively.

Halia gasped in surprise as the man moved closer and closer. Not this again! Only last night, he was doing something similar to her when she was Haili Feng.

Halia tried to shuffle away, but Morton trapped her between his body and the sofa and there was nowhere she could go. Any closer and she would have no choice but to knock him out.

But, just as Halia closed her eyes and clenched her fist, there was a knock on the door.

Halia and Morton immediately looked towards the door.

It was Morton's secretary.

"Ahem, Lawyer Meng, I've finished what you've asked me to do. May I go home?" the secretary asked awkwardly as she looked at the two men sprawled on top of the sofa. No wonder she had never seen Morton with a woman. Judging by the scene in front of her, it seemed as though Morton liked men!

Morton quickly sat upright and waved his hand, "Go."

The secretary blushed and quickly left.

Morton cleared his throat after the secretary left and said, "Roy's gone now. Come to work as a woman tomorrow. I don't want any weird rumors to spread about me."

Halia sat upright as well and nodded her head. Anyone get these references? Leave your comments. =p
