Chapter 12
The moment Chen Hansheng sat down earlier, he ‘accidentally’ put his arm around Xiao Rongyu’s shoulder and the latter immediately stiffened.
But since the university guys were around, she didn’t dare make a scene so she remained still and silent.
Now that the boys had dispersed, Xiao Rongyu finally told Chen Hansheng to remove his hand – he was being too intimate.
“Hmm, I wonder why I can’t control this hand of mine?” Chen Hansheng smiled, but even a fool could tell that he did that on purpose.
Xiao Rongyu sighed. Ever since she rejected Chen Hansheng’s confession, this person had been taking advantage of her.
Logically, she should be angry, but they were both classmates, friends, and now fellow countrymen in a new environment.
‘At least he liked me for three years. Let’s just forget about it.’
Xiao Rongyu missed the gentlemanly Chen Hansheng as she looked at the currently frivolous one.
Chen Hansheng, on the other hand, had his mind on something else. He looked out the window at the familiar yet unfamiliar city.
‘How many years has it been? Never thought that I’d return. How has everyone been?’
…
The journey from the station to the university town took about an hour. Many of the prospective university students had never taken such a long bus ride before as they started to get motion sickness along the way.
Xiao Rongyu didn’t look too good as she got off the bus. Chen Hansheng could not believe the bus journey hadn’t changed one bit.
Donghai University and the School of Finance and Economics were only 30 meters away from each other, so they were basically neighbors.
‘I don’t know how to tell her that I will take good care of her and make her happy…”
Xiao Rongyu’s phone suddenly rang and Chen Hansheng heard her ringtone – ‘Find It Hard to Tell You’ by Jay Chou. He sighed sentimentally. Such music truly made him nostalgic for the first decade of the 2000s. Those were the birth years of the legendary classics of Chinese music, the kind one could never get sick off or forget.
Unfortunately, Chen Hansheng was tone-deaf and could not sing along.
The phone call was from Gao Jialiang. It seemed that Romeo had not forgotten his Juliet.
Xiao Rongyu politely said a few sentences, hoping to hang up already. But Gao Jialiang kept repeating ‘Take good care of yourself, I’ll come to meet up with you after I’ve made the necessary arrangements. Be careful not to get tanned’.
Chen Hansheng was starting to get annoyed. He snatched the phone from Xiao Rongyu and shouted into the speaker. “You’re so annoying! Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of Xiao Rongyu.”
He hung up immediately after. Though Xiao Rongyu had also been getting annoyed by Gao Jialang, she did not like that Chen Hansheng took matters into his hands.
“What’s your problem?” Xiao Rongyu still hoped to reason with Chen Hansheng.
Chen Hansheng glanced at the bag on the ground. “Are you coming or not? Otherwise, I’m heading to my university.”
Xiao Rongyu had so much luggage that a girl like her would not be able to handle all by herself. She gave in in the end.
“Hansheng, let’s make up.” Chen Hansheng was stunned for a moment. “What do you mean?”
“I just want us to get along like we used to,” said Xiao Rongyu.
Chen Hansheng chuckled to himself. When he was madly in love with her, she rejected him. And now that he was no longer interested in her, she wanted to go back to how it was?
“Sure, I accept you as my girlfriend.”
“Hansheng, I don’t want to do that before I graduate from university.”
Xiao Rongyu gave the same rejection again. Chen Hansheng immediately interrupted, “Let’s save this conversation for later. I’ll help you get your bags to your dorm then head over to my university.”
Chen Hansheng carried all the big and small bags on his back and walked into Donghai University. He was acting so distant that Xiao Rongyu wanted to cry.
Chen Hansheng was very familiar with Donghai University. He helped Xiao Rongyu complete the admission procedures along the way and the latter simply followed behind him silently. They finally stopped at the female dormitory building.
“I’ll help you carry your luggage up and fulfill my promise to your dad. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t be able to stand the nagging from your dad and mine.”
Xiao Rongyu wanted to say something but when she saw how heartless and distant Chen Hansheng was, she simply pouted.
“You’re still acting like a child.” Chen Hansheng teased her.
Since it was registration day, the dorms had not enforced the rule of no-males in female dorms and vice versa yet. So, Chen Hansheng was allowed to enter and help Xiao Rongyu as promised.
