Chapter 204: Catching the Rat

However, there was no way that Rihannan would stop crying just from those words. As Basil kept watching Rihannan still cry tearfully, he rummaged in his pockets and pulled something out.

“I heard that when you are in a bad mood, you feel better if you eat something sweet. My majesty, have this at least…”

The thing on his hand was a candy. On top of the candy was a neat decoration of a pink ribbon. As Rihannan stared at the candy in surprise and confusion with tears still in her eyes, Basil awkwardly started to pull back his embarrassed hand.

‘She used to take it happily when she was young, I guess it was too much to ask for this time.’

“I apologize, I shouldn’t have…”

“Why are you nice to me, Basil?”

Hearing her sudden question, Basil’s eyes widened.

“Wha?”

“You’ve always been like this. In the past, and even now. Even though I treated you terribly last time, you still treat me nicely like this.”

Hearing her speak with wobbly and tearful voice, Basil felt as if he was listening to his own young daughter and had to stop himself from burst out laughing unconciously.

“Well, who could ever hate such a beautiful and fair queen like you?”

“No. Basil, you don’t know this, but there are many people that hate me as well. Even my family hated me endlessly.”

Basil smiled broadly.

“If there was someone that hated or disliked you, my queen, then it’s the person that has a problem. That’s for sure. On top of that, what you said last time wasn’t serious after all.”

This time, Basil pulled out a hankerchief to wipe Rihannan’s cheek. It was a soft motion of hand like a father trying to calm down their daughter.

“Any person with the right mind would always end up liking you, my queen. Even Madam Sessly isn’t someone that easily befriends anyone, yet is exclusively very weak towards you. Didn’t you know that?”

“Isn’t that because Madam Sessly is a good person?”

“Since you are a good person, my queen, that’s why Madam Sessly is treating you as one as well. Madam Sessly is actually very cold and harsh towards others usually. Even that fearsome queen mother was scared of Madam Sessly.”

Only as he finished wiping away all wet patches of Rihannan’s face Basil pulled away the hankerchief. Basil once again stretched out his hand with a candy towards her with a smile still on his face.

“If it’s okay with you, please try one. This is actually from my wife who wants me to make sure I eat properly, so it’s not something I just willingly give to anyone.”

Rihannan hesitated for a moment before taking the candy. She then replied with a small voice.

“… Thank you.”

Basil understood that those words she said had much more meanings than just one, and smiled happily.

“Please have a great rest after having it. Though problems may not be solved by it, I’m sure your mood will improve somewhat after having some sleep.”

Rihannan nodded her head. After confirming that her lips were making a faint smile on the ends, Basil was finally able to let out a relieved sigh.

As Rihannan stepped inside, Basil’s eyes quickly cooled down to ice, which were warm just a moment ago. He had been feeling a set of eyes watching him this whole time since he had left the home office that had been following persistently. And as soon as the queen went out of his view, the feeling of someone gazing him disappearaed at the same time.

According to his research, one of the servants that worked in the palace steadily gathered information related to the king and queen, handing the information over to someone outside of the palace every three days. He was just shocked that he didn’t realize that this was happening this whole time.

“Looks like he will finally start moving tonight.”

Basil coldly mumbled to himself. It was time for him to finally catch that rat that had been hiding itself in the palace this whole time.
