Chapter 30

The middle-aged manager was astonished for a moment by Hansheng’s bold question. He put down his pen and looked at Chen Hansheng seriously. “You want to steal someone’s position?”

These words were nice to say but not nice to hear. Chen Hansheng smiled and ignored him. He picked up a stack of newspapers and fanned the dust on the stool, then sat down carefreely.

“I just want to make money. What’s there to steal?”

When the middle-aged man heard this, he nodded in agreement. “Student, you’re a little strange. You’re still a freshman, right?”

Chen Hansheng did not see the need to hide anything as he admitted generously.

“And judging from your clothes, your family isn’t in a bad financial position either. So why do you need to take a part-time job?”

This middle-aged man might not have much education, but he had been dealing with people for a long time. His eyes were sharp, and he was able to form a rough idea of Chen Hansheng at a glance.

“It’s just a part-time job. Why make things so complicated? This isn’t a national defense company. Do you want to investigate the three generations of my family too?”

Chen Hansheng was not afraid to speak for himself as he took out a cigarette and threw it over.

The middle-aged man took the cigarette, looked at the brand, and lit it up. “That’s why I said you’re a little strange. You’re young but you’re already such an eloquent speaker. But you have to understand. I can’t simply swap agents just because you asked for it. In fact, several students from your school have already looked for me.”

But Chen Hansheng stood his ground.

The manager continued, “I’ve picked the most suitable agent from among the students from your school and the business is doing well now. There are an average of sixty parcels every day. It’s not bad for a university campus.”

“So you have no intention of changing agents?”

Chen Hansheng raised his eyebrows at the manager.

“Not really. But if you can increase and maintain the rate to a hundred parcels per day, I will consider changing agents. But I suggest you go offline first and familiarize yourself with the business,” said the middle-aged man.

Chen Hansheng didn’t think the conditions were unreasonable. “Do you have a business card?”

The middle-aged man handed over a gray business card with the words ‘Zhong Jiancheng, General Manager of Jiangling District Shentong Express Delivery Company’ written on it.

Chen Hansheng put it in his pocket and left without another word.

“How interesting.” Zhong Jiancheng muttered before continuing his work just now.

Chen Hansheng was a veteran in doing business. He knew that to do business is to simply exchange resources. Since he didn’t have much to offer earlier, there was no point in staying any longer in that office. In fact, if he stayed any longer, he would just have wasted both their time.

Once he returned to the internet cafe, Chen Hansheng happily played CS with his roommates for a few rounds. In the afternoon, he invited Yang Shichao and Guo Shaoqiang to eat chicken rice for five yuan. Jin Yangming complained that the chicken was not fresh enough, so he bought beef rice for eight yuan.

At 3 pm, they had a class with Guo Zhongyun and did not dare to skip it, especially since Chen Hansheng was the class president.

Before class started, Hu Linyu went up to Chen Hansheng and asked him to tell his classmates about the class fee.

Chen Hansheng laughed internally. Hu Linyu felt that the fifty yuan class fee was too much and was worried that others would complain about it, so she wanted Chen Hansheng to announce it. After all, he was the one who suggested it.

“Be a little more considerate.”

Chen Hansheng shook his head, then he walked to the podium and loudly said, “Students, we have to pay the class fee in high school, and university is no exception. In the future, the class will hold all kinds of activities and gatherings regularly, so everyone will be charged a fifty-yuan class fee. This money will be used to fund the class activities, and the accounts can be checked at any time.”

When he said this, Chen Hansheng deliberately glanced at Shen Youchu. Sure enough, she was looking at him carefully. After a short moment of eye contact, Shen Youchu lowered her head again.

Chen Hansheng smiled internally. It seemed that Shen Youchu knew that he had helped her pay her share.

Professor Guo Zhongyun walked into the classroom. Chen Hansheng noticed and quickly said, “Those who have money today can hand it in first. If not, don’t forget to pay up tomorrow during class. Our secretary, Hu Linyu, will be responsible for collecting it.”

