148 Half the Truth
Shen Yin decisively called Wu Zheng, who had stayed in the police station. “Captain, you can arrest him now. Wang Gang is suspected of a major crime. You must focus on searching Wang Gang’s car. I’ll get Zou Sheng to send you the information we found.”
After hanging up, Shen Yin heaved a long sigh of relief and leaned back in her seat, closing her eyes to rest them.
After watching the surveillance footage for so long, her eyes were bloodshot and so sore that they felt as though they were about to pop out. If she did not close her eyes and rest them, she would probably go blind.
Zou Sheng leaned against the car seat and also closed his eyes to rest. However, he said with slight bewilderment, “Even if Wang Gang had not given up on his evil intentions, he did not have kill her so cruelly, right? Why dig out her internal organs and mutilate her corpse like that? Did he have to do that?”
Shen Yin opened her eyes lazily and said indifferently, “That is the key to the case. Don’t forget that we have another suspect.”
“Hu Jin?” Zou Sheng gaped in shock. “You suspect that the two of them are accomplices? But Tan Li is carrying his child!”
Shen Yin suddenly thought of something, and the corners of her mouth curled up into a faint, bitter smile. “Not necessarily. Sometimes, the closer you are to someone, the easier it is for them to hurt you, because they will make use of your unconditional trust. You can only be betrayed by someone close to you.”
Zou Sheng could not help but sigh. “The human heart is unpredictable.” Then, he smacked his lips and asked, “What should we do now? How should we start investigating Hu Jin?”
Shen Yin pondered for a moment and decided. “Investigate the relationship between Hu Jin and Wang Gang. I don’t believe that these two can hide their relationship so flawlessly.”
The car drove back to the police station. It was almost time to knock off. Wu Zheng and Meng Heng were in the interrogation room asking Wang Gang what he was doing near Tan Li’s old building that night.
On the surveillance cameras, Wang Gang looked self-assured. He smiled casually and said, “She’s a teacher in our school. I thought that since she was about to give birth, so I would visit and ask about her welfare and see if there was anything I could help with.”
Wu Zheng rapped on the table and reminded him to answer the police officer’s question seriously. “You went to a married and pregnant female teacher’s house at 10 pm to ask about her pregnancy? Is that credible?”
Wang Gang smiled gently. He had already thought of an excuse. “No, Officer, I’m very busy. I had just finished a meeting with someone that day and decided to make the time to visit her. Besides, I didn’t stay for long. Didn’t you check the surveillance cameras?”
Wu Zheng could not be bothered to quibble with him. He leaned back in his chair and looked at him coldly. “Who were you with? What time did your meeting start and end? Where were you? Tell me the truth.”
Wang Gang pondered for a while and said seriously, “It was probably Principal Zhang from the school next door…”
Looking at Wu Zheng’s increasingly impatient gaze, Wang Gang smacked the table and said confidently, “Yes, it was Principal Zhang. We just had a simple meal near his house.”
“Which Principal Zhang? And what was the name of the restaurant. Tell us everything.” Meng Heng took a pen and wrote down his statement. He turned around and left the surveillance room to verify Wang Gang’s statement.
Shen Yin had been waiting for Meng Heng outside the surveillance room. When she saw him emerge, she hurried forward and asked anxiously, “Where’s the car? Did you check it carefully?”
Meng Heng shook his head. “We’ve checked everything. There’s not a single strand of hair. Either he really didn’t take Tan Li away, or he’s already cleaned the car thoroughly.”
Shen Yin frowned and nodded.
Wu Zheng soon emerged. When he saw Shen Yin, he smiled and said, “You’ve worked hard, Dr. Shen. It’s almost time to knock off. Go home and rest first. We’ll continue with the rest of the investigation.”
Actually, half of the truth had already surfaced. All that was left was to gather evidence.
Although Wang Gang had cleaned the car, the surveillance cameras would certainly have captured him along the way. As long as they continued investigating, they would definitely be able to find out where the car had gone after leaving Tan Li’s house.
Shen Yin quickly sorted out her thoughts and instructed worriedly, “Wang Gang might have colluded with Hu Jin to murder his wife and child. Zou Sheng and I also found a suspicious bank account today. We must include Hu Jin as a key suspect.”
“We understand.” Wu Zheng nodded. It was all thanks to Shen Yin’s help that the case had progressed so quickly. It seemed that Shen Yin had not just by relied on dusty theoretical knowledge to become the chief forensic pathologist at such a young age. She was a capable and qualified police officer.
After leaving the police station, Shen Yin first went to the prosecutor’s office to look for Li Zi only to discover that she had to work overtime tonight. So she returned to Li Zi’s house and sent Cheng Huo’s jacket and gown to the dry cleaner.
After doing that, she packed some essentials and took a taxi back to the Lian residence.
Old Master Lian was old and had many minor ailments. If he could not rest properly because he was worried about her, it would be her fault.
Shen Yin sighed and pushed open the door. She saw Lian Jing, who had returned early, sitting on the sofa and reading with Shen Nian.
