240 The Lost Girl
Wu Zheng followed Meng Heng’s directions and drove all the way to a cemetery in Chengxi.
In order to avoid traffic accidents, the two cars only surrounded Dong Chang when they reached the secluded cemetery.
The car door opened and closed. The police officers got out of the car with their pistols raised. Wu Zheng walked in front and pointed his gun at Dong Chang. He said sternly, “Get out!”
Dong Chang sat in the car and looked at Wu Zheng coldly through the window for a moment. Then, he sneered and got out of the car with his hands raised as ordered.
“Captain Wu, did I break any traffic rules? Or is it against the law to come to the cemetery to visit to the graves now?” Dong Chang glanced innocently at the surrounding police officers, his eyes still faintly amused.
Wu Zheng gestured for Meng Heng to handcuff him. “You’re suspected of poisoning someone. Please follow us back to assist in the investigation.”
“Wait!” Dong Chang raised his eyes and stared fixedly at Wu Zheng. His expression suddenly became a little melancholic. “Can you let me finish my business first before going back with you?”
Wu Zheng saw that he was already handcuffed, so he put down the pistol and asked expressionlessly, “What is it?”
“I’m going to see a… friend.” He smiled bitterly, as if the last two words had turned into a sharp dagger, stabbing his heart.
Wu Zheng looked at the cemetery beside him and narrowed his eyes slightly. After thinking for a moment, he agreed to his request.
A team of police officers followed Dong Chang to a remote corner of the cemetery. The cute girl in the picture on the tombstone was smiling brightly. Time had stopped for her in her teenage years.
She looked very much like Shen Yin.
“Zhao Wan?” Meng Heng frowned and took out his phone. He took a photo of the tombstone and sent it to Zou Sheng for him to investigate.
Dong Chang noticed his actions and sneered. He mocked, “You police are so troublesome. I’m right here. If you want to know anything, just ask me.”
Wu Zheng did not want to treat him hostilely in front of this girl’s tombstone. He softened his tone and said, “If we ask you, will you answer truthfully?”
Dong Chang squatted down and looked at the girl’s face warmly. He raised his hand and gently touched her tombstone. He smiled and said, “That depends on what you’re asking.”
From his pocket, he took out a diamond ring and the metal ring tab from a can and slowly placed them in front of the girl’s tombstone. His voice was so soft as if he was afraid of scaring her. “Wan Wan, I’m sorry. I’m only giving you this ring now.”
He really seemed to be talking to the girl. Wu Zheng and Meng Heng looked at each other. Then they flanked him and grabbed him to bring him back to the police car.
In Team Three’s office, Shen Yin and Zou Sheng immediately understood what was going on when they saw the photo. Zou Sheng hurriedly used the computer to pull up information on the dead girl.
The girl’s name was Zhao Wan. She was Dong Chang’s classmate from elementary school to junior high school. Unfortunately, on a Tuesday in the first semester of the second year of junior high school, the girl suddenly committed suicide at home. From then on, Dong Chang’s personality changed drastically. His mother moved him to another school so he could have a fresh start.
Zou Sheng looked at the year on the school register and slapped his thigh in frustration. “How could I be so careless! How could I have overlooked such an important detail!”
“What do you mean?” Shen Yin fixed her eyes on the screen. When they connected the timing of the main events, everything fell into place.
After the girl committed suicide, Dong Chang’s father was arrested and imprisoned for prostitution. Right on the heels of that, Dong Chang left school because he was bullied.
Everything seemed to be unrelated, but in fact, every event was linked to the next.
Shen Yin was almost certain that the girl’s suicide was related to Dong Chang’s father, Dong Heng.
Her frown deepened. She looked at the time and estimated that Wu Zheng and the others should be on their way back. She patted Zou Sheng’s shoulder and begged, “Check Zhao Wan’s parents’ address first. We have to verify it with them personally.”
“No problem.” Zou Sheng snapped his fingers and quickly found the current address of the two old folks.
Ever since their daughter’s death, they had sold their old house and moved to an old neighborhood in the city. Zou Sheng contacted them and asked them to come to the police station as soon as possible to cooperate with the investigation.
Coincidentally, Wu Zheng and Meng Heng’s car drove into the courtyard just as Zhao Wan’s parents entered the police station.
Dong Chang saw the backs of the two people from afar and felt that they seemed very familiar. His usually calm eyes instantly widened as he took two steps forward in disbelief. However, he thought of something and hesitated.
Shen Yin and Zou Sheng brought Zhao Wan’s parents into the lounge and poured them each a cup of hot water. Then, they smiled comfortingly and said, “Don’t be nervous. We asked you to come down to the station because we wanted to know about something that happened in the past.”
“What’s the matter?” Hearing Shen Yin’s words, Mother Zhao nervously clenched the knitted bag in her hand. Her eyes were filled with hesitation, as if she had thought of something very bad.
