Vol. 13 - Ch. 13 - Gad’s Secret

I died.By the hand of an adventurer taking the C-rank advancement exam, no less.

I don’t understand.

That bastard is a D-rank guy, for crying out loud!

And yet, that guy, he, to me….

No, it’s impossible. There must be a mistake.

I rushed toward Halt after reviving myself with my magic artifact.

And yet, that guy had already prepared his next spell, as if he already expected this.

"Fire Lance"—that guy chanted that.

I have a bracelet that could withstand magic attacks from even attribute dragons, but he easily obliterated me just with that spell.

In the past, I got a magic device called the "Necklace of Revival" in a dungeon.

As long as I’m wearing it, I would never die. Thanks to the bracelet’s effect, I pushed myself to the limits to become stronger.

I’m still wearing this magical tool, of course.

That’s why I’m still alive.

I came back to life despite being hit by that insanely powerful magic spell.

Intelligent monsters would usually leave the place thinking they already killed me, or they would stand dumbfounded if I revived while they’re trying to eat me. I took advantage of these situations so that I could slay monsters that had higher levels than me.

That’s also true even for people. When I’d been weakened, I would use my "death" as a decoy, then kill all those who looked down on me.

People and monsters were similar; they would lower their guards once they thought they had killed their opponent.

And yet, Halt was different. He was already set for his next attack, as if he knew I would be revived.

Why?! Why didn’t you lower your guard?!

There’s also something that I don’t understand.

That guy chanted [Fire Lance] every time he used that spell.

Some people could cast magic without chanting, although it’d be less powerful. Even so, it’s still impossible to invoke a spell using a chant for a completely different spell. But what the heck, that attack was definitely not Fire Lance, the lowest level fire attribute magic!!

And now I’m about to die for the third time already.

A certain amount of information passed through my mind while watching that f*&#$ly huge pillar of fire hurtling toward me. Kiel, the vice-captain of our unit, said something about this guy.

Halt was Cain’s brother.

Cain, that guy, was a Bakemono.

I fought against him several times under His Majesty’s orders, but I never won against him.

Cain didn’t kill me because the king would stop him. Well, he probably won’t finish me off considering we’re also ex-colleagues.

Still, if it’s an actual battle, then I’d use the power of my magical device, catch Cain off guard, then finish him off. Yeah, I do think he’s a Bakemono, but he’d still die if slain.

Well, there’s no doubt that the bastard was a Bakemono, but so was his brother. It took me three rounds of death before I realized this.

Third revival in this place.

I kept on coming back to life, but Halt and his comrades didn’t even so much as flinch.

Did they already know that I could revive?

There’s a reason why I came to that conclusion.

Kiel didn’t return last night. He told me that there was something bothering him so he would scout Halt’s mansion. He hadn’t returned until now.

Kiel’s intel gathering as an information broker was top-notch, I give him that. The information he got was always accurate and usually something hard to get your hands on. Not only that, he never leaves any evidence of his infiltration. That’s the sort of guy he was, and yet he didn’t come back.

No way, did Halt catch him?

I didn’t think that was possible, but…

Kiel’s the only guy who knew I could come back to life infinite times.

It’s reasonable to think that Halt and his comrades didn’t bat a single eye when I revived because Kiel got captured.

That guy may be an excellent spy, but he won’t hesitate to switch sides to save his butt. At least that’s how he was when he was still working as my subordinate.

The revival was finished. Halt’s spell was hurtling toward me.

It’s already the fourth time, so of course I could evade this to some extent.

Well, not completely, though.

Still, I could stop this fight thanks to that.

It’s boring always getting killed off, after all. S~ᴇaʀᴄh the n0vᴇl(ꜰ)ire.ɴet website on Gøøglᴇ to access chapters of nøvels early and in the highest quality.

I didn’t care anymore.

I felt my life ebbing away, I surrendered to Halt.

This was a game.

If I admit defeat, then Halt won’t be able to do anything to me, regardless if he was a monster.

That’s the rule of this game.

At any rate, I said some stuff trying to gloss over my revival.

Was it too bland?

Well… Nah, whatever.

Alright, next.

Let’s crush those little friends of his so I could vent out this fury that I got bottled up all because of that Bakemono Halt!
