Chapter 42 Death of the Devourer

42 Death of the Devourer

The devourer grew in size, becoming much more menacing and powerful looking. It had evolved and had reinforced its body, making it even more resilient to their attacks. To top it off, it had covered itself in a thick, toxic coating that would harm anyone who came into direct contact with it.

'Is that the second phase?' Stark wondered.

Anyway, Stark now knew that attacking with his fists wasn't an option anymore.

[HP: 1238/1800]

Thanks to the necklace that gave him back life every time he hit an enemy and to his level upgrade, his HP was still fairly good, but he still didn't want to risk it.

He would need to keep using Aura Smash, and hope that the others attacked more than he did since all of them relied on weapons and long-ranged damage.

Everyone watched the devourer in awe, choosing to stand still and assess the situation. The transformation was a clear indication that the guardian was preparing for an all-out attack.

"BLACK STORM!"

The sky above became darker than it was before, and clouds appeared, lightning coming out from them.

The Black Water also became much more agitated than before, making it harder for them to move, even Hero and Stark, who had the highest speed of the group, struggled.

"Aura Smash!" Stark sent two fists of aura again, and the monster didn't even bother to avoid it, too focused on controlling the storm.

"-4312! -3927!"

'Holy shit, it can actually tank damage now...'

[Enemy stunned]

'YES!' Stark almost shouted to the others, but...

[Enemy is immune to status effect: "Stun"]

'...'

[Dealt damage to GUARDIAN, regaining 91HP!]

"It can tank attacks now, we should really focus on taking it down as fast as we can, that thing looks pissed," Hero wasn't smiling anymore.

[Black Water Devourer HP: 42811/120000]

~ZAP~

Lightning hit the water close to Stark, but avoided it.

"It's too focused on controling the water, kill it!" Stark shouted. n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om

"FINALLY SOME FUN," Hero activated [Hero's Resolve], his two swords glowing with a silver aura as he dashed toward the devourer again.

It seems like the [Hero's Resolve] was a skill that boosted Hero's abilities and damage output, but afterward he would become exhausted.

High risk, high reward.

~SLASH, SLASH, SLASH~

He attacked the devourer over and over and over...

"-3526! -4315! -2371! -7462!"

The devourer received the damage of all the other attacks.

[Black Water Devourer HP: 0/120000]

There was a moment of silence as the team watched in horror, realizing what had just happened. Dreamer lay motionless on the ground, and the devourer was defeated.

"Ah shit... we lost another one," Hero shook his head, "I really believed we could all get out alive too..."

"..." Orasio was staring at Dreamer's body with a blank expression.

"Well, let's go," Stark, not showing any emotions, pointed at a door that appeared beside the Devourer's body.

They began walking toward the door, and soon enough passed through it.

Yet again, they found themselves in a chamber with stone walls and at the end were four small oval mirrors hanged against the wall.

And for the second time, each of them approached a mirror and broke it, which resulted in them being transported back to the 'Colossal Paths'.

And of course, the panels appeared soon after.

[3 participants alive]

[You have slain "Black Water Devourer (GUARDIAN)", gained 250000EXP!]

[Second path cleared, one remains]

'Damn, this much EXP...'

[Your level has increased to level 13, granting you one skill point and boost in stats]

But surprisingly enough, he wasn't enveloped just once with the golden glow... but twice!

[Your level has increased to level 14, granting you one skill point and boost in stats]

[Experience: 77617/180000]

[HP: 2500/2500]

After checking their level and status windows, the three participants of the trial pointed at the statue of the Sphinx.

The second pearl on its forehead was now glowing with a deep blue color, and only one was unlit now.

"We take a break and then we finish this, I really want to get away from this place," Hero spoke and sat on the ground.

And so just like that, only one guardian remained before they could meet the 'Greater One'.

Dreamer had died out nowhere in front of their eyes, but it served as a lesson: don't be confident until the enemy is actually dead, or else you might just die.

This was a Death-Level trial, one of the hardest ever, so they would need to be warry of anything that could kill them.

'I made it this far, I really want that reward now,' Stark smirked.
