Chapter 54.1 – Waltz and Communication Tower

Shi Yuan was having dinner with Edward’s family.

There were only three chairs, so Edward brought a cube robot, kicked away a pile of clutter under his feet, and put the robot next to the table.

“Sit on Edward’s robot!” he said.

The robot was too short, only as high as a human’s knee. Shi Yuan sat on it, exposing only his face on the table, and it would be a struggle to pick food.

There was a mountain of cans piled up in the corner of the room, which Edward collected from who knows where. He rummaged in the pile for a long time, picking and choosing, and found 4 cans of corn. He hummed while using a can opener and put one of the cans in front of Shi Yuan: “Edward invites you to eat corn!”

“Thank you,” Shi Yuan said.

Edward put two more cans in front of Joanna and Mike.

Shi Yuan asked, “Have you been giving them something to eat?”

Edward: “Of course, they are family!”

Shi Yuan said: “It’s better not to give them too much, food is very precious. And I don’t think they… have a good appetite.”

“They are family, family should eat together!”

“Okay.”

Then, Shi Yuan watched Edward finish eating the canned food, waved his hand, took the canned food of the cardboard people, poured it into his mouth, and ate it all.

Shi Yuan said, “Didn’t you give them this?”

Edward said: “Family must share food!” He burped.

Shi Yuan also saw two old photos.

The first photo showed the young Edward being awarded the medal, with General Su Enqi shaking hands with him. A line next to it read [208, Abyss Watcher Commendation Ceremony, Edward Walker awarded the rank of Sergeant]

The second photo was a family portrait. Edward, wearing a military uniform, was holding his wife and child. Behind him was a passing blue bus and the high walls of Iron City.

The photo was crumpled in the photo frame, mixed with grease, not knowing how many times it had been folded.

Shi Yuan asked, “You used to be a Watcher?”

Edward: “Yes, Edward has stared into Abyss No. 3! Number 3!” He gestured with his hands and feet. “It represents ‘White Bones’! ‘White Bones’!”

Now, Shi Yuan understood why Edward could live in Iron City.

Monsters like to follow humans and were not interested in dead things. Large-scale cities were more likely to attract them than individuals.

This was the reason why Watchers could live by the abyss for a long time.

Watchers live in watchtowers, often in teams of less than 10 people, equipped with weapons and necessities of life, as well as aircraft for evacuation. They acted low-key and minimized their sense of existence, so the monster tide always ignored them and ran straight to the city.

Shi Yuan had just returned from the theater, wearing a cypress pullover, and asked him, “If it’s safer to be separated, why do we still live in the city?”
