My room——It’s gone!!?
Our house is one with a long history in our rural town…… a two-story Japanese-style single house that our family has been living in since my grandfather’s generation.
It seems that it was built at the time the surrounding areas are still rice fields. Even now, our plot of land is still considered to be unusually large and our house has quite a big garden. In turn, when it’s summer we usually have to deal with hordes of mosquitoes though.
It may be because I grew up here that I like the smell of wood that is peculiar to old houses like mine and the tatami mats that are hard to see nowadays despite their very visible shortcomings. Also, I dislike the chemical-like smell of modern houses.
“I’m home……I can still say that right?”
“I’m home! There’s no one here though!”
“It’s fine, even if you started living alone, we are still your parents, right? I wouldn’t mind it if you get married and become independent soon though?”
“Yeah. But it’s not like you can only have one home so even after you make your own family, it’s fine to say that whenever you come back here alright.”
I ignore the latter half of my mother’s words and think upon what my father said.
…..right. Even in a certain cube crafting game, you can make one or two bases with no problem. Moreover, if you have enough resources then you can even build yourself a villa.
Even if I’m away from this place for a long time, there’s no need to think too much about it and say I’m home whenever I get back. After all, this is the home my parents raised me in. Besides, I like it here too.
“Nn, alright then, I’m going to put away my luggage first okay.”
“Ah! Onii-chan, wait! Your room is—-.”
Misaki was saying something to me but I wouldn’t get lost inside my own house right. It’s 15 years of my life. I wouldn’t just forget its layout since I lived here until I entered high school after all.
My room is here, at the end of the second-floor corridor. Once I open the door my nostalgic old bed and desk would be………..gone!? Why are there only cardboard boxes, PET bottles, and sweets here!?
No way, did I really mistake the way to my own room? No, that’s impossible. The ceiling still has a hole I made when I was a child. This is surely my room.
But what has become of it? What is this after that moving conversation? Eh? Don’t tell me—–
“—It’s a shame that I have to interrupt this but you don’t have a room right now so can you put your luggage in my room for now, Onii-chan?”
“………my room’s gone? Eh, I’m not welcome here anymore?”
“No no no no! Don’t get so pessimistic! We had new telephone lines installed just before summer vacation so we moved Onii-chan’s textbooks for the high school entrance exam to my room and packed the things that we don’t want the workers to see and some extra things from my room into yours, that’s all!”
……..come to think of it, when I contacted my home last time before the summer vacation they did say something about construction workers huh.
“By the way, where’s my bed? I understand the desk but there’s no need to move my bed right?”
“Uuu, I’m using it right now! I’ve been sleeping on a futon all this time so I moved it to my room when we were organizing things! Onii-chan hardly comes home so it’s fine right!?”
“Well, I don’t mind you having my bed but……where should I sleep now? The sofa in the living room?
“Th, there’s a futon that I used to sleep in so Onii-chan can use that. About the room……since I want Onii-chan to help me study, y, you can sleep in mine!”
So she does feel sorry that I don’t have a place to sleep huh.
Well, having no place to sleep is indeed a problem but sleeping in the same room as Misaki is not a problem at all. We’ve been doing that when she came to visit my apartment after all.
Rather, I’d feel guilty taking away Misaki’s bed too. Misaki should also feel guilty to—-I guess not huh.”
“If that’s the case then I guess I will leave my luggage in your room huh.”
“Y, Yeah! I’m going downstairs first….don’t do anything weird inside okay!”
“……what do you think I am.”
While complaining about how she treats her own brother like a pervert, I head to Misaki’s room. ……..That being said, Misaki’s room is just next door so it’s barely inconvenient.
When I opened the sliding door, I found my bed and desk inside. All my stuff’s here……rather, my bed is so big it’s no wonder why Misaki packed some of her stuff into my room.
When I stepped into the room, the sweet scent of a girl wafted to my nos——wait, what am I thinking about my own sister’s room. Let’s just leave my luggage here and head to the living room.
Misaki and my mother are watching TV in the living room. Also, I can smell something nice from the kitchen. My father is probably cooking something there.
In my house, my father is in charge of fried foods while my mother specializes in Japanese dishes.
By the way, all my cooking skills came from watching my father.
“Seiya, since it’s Obon why don’t you go visit the grave before dinner? Take Misaki with you too.”
“I should be done in about an hour so you can go now. I’m making your favorite fried chicken today by the way.”
“Ahh, that’s right. Let’s go.”
“Okay.”
Since I live alone at my apartment, I can’t cook fried chicken on my own since I would leave too much leftover oil so I’m looking forward to this. While hiding my excitement about dinner, I make my way to the front
door.