Chen Hansheng noticed how slowly Xiao Rongyu was walking.
“Xiao Rongyu, what are you doing?” Chen Hansheng shouted.
Xiao Rongyu turned around angrily and was prepared to make Chen Hansheng apologize no matter what he said next.
“You’re heading towards the restroom. The dormitory is this way, stupid.” Chen Hansheng looked at her disdainfully.
“Oh, right. Sorry.” Xiao Rongyu wanted to cry as she turned back. She was too embarrassed to ask him for an apology.
They eventually arrived at her room, unit 303. She pushed the door open and noticed that quite a few girls had already moved in. Her roommates were quite friendly as they helped to carry her luggage in and introduced themselves to her.
“Are you Rongyu’s boyfriend?” asked a girl with small canine teeth to Chen Hansheng.
They were curious because Rongyu was the only one who had arrived with a boy while others had their parents.
If they weren’t in a romantic relationship, what else could they be?
Xiao Rongyu was about to deny and explain that she had no intentions to have a boyfriend until she graduated.
But Chen Hansheng beat her to it with an even simpler and detached response. “Don’t misunderstand. Xiao Rongyu and I were high school classmates. Her father had asked me for a favor at the last minute, that’s all.”
The seriousness in his tone made Xiao Rongyu a little sad. She lowered her head and pretended to unpack her bag as she continued to listen to Chen Hansheng converse with her roommates.
“Then which university are you attending?” asked the girl with small canine teeth.
“I’m from the School of Finance and Economics across the street.” Chen Hansheng answered.
When the other girls heard that, they became less interested in him. The School of Finance and Economics was much worse in standing than Donghai University. It seemed that the girls’ mindsets were still fixated on scores.
But the girl with small canine teeth did not mind at all. She smiled and said, “My name is Xu Zhixi and I’m from Jianye. What are your names?”
“My name is Chen Yingjun.”
Chen Hansheng did not bat an eyelid as he lied about his name.
“Nonsense. Who would have this name?”
Zhixi didn’t believe him and turned to ask Xiao Rongyu. “Rongyu, what’s his name?”
“Him? Chen Hansheng.” Xiao Rongyu rolled her eyes as she told the truth.
“What a liar.” Xu Zhixi was only 1.63 meters tall with fair skin like freshly peeled water chestnuts. When she spoke, her face would flush pink and her lips would reveal a set of cute canine teeth.
“But it is my name.” Chen Hansheng explained seriously. “Hansheng sounds similar to the English word, ‘handsome’. And ‘handsome’ means Yingjun in Mandarin. So I don’t think it’s wrong to call me Chen Yingjun.”
This time, not only Xu Zhixi laughed, but the other roommates also laughed. But this only made Xiao Rongyu sadder. Chen Hansheng used to make only her laugh.
“Chen Yingjun, you’re good with your words. Tell me honestly, have you had a lot of girlfriends?” asked Xu Zhixi with a smile.
Chen Hansheng shook his head. “There are very few women who could move my heart, especially now that we’re at this age.”
He glanced at the entire female dormitory and continued, “You guys are the 104th, 105th, 106th, 107th, and 108th.”
“You really know how to tease people.”
The girls in the dormitory laughed again. Everyone was very happy to be praised.
Xiao Rongyu silently counted the number of girls in the room. Chen Hansheng only listed five numbers and had deliberately left her out.
Seeing how he was flirting with her roommates, Xiao Rongyu started to feel as if she was being cheated on. She could not take it anymore. She took a deep breath and walked over, trying her best to calmly say, “Thank you for helping me carry my luggage. You can hurry on back to your university now.”
Chen Hansheng nodded. He was about to leave, but Xu Zhixi suddenly took a piece of paper and handed it to him. “This is our dormitory’s phone number. Call us anytime, handsome.”
“There’s no need.”
Xiao Rongyu flatly rejected Xu Zhixi. “Chen Hansheng can call me. He knows my phone number.”
Things started to get heated. It seemed that anyone who got into Donghai University was a proud person.
Xu Zhixi rolled her eyes, walked around Rongyu, and stuffed the paper into Chen Hansheng’s hand, before skipping away.
Xiao Rongyu looked at Chen Hansheng with slightly red eyes.
Chen Hansheng was quite amused. It seemed that something was brewing in Room 303.
