I’ve Been Exiled, But I’m Alive and Well - Chapter 78

The men collected the insects and went back to their own homes.

The only ones left was me, Jed, and Giselle. We walked around the back alleys to continue guarding the area.

“Was it alright to forgive them?”

I shrugged my shoulders at Giselle, who gave me a look that seems to say, "Weren’t you too easy on them?”

I don't know if I can forgive them, but they had their own circumstances. And I didn't feel comfortable handing them over to the guards who triggered this incident.

“I would have caught them if they were just a bunch of pranksters, but the circumstances are what they are.”

“You're as lenient as ever.”

She shook her head in disbelief.

It seems that she thought I was still naive. But this is the only way to go about this.

"Let's leave them out of this for now. It's the guards that are the problem.”

The last time I visited the Principality of Agreable, the patrol guards were doing their job properly. I didn’t feel like the country was insecure. Maybe it felt that way because as a daughter of a Duke, I was constantly under full security, but still, the Principality now felt strange. I wonder what's going on.

“Should I look into the patrol guards?”

“Can you do that for me?”

I nodded to Giselle, and she replied, "Give me two days.” I wondered how she could do it in just two days. I'm sure she'll gather the information, though.

“Can you do it in just two days?”

Giselle gave Jed a dazzling smile that almost told him not to ask any more questions, and a bitter smile formed on his face.

I guess the distance between the two of them will not be shortened for now.

“Giselle, I will take care of the security while you are investigating.”

“Eh? But I…”

“Don’t overdo it.”

Giselle is a good worker and a good judge of character. But she is still just a normal girl. If she overexerted herself, she could collapse.

It must be hard to investigate the patrol guards and guard the back alleys at the same time. I didn't want her to overexert herself and end up collapsing.

“Elle and I will take care of the security, so don’t overexert yourself.”

“Hah?”

She was trying to pick a fight with Jed again.

She looked away when I called her name, "Giselle," accusingly.

“... Understood. In return, Mr. Jed, you will be responsible for the night security.”

“Alright.”

“Miss Elle, you will be on the daylight security duty, okay?”

It didn’t matter if it was a nighttime security or not to me, but since I was the one who brought it up, it was only logical that I will be in charge at night as well.

I was going to argue with her, but Jed also said that he agreed with Giselle's opinion.

“You are a girl, Elle, you shouldn’t be walking outside late at night.”

“That’s right. You should leave that to the man.”

I smiled at Giselle, who had been fighting with Jed earlier, but now she was on his side.

I would normally want to argue with them, but given the personalities of the two of them, I don't think they would give in. Besides, it would be better for each of them to be in charge of different tasks.

I think it's better to compromise here.

“I understand. I'll take care of the daytime security, Jed will take care of the nighttime, and Giselle will investigate the patrol guards.”

The two of them nodded in satisfaction at my words.
