Chapter 19

The freshman assembly was boring as usual. A few university heads went up on stage to give speeches as the freshmen sweat under the sun.

“It’s so damn hot.” Chen Hansheng muttered.

“Hansheng, what are you complaining about? Why didn’t you say it was hot when you were chatting with the girls earlier?” Yang Shichao seemed bitter.

“That’s right.” Jin Yangming also chimed in. “Hansheng will treat everyone to a glass of sprite for lunch.”

This kid was the most dejected. The girls had been so engrossed chatting with Chen Hansheng, but no one paid attention to his cell phone. He really wanted to show it off, but no one even bothered to look at it.

Finally, the assembly ended and it was time for classes. Professor Guo led his students to the classroom.

The boys started winking at each other because they realized that some of the girls in their class were very good-looking

The girls knew that the boys were checking them out but they pretended not to have noticed. Nevertheless, the slight smile on the corner of their lips and the proud expression on their faces betrayed their inner thoughts.

Shen Youchu was the exception here. She lowered her head and followed behind the girls. It seemed like she really wanted to blend in, but at the same time, she was isolating herself.

When they got to class and took their seat, Chen Hansheng noticed Jin Yangming was missing. “Where’s our youngest?”

“He went to the toilet with his phone.” Dai Zhenyou didn’t sound pleased.

Everyone overestimated Jin Yangming’s ability to be mature. Just as Guo Zhongyun was about to start the first class meeting, Jin Yangming appeared at the door with his phone at his ear as he loudly said, “Hello? Hello? I can’t hear you. Can you speak louder? Forget it, let’s talk after class.”

His actions intentionally caught everyone’s attention. Jin Yangming hung up the phone and apologized to Guo Zhongyun innocently, “Sorry about that, Professor. I had to leave to take the call.”

Guo Zhongyun had his share of experiences dealing with a variety of university students. So he simply nodded and gestured for Jin Yangming to enter the classroom first.

Jin Yangming sat in his seat and complained to Dai Zhenyou angrily, “The signal must be terrible. This phone costs more than seven thousand yuan but it can’t even take a single call.”

Dai Zhenyou was a good friend and supported Jin Yangming.

Chen Hansheng slightly admired Jin Yangming and Dai Zhenyou’s dedication to keep up their act.

Thanks to Jin Yangming, the atmosphere in the class became lively. Guo Zhongyun let out a slight cough to get their attention and began to brief his students about their responsibilities. For example, military training, computer classes, and so on.

Guo Zhongyun never repeated himself. He made his points clear and direct and moved on to the next topic.

This was university after all, where professors only said what needed to be said and waited for no one, unlike high school teachers who were responsible for ensuring that their students fully understood their teachings.

After that, it was time for the students to introduce themselves. This was what everyone had been looking forward to.

“Hello, everyone. My name is Zhang Xiaoxian. I’m from Pengcheng City, Sudong Province.”

Starting from the leftmost seat, everyone took turns to go up to the stage to introduce themselves. The format was similar: “Hello, everyone. I’m XXX, from XXX.”

Some of the girls were confident enough to take off their military training hats to reveal their beautiful faces. If the girls did this, the boys would smile and push each other’s shoulders excitedly.

But none of them piqued Chen Hansheng’s interest as he remained laid back in his seat. It was only when Shen Youchu stepped onto the stage that Chen Hansheng sat up straight and leaned forward slightly, staring at her with bright eyes.

Shen Youchu was different from the other girls. Her face remained hidden under the military training hat and she did not dare to look straight ahead. She spoke with a voice as soft as a mosquito’s. “H-Hi, everyone. My name is Shen Youchu. I’m from Sichuan. Thank you.”

Shen Youchu stuttered despite speaking such a simple sentence. When she was done, her head dipped lower as she descended the stage.

“Since I can’t see her face, I’ll give her a 2.15 just because I pity her.”

Guo Shaoqiang acted like a judge as he scored every person who went up on stage. Currently, Shang Yanyan was the most beautiful girl, according to Guo Shaoqiang’s score of 8.85.

Jin Yangming pondered for a while, then shook his head and said, “I think she’s worth more than that. She’s quite tall and although I can’t see her face clearly, her hair is quite smooth. I think she’s worth at least four points.”

Chen Hansheng was a little surprised by Jin Yangming’s evaluation. He’s a Jianye native, a city boy. So, his aesthetic standards should be higher than Guo Shaoqiang’s.

Shen Youchu was also a little weird. She remained poor and single throughout her four years in university, despite being a natural beauty.

After the introductions, the next step was to decide on the class president. Previously, Hu Linyu was on track to take up the role. But now that Chen Hansheng had appeared as her rival, Guo Zhongyun became hesitant.

Based on what he had observed, Chen Hansheng’s abilities to speak and manage people were better than Hu Linyu’s.

However, Hu Linyu also had her advantages. She was enthusiastic and proactive, attributes needed to be a university class president.

Guo Zhongyun looked between Chen Hansheng and Hu Linyu again.

Hu Linyu looked back at Guo Zhongyun with eyes wide with anticipation.

Chen Hansheng, on the other hand, did not care at all and continued fooling around with his roommates.

Guo Zhongyun weighed the pros and cons in his head and finally said, “We are supposed to elect a class president today, but since we are still unfamiliar with each other, we’ll postpone it to next week.”

With that, Professor Guo left and the classroom immediately became chaotic.

Yang Shichao’s voice was the loudest. “Hansheng, you have to compete for class president so that you can cover for us in the future.”

Even Jin Yangming agreed with him.

Yang Shichao and Jin Yangming did not fully understand why Chen Hansheng was chosen but they were fine with it as long as they weren’t chosen. Moreover, they couldn’t think of any better candidates than their roommate.

After all, Chen Hansheng was already their room leader. Wouldn’t it be a natural progression for a room leader to become the class president?

The rest of the boys remembered that Chen Hansheng had organized the supper and treated everyone last night. The verbal support from Yang Shichao and Jin Yangming further convinced them to support Chen Hansheng.

Plus, they all lived in the same dorm. So they could easily communicate with Chen Hansheng about anything.

Hu Linyu never expected that her competitor would be Chen Hansheng. She previously had a good impression of him.

“Seems like one can’t judge a book by its cover.”

Hu Linyu let out a long sigh. She already had things planned out. She would take on the role of class president as a stepping stone to get accepted into the school transfer program. With that, she would be able to transition to the working world with a bit more ease. Therefore, being the class president was very important for her.

After thinking for a long time, Hu Linyu stood up to go back to her room. Since there was a rival, she could only prepare herself to accept the challenge.

She turned around and saw that only Shen Youchu was still there. This roommate seemed lonely and would usually be the last to leave.

“Youchu, here’s a piece of advice. Boys who are smooth talkers are all liars. You must remember that.”

“Oh…”

Shen Youchu raised her head and was stunned for a moment before softly replying.

Unfortunately, no one could see that under the military training hat was a charming face that was not inferior to Xiao Rongyu at all.
