Mob High School Student Loses

“Hey! Seiya! Look at this! I landed within double digits this time you know!”

The test was over and the scores for all subjects were confirmed yesterday so during our homeroom today we will receive our provisional ranking.

Right now the teacher is handing out the report card in the order of our attendance numbers and Masato who received his result before me excitedly came over to boast about his ranking.

“Hmm, let’s see? 90th huh…..why are your scores beside Japanese, math, and English are so horrible! HOW!”

“Oi you idiot, don’t say that! You don’t even know if you are within 10th to 99th rank yet right! Don’t talk about those little things!”

“…..don’t worry, it’s not like someone who is so happy about getting into the double digits is going to overtake me right?……That aside, what happened to the other subjects………”

The average score for Japanese is 56 and Masato scored 84, he also scored 79 in math even though the average is 50.

Seeing at the score distribution, it seems that since the number of questions in the math test was very small, the scores were divided into two polar opposite between high score and fail score.

Japanese was as usual but it seemed that there were many students who lost points to classical Japanese and kanji writing.

Well, since we all studied these two subjects together, it is understandable if his score is on the high side. Rather, this score would make sense as the result of our study session.

However, in other subjects like physics that the average score is 41, Masato got 20, and in social study which has the average score at 75, he only scored 52.

The physics test was clearly difficult seeing how low the average score is but for social study there were a lot of multiple-choice questions. If he studies a little, he should easily be able to get the average score.

By the way, the fail point is at 40 or lower for all subjects. And since that is the case, he failed two.

“Well, since we all studied together that day I felt kinda confident you see? That’s why I haven’t studied anything since that day! I didn’t expect that I would fail two subjects though.”

“Then did you devote all your time to English? You got 94 you know? That’s probably even higher than my score…..rather, isn’t that the highest score?”

“No, I’m originally good at English so I didn’t study anything you know?”

“Ha?…….whatever, the teacher is calling me, I’m going to grab my score now.”

Receiving the paper from the teacher, I check the score and my rank. Since it was in the order of score, average score, and ranking, I checked each one by one.

“No way……I lost to him in English……?”

My English score written in the paper was 83. I already knew the rough score since the test was returned to me but I never thought that I would lose to him by 10 points.

No, to be honest, it would be more correct to say that I didn’t want to believe it because I was confident that I will get a pretty good score myself this time.

“Let’s see…..my rank, oh! 18th huh!”

Although this rank was based only on raw scores, I am 10 ranks higher than last time.

The reason for this sudden rise must really be the study session since my scores in social study and math have increased.

Because I managed to finish studying math and Japanese first, I was able to spend more time on subjects that need memorization and focus on the subjects that I am not good at like English.

I’m glad that my rank went up and that I scored more on the subjects that I wasn’t good at but what is this feeling…..

I feel like I’ve won the battle but lost the war. No, I mean…..I just lost to a guy who didn’t even study……right?

“Did your rank increase too? Seiya.”

“I’ve got 18th this time but I lost to you in English…….just why are you so good at English……..”

“Oh, I’m great right! You don’t have to praise me so much!”

“I’m not praising you alright? You don’t have anything else besides English alright!?”

Since he had to attend supplementary lessons last time, he should have gotten failed scores in some subjects but his ranking must have been pulled up by his English score alone.

“Well, there’s a reason I like English you know? All the bands I like all sing in English after all. I was translating the lyrics so before I knew it……it’s like this.”

“Seriously……you learned all that by humming those English songs…….”

“By the way, what is your English score this time?’

“83. My score is usually above average and I thought that getting over 80 is enough but I can’t say I can admit my defeat to you who didn’t study and just naturally good at it you know…..!”

“Aren’t you being too harsh on me, Oi!”

This is because I know for sure that he’s slacking off from the failed scores he got.

If I had been defeated by a guy who usually doesn’t study but was seriously studying this time I would have no hard feelings.

People like that would say that they had no idea the test was coming up and stayed up until 3 am to study for it.

In spite of that, they didn’t get any failed score and on the contrary, they nonchalantly exceeded the average score.

“Hey, did you study for this test?”

“Yeah! It was terrible you know! I thought about studying but I ended up neglecting it until yesterday so I stayed up all night to study last night……”

“You too huh! I didn’t study much too you know……In the end, I only managed to cover one subject myself.”

When you ask someone like that if they studied for the test, they would answer that they didn’t and only stayed up the night before to study for it.

However, that is actually not the case.

They were waiting for that question! They have been studying so hard until the day before the test to the extent that they messed up their life rhythm and just concentrated on the subject they are not good at on the final night. Personally, 3 am is my limit. Still, It doesn’t matter if you really stay up all night! I mean you can leave school early on test days so you have plenty of time to takes nap once you get back!

The opposite of those guys would be the humble warrior who always uses the word [Almost].

‘I almost didn’t study at all, taking bath and get to bed already took all my time so I didn’t have much time to study alright!’

They thought they studied hard and intensively on the subjects or the question that will show up in the test but they still couldn’t solve the problems in the end…..

However, there are those who do not conform to either. The serious people. It’s not that they are seriously studying, they seriously trying their best to not study.

“Did you study this time?”

“Crap! It’s today!? I thought that’s next week!”

“No way, you should have noticed that the school suspended the club activities already right!…….Well, I didn’t study either so I can’t say anything though! HaHaHa!”

Did you study this time? That question might have come out as casual but it actually came out of desperation.

What comes after that would be I didn’t study at all, did you make any notes? If you did then lend some to me! Like that.

However, the other party’s reply will always be ruthless.

Without realizing that it is the day of the exam, they only brought studying materials for normal lessons.

Through the combination of desperation and complete obliviousness, born the wonderland of pain. However, you can find comfort in that wonderland by having a comrade.

It’s not so bad if I will not be the only one who fails!

Masato is certainly in this group. Because of his overconfidence from the study session, he became the no-study warrior.

No, he may have always been one in the first place. But at least this time he has the free pass ticket through the wonderland.

“Anyway, take this.”

“Nn? What’s that…….”

When our talk finished, Masato suddenly gave me a folded piece of paper so I opened it.

[I got 40th place and Reika got 1st! So do your best to throw the takoyaki party for us okay!]

“…..Ha?”

I immediately looked up and turned to Ichinose-san and Eihashi-san.

Ichinose-san gave me a peace sign while Eihashi-san waved at me.

Right……the attendance numbers are alphabetical. Obviously, they would receive the score before me…….

Rather, 1st place!? She just cleared the condition I gave her!

What was it……takoyaki party at my place right? I have one takoyaki pan at home but how much does it cost normally?

When I was thinking about that, a loud voice saying [NO WAY!?] suddenly raised in the classroom.

That’s…..Misunashi was it? Ah, I see. So that’s the guy that always gets first place huh?

You are no longer the smart mob. And I myself might no longer be counted among the mobs anymore.

Give up, it’s our loss. Both yours and mine!

“……alright, let’s pretend that I don’t know anything about this and sneak home.”

I will act like I didn’t notice anything today. I will buy the pan and contact them this weekend instead. Right, that way I shouldn’t stand out

TLN: The test arc should almost be over with this right? I want him to get back to modelling already……
