Chapter 13 – The dukes son’s younger brother and the uncouth daughter

The next day, I leave the dining room in a good mood, having been served a delicious breakfast at the Duke of Florescence's villa and was told that I am free to read the books in the separate study.

For now, since I am a houseguest, I intend to stay quiet in order not to bother them.

In the duke's study there were many books on magic. I've heard that Lord Nazelbert has more magic power than an ordinary person and is a hard worker when it comes to magic. At the party, the nobles were gossiping about it.

Most of the people in this country are born with magic in their bodies and various magical powers.

They are taken to church when they are children to be examined, or they use magic unconsciously in their daily lives and discover what kind of magic they are capable of using.

The types and strengths of magic that can be handled vary, and the use of magic differs from house to house, with some people mastering it and others not particularly caring about it. By the way, my parents were not interested in magic.

The magic power I was born with was also very modest: "material enhancement", a rare but very simple power.

Therefore, I did not feel inconvenienced by living in a house with no connection to magic. In the first place, there are very few people in this world who can handle strong magic.

However, this house smelled of magic everywhere, including the bookshelves.

Most people would not think of mastering their own magic as Lord Nazelbert does. He is a hard worker.

That is why I feel so sorry for Lord Nazelbert's current situation.

"Not that I can help. Haa, it's hopeless......"

After reading a few simple books, I decided to go back to my room. It might be nice to take a walk outside, but it would be awkward if I ran into someone from the Duke's family.

As I gently opened the door to head upstairs, I heard someone's loud voice. It was a man's voice, but it was not Lord Nazelbert.

"Who is it? Who could it be?"

When I went in the direction where I heard the voice, I found the door to the guest room was open.

I knew it was wrong, but I was curious and approached the room stealthily.

I tried not to be noticed and listened carefully.

Then, I caught a clear conversation with my ears.

"Damn it! I'm against the royal family's way of handling the situation! I feel sorry for you, brother!"

"Calm down, I'm fine. I'm fine. I haven't even received the official royal decree yet."

"But that doesn't mean we should be optimistic! If this continues, you'll end up in the middle of nowhere! And you're being forced to marry the Potato Lady! Why is my brother in such a mess......"

I gasp and move even closer to the door.

From the conversation, I was certain that it was Lord Nazelbert and his younger brother who were inside.

Lord Nazelbert's brother seems to be on his. I am relieved to see that he is not as isolated in the household as I am.

"You'll be the laughing stock of society if you marry her! Brother and that woman are leagues apart!"

I know, it's shocking, but I completely agree with you on that point. We are too different in so many ways.

My status, my appearance, my abilities, I am no good in every conceivable way. I am a marriage partner who is of no benefit to Lord Nazelbert at all.

"You're keeping your distance from her, aren't you? We should get rid of the Potato Lady quickly before strange rumors start to circulate!"

Lord Nazelbert's brother's words are more than correct.

Yeah, it's painful...... I shouldn't have eavesdropped.........

I was just about to turn back to my room after all when I heard Lord Nazelbert's voice echoing from inside the room.

"I will not allow you to insult her. Just so we are clear, I have no intention of kicking Miss Agnes out."

With firm words, he tells his brother.

"Why? You'll only be doing yourself a disservice if you keep that woman around. I'll kick out that ugly, deluded woman myself right now!"

"Stop right there! Julian!!"

Your brother's name is Lord Julian.......?

As I was thinking this innocently, the door opened and bumped into me with great force as someone came out.

"Bwah!"

I was thrown off and rolled across the floor, crashing into a wall.

Following that was the sound of multiple footsteps approaching and the voice of a distressed Miss Naserbert shouting, "Miss Agnes!"

"Oh, not good....... my vision is getting blurry, and my feet are wobbly........"

My consciousness started fading out and was completely cut off when I finally hit my head against the wall with a gong.