He spoke as if he was giving orders, and when he was done, Chen Hansheng left the podium.

The fee they were asking for was a little too high and Hu Linyu had been worried that someone would protest. However, when she saw everyone silently agreeing to it, she thought that Chen Hansheng must have very high prestige.

However, it was not a matter of prestige but a matter of negotiation. Even if Professor Guo had been the one to bring it up, suggesting a discussion and voting for the most reasonable fee that everyone could agree on would be difficult.

If they suggested a known amount from the get-go, people would usually oblige, even if some disagreed.

Chen Hansheng and Hu Linyu were already working as a team – one made the major announcements while the other simply recorded and collected. It was just as they had discussed – Hansheng would deal with the big, Linyu would deal with the small.

Guo Zhongyun nodded satisfactorily at the duo. It seemed that Chen Hansheng and Hu Linyu complemented each other quite well.

During the break, Chen Hansheng was bragging to his roommate as usual. Suddenly, he noticed that Jin Yangming and Yang Shichao, the two chatterboxes, had turned silent. Their eyes were looking behind him, and then there came a waft of fragrance up his nose.

Chen Hansheng turned around. The ‘number one beauty’ of Public Administration Class 2, Shang Yanyan, was standing at the table.

“What’s the matter?”

Chen Hansheng wasn’t familiar with Shang Yanyan. She might be a beauty to others, but for him, Xiao Rongyu was more exquisite and Shen Youchu was more beautiful.

However, Shang Yanyan was very confident in her looks. When she introduced herself, she deliberately let her hair down and draped it over her shoulders. Every frown and smile added to her charm.

She smiled at Chen Hansheng and said, “Class President, I’m here to pay the class fee.”

“Didn’t I say to give it to Hu Linyu?” asked Chen Hansheng.

But Shang Yanyan just silently placed the money on the table and left.

Chen Hansheng figured that it might have been due to some kind of politics among the girls. It was normal. It was probably just Shen Youchu who would not have conflicts with others.

After class, those from Room 602 and a few others chatted as they walked to the cafeteria. Jin Yangming suddenly asked Chen Hansheng, “Hansheng, what do you think of Shang Yanyan?”

“Her?”

Chen Hansheng glanced at Jin Yangming and wondered if the latter was interested in her.

Everyone was very interested in this kind of gossip. Guo Shaoqiang encouraged the conversation. “Shang Yanyan is the most beautiful girl in our class. Yangming, I support you in pursuing her. If you get Shang Yanyan, it will also be 602’s honor.”

Yang Shichao also liked Shang Yanyan. After all, she was good-looking. However, he knew that he was just average, so he planned to stay single. When he heard that Jin Yangming had plans to pursue the girl, he was both jealous and sad.

“Yangming, you have to think carefully. Shang Yanyan is so beautiful and her family is not short of money, so I think she is way out of your league. You should go after someone else.”

Yang Shichao pretended to be reasonable as he didn’t dare to confess, but he also didn’t want Shang Yanyan to be pursued by others. The best way was for everyone to be single before he found a girlfriend. That way, he would still have a chance.

“Hansheng, what do you think?” Jin Yangming wanted to hear Chen Hansheng’s opinion.

Chen Hansheng actually didn’t recommend pursuing Shang Yanyan. Judging from Shang Yanyan’s dressing and maturity, she should have been in love several times. She was suitable for an older man more than ten years senior.

Jin Yangming, on the other hand, was like a bean sprout. Shang Yanyan might not take him seriously unless Chen Hansheng was willing to pursue her.

“Playing games like CS is great because you have a progress bar to track your goals. But chasing after a girl doesn’t,” said Chen Hansheng with a laugh.

Jin Yangming felt a little lonely and dejected when he heard that Chen Hansheng didn’t agree with him either. However, Chen Hansheng still encouraged him, “But you can try. You will only be a coward if you keep it in your heart.”

Seeing that Jin Yangming was a little tempted, Chen Hansheng thought that Yangming might be sad later on if he was too positive now.
