9am. Boracay, White Pearl Resort.
Natalie and Sean arrived right on time. Sean was a meticulous SPU senior agent and Natalie was the secretary/personal assistant of one of the most successful men in China, so they were both well-organized and always on time.
Halia ran over excitedly to hug her two friends and Jackson followed behind to shake their hands.
"The driver will be here at 11, so we can help you move everything to your room first," Halia said.
Jackson immediately stepped forward to help, not allowing the pregnant woman to carry a single bag.
Natalie smiled thankfully. Although she didn't know Jackson well, she could tell he was a great man and she was looking forward to learning more about him on this trip.
"How was your flight?" Halia asked as she hooked her arm with Natalie's.
Natalie grinned, "It was so smooth that I fell asleep through the whole thing. What about you? How was the first night of your honeymoon?"
As Natalie spoke, she gave a cheeky wink, obviously hinting other things.
But, Halia blushed a little and ignored her by answering seriously, "Jackson prepared a romantic dinner on the beach with a live dance performance. It was amazing."
Natalie chuckled, "Boring..."
The four friends soon stepped into the elevator and joined a man that was already inside. Halia glanced at the man as he shuffled to the side to make space. He looked familiar.
The resort only had four levels, so it didn't take long before the elevator stopped on the second floor and the man stepped out. Halia got a major sense of Deja Vu and realized why the man looked familiar. He was in the elevator when she and Jackson were returning to their room after dinner last night.
At that moment, she realized something else that she didn't before.
If they boarded the elevator on the ground floor...why was there already a person in the elevator???
Unless...
...there was another floor below them...
Halia watched as the man walked away. Who was he? Did he really come from the bas.e.m.e.nt level?
Halia looked around the elevator curiously. Was there a secret button somewhere? At that moment, her eyes paused on the card scanner on the wall. That was the only way to access the levels. Could that be the answer? Perhaps, she needed a special card to get to the bas.e.m.e.nt. But, what could be down there?
A moment later, the elevator stopped on the third floor and the two couples stepped out. They had specifically requested two rooms next to each other and were lucky that their request was met.
As Halia passed by her and Jackson's room, she noticed a cleaner enter their room to clean it for the day. All of a sudden, a thought came to her mind. Did the cleaner have access to the bas.e.m.e.nt level?
She quickly paused in front of her room and said, "You guys go ahead, I need to grab something from our room."
Her husband and two friends nodded their heads without any suspicion and continued to Sean and Natalie's room next door.
Halia immediately turned and entered her room. The cleaner was a little startled, but she bowed politely when she realized it was Halia, "Good morning, Ma'am, would you like me to vacate the room?"
As the woman had her head down, Halia noticed a bunch of silver tags attached to a keyring that was sitting in the woman's fresh laundry basket. Some of the tags were round and some of them were rectangular, and it looked like some numbers and letters were imprinted on them. Halia quickly figured out that the round tags were for floors and the rectangular tags were for rooms. G, 1, 2, 3 - there were 4 round tags in total. Halia frowned. What about B? She remembered that on the plan, the bas.e.m.e.nt level was named level B.
The cleaner noticed at that moment that Halia hadn't responded, so she slowly lifted her head to check if she had heard her. Perhaps...she didn't know English. The cleaner pointed to the bed and said, "I clean...OK?"
Halia quickly snapped out of her daze and said, "Oh sorry, I was thinking about something."
The cleaner smiled, "That's OK, Ma'am. Is it OK for me to continue cleaning?"
Halia nodded her head. "Yes, but I think I lost my key for level B. Have you seen it?" she tested.
The cleaner looked at Halia with confusion, "Do you mean level G? We don't have a level B..."
Halia could tell that the cleaner was genuinely confused and it confirmed that she had no idea about the secret level either. It made sense, though. If the level was such a secret, how could a mere cleaner know about it?
Halia dug her hands in her pocket and laughed, "Oh yes, level G, but silly me, here it is. It was in my pocket all along."
The cleaner laughed awkwardly. Sometimes, when people were on vacation, they seemed to leave their brains at home and make silly mistakes, so this did not surprise her too much.
Halia smiled at the cleaner and walked back out of the room, "Don't mind me. Continue with what you were doing..."
...
Back in Hong Kong, Emerson sat up in bed and looked around in confusion. The sun was up and it was already the next day. The last thing he remembered from the previous night, was watching Avaleigh take one bite after another of the food he had prepared and thinking how mesmerizing she looked. He must have fallen asleep while Avaleigh was eating. How embarrassing...
He glanced down at his clothes and realized someone had helped him change into a T-shirt and sweatpants. This was not the first time this had happened. All he could do was blame himself for working too hard and tiring himself out.
But, where was Avaleigh now? Did she leave? Or did she take the suggestion he made and stay the night? They had plenty of empty rooms in the mansion for a guest.
At that moment, one of his maids knocked on the door.
"Come in," Emerson said.
The young woman walked in and greeted politely, "Good morning, Young Master, did you sleep well?"
Emerson nodded his head and asked with hope, "Where's Miss Song? Is she still here?"
The maid smiled and shook her head, "Miss Song saw you fall asleep and she didn't want to disturb you so she borrowed some money and caught a taxi back to the hotel."
Emerson frowned. She didn't take his suggestion in the end. He was hoping to see her before work.
The maid saw Emerson frown and continued, "Miss Song told you to rest properly. She said she will make sure to eat all her meals today and she told you not to check on her in the morning or the afternoon. But..."
The maid paused for a bit, as though she was deliberately trying to create suspense. In reality, she was trying to remember the exact words that Avaleigh had said.
"But, what?" Emerson asked impatiently.
"But...she was hoping you could finish work on time today and let her treat you to a thank you dinner after work," the maid recalled.
A huge smile appeared on Emerson's face and he threw a punch in the air, "YES! She's inviting me to dinner!"
The maid smiled as well. It was rare to see their Young Master in such a good mood. Especially after everything that had happened to him lately.
