Chapter 478 Found!-2
" Phew! one left." Samuel sensed him through the smoke. He had already deployed more smoke guns along with a few incendiaries along the way he came through. Due to Motel's history, it didn't seem safe for people to stay in.
There was only one stair between the two floors, and it was advantageous for the people to barricade themselves inside. Still, Samuel's entry through the roof played a considerable role for Samuel to push through without worrying about his six.
He could feel the crowd growing inside; many law enforcement agencies gathered around the motel, and it was starting to make a mess. Fortunately, it was still early, and there were few back alleys that he could escape through, but he had to make fast moves.
Suddenly, the lone man started running. Samuel thought he would make a frontal attack, but instead, he ran toward Elise's room. Samuel's heart sank; he didn't know what he was planning, but he could be trying to get rid of her to spite Samuel.
Samuel ran at full speed, neglecting the fire and bodies littering the corridor. As a last resort, he was charging an elemental attack to deal with the threat directly, but the opposite happened when the man reached Elise.
Samuel saw him grabbing Elise and jumping out the window like a madman. They were on the fourth floor, and there was no way for the man to know if he would survive, but he still took the leap of faith.
Fortunately for him, a dumpster pit outside cushioned his fall; Samuel, too, took the jump and chased after him. He was suitable at his tail, but the man was brilliant and kept throwing different grenades from his backpack without looking behind.
His only thought was to get away; he already had a place in mind. The underground sewer ran miles under Paris, built in the seventeenth hundreds. The Catacombs of Paris were underground ossuaries in Paris which held the remains of more than six million people.
Built to consolidate Paris's ancient stone quarries, they extend south from the "Gate of Hell" former city gate; the ossuary was created to eliminate the city's overflowing cemeteries.
The man was experienced; he kept Elise body on his shoulder and knew the man in black wouldn't shoot him randomly. It was his one ticket out of this mess. With everything he had seen from the enemy, he knew his chances were slim, but he had to make an effort, or else the precaution would be immense.
" I got her. The enemy is too strong, all of my men are dead!"
" Yes, the girl seem to his target too. With how skill he is I think it's an intervention from another family."
He kept sending information to Huxley while running away. He was using a zig-zag pattern to escape, hoping to fend off Samuel's pursuit, but no matter how much he tried, Samuel would be right behind him.
The reason why Samuel didn't attack him outright was because they were running into public every now and then. With so many police running around in the city, if he fired unnecessarily, it would attract their attention, and he would have a more challenging time staying hidden.
People started to notice them, seeing a messy guy running while carrying a girl while another person in black was chasing him. It began to make a mess, but Samuel kept calm. Technology was still primitive; there were a handful of great camera phones, but with his speed, they would only capture a blur.
As he expected, a few people started taking pictures. They were a few hundred meters from the motel, and the public remained calm. Most of them thought they were filming a movie, which made them take out their phone to picture their excitement.
Why wouldn't they be? Samuel was carrying two pistols and a few gears on his back and masquerading like a villain while the captain in front of him had full body armour with his face covered with a balaclava.
His guns were hanging on his hip, and he was carrying a little girl who seemed asleep. Without even seeing his face, people could see terror in his eyes. The man saw a few patrolling policemen ahead, so he made a sharp turn inside a back alley. He was sure Samuel would not make a move, but he was wrong.
Samuel employed his elemental power to make him slip his footing first. When the man lost balance, he accidentally let go of Elise to protect his face, which gave Samuel a few milliseconds to take the shot. Samuel was running, but his accuracy was still perfect.
He saw Elise fall and sprinted like a panther, maximizing his power to teleport him beneath her failing body. The man's body didn't fall down before Samuel had Elise in his arms. Samuel grabbed the man's earpiece, which was still buzzing; he needed something to lead him to the behind-the-scenes mastermind.
Samuel dashed to the other side with the enemy down and directly leapt on top of the building. He turned back to see a few people entering the alley to find the man's corpse; it was a couple of police officers who were looking around. They were sure they saw more people entering the passage, but they seemingly vanished into thin air!
" Huff huff." Samuel sat down with Elise in his arms. The building was secure for the moment, and the floor that he was in was empty. He entered through the balcony and laid Elise on the sofa. He inspected Elise's body for injuries; there were minor cuts with no significant harm, which made him take a sigh of relief. n/-OVelb1n
Because of his stubbornness not to use his powers, Elise almost lost her life. He reflected for a moment before focusing his attention back on the earpiece. He could hear a faint mechanical voice coming out of it.
Wearing the piece, he heard several loud shouts barely distinguishable in gender. It looked like the other party was careful about their identity. He tapped the button that looked like the transmitter.
" Fuck! Answer me you little shit! Do you know what would happen if you fail this mission?"
" Didn't he say he was heading for the Catacombs? Maybe he have a weak signal?"
It looked like two people conversing, but the line was still connected. Samuel tried to distinguish their voices, but they were using a voice scrambler, making them sound the same. Samuel heard their conversation for a few minutes before proclaiming about his presence.
" Greetings, you don't have to wait for him. He is dead." He said in an altered voice.
Merikh and Huxley, dreading mission failure, immediately shot up from their chair, hearing the unfamiliar voice.
" Who are you?"
" That doesn't matter, I only want to convey my master's wish. We already know about your identity and this was only a test which made my master feel a lot disappointed. We were trying to gauze your strength by I alone was enough to decimate your entire army which meant we can proceed with our plan."
""???"" Huxley and Merikh were baffled hearing his testimony. Master? Strength? Who was this unknown enemy? Merikh initially anticipated that it was one of Samuel's soldiers, but he got a report that they were on the other side of the city and nowhere near their main base.
It was also odd to think of the Rothschild family making a brazen move for a little girl. It was terrible that they were currently in a proxy war with them, but their capabilities were nowhere near enough to pull something off like this.
" Just know you 'family' is next." Samuel cut off the connection and destroyed the device. Huxley and Merikh didn't even get to say anything before they lost connection. On the other hand, Samuel contacted Jane and told her about his location.
" I am already on it. Also I got their location boss, good work keeping them busy." She praised him, but he was puzzled hearing her.
" How?"
" Eh? It was Adrian. We heard you talking and while triangulating your position picked up the other signal and piggyback off of it. Thanks to your superb conversational skills, they were too shocked to notice us in their system!"
Samuel wanted to protest, but it was good; he only bombarded them with bogus information so they would think twice, fearing retaliation from an unknown enemy. However, it would be a perfect conclusion if he could cut off the head directly.
With Jane's direction, Ze drove the car to the nearest location to Samuel. He sneaked back while carrying Elise and met up with them right outside the police's barricades. Steve and Arthur had also halted their mission, knowing Elise was safe.
It was getting too obvious that an all-out war was going on behind the scenes in the old city of Paris. If caught, it would become a national incident, so they had to abandon their mission. Steve was a little regretful; he thought he could get more information if he rummaged through their equipment, but there was no chance they could escape with such gear in their hands.
Everyone left in their respective cars and gathered back outside the Orphanage. It was already pitch dark by the time they reached it, but they saw several people waiting for them in the courtyard. Samuel also noticed the girls who were looking at him with hopeful looks. He got out of the car carrying Elise in his arms.
One person who had a dark expression was Kayla who was looking at him like she was about to kill someone!
