Manpower Agency 31.1
Chapter 31.1 – The War Doesn’t End When You Return Home
AN: Story of a certain magic organ-less veteran.
He’s not the guy from chapter 28.
TN: This is the guy in the manga.
Life is full of peaks and valleys.
I remember being the commander of a unit that was on the verge of collapse and firing thunderbolts at the onrushing enemy soldiers.
I was dragged back to the fort, apparently, by my men. When I woke up, I saw the apologetic face of the healing mage.
From that point, things developed furiously.
Staff visits, awards, encouragement, and discharge.
All that remained in my possession were my medals, my pension book, and my body that no longer has a magic organ.
My wife, who was waiting for me at home, smiled helplessly and said, “It’s a good thing we had a child earlier.”.
That’s certainly fortunate. My, Baron Gosushin, family is safe as long as I have a son.
But, what about me?
My hellish days have just begun.
Life without magic is full of inconveniences that I had never been aware of.
I can’t smoke alone anymore and I even have to use a magic tool to light a cigarette.
Magic crystals are expensive if you buy them yourself.
However, from now on, our family of three is only living on pension so we have to save money.
Even in toilets, I have to manually fill it with water.
Using a ladle to stir up a jar makes me feel miserable.
When I wake up in the middle of the night, I can’t even read a book.
I can’t use night vision or light.
Well, there are many inconveniences but it can’t be helped.
What made me more miserable than anything else was the fact that I couldn’t get any kind of job.
As a workaholic, this hit me hard.
Veterans can become teachers or work on railways but both are impossible for someone that can’t use magic.
What am I living for?
What the hell am I?
Was I such a worthless person if I couldn’t use magic?
After three years of agony, my body began to change.
Apparently, I had severe diarrhea.
I switched my diet to softer, easier-to-digest food.
My complexion was also bad.
I also got a cough.
I don’t exercise so I might have upset my own body.
It has been five years since I’ve been discharged from the army.
My health condition is getting worse.
I often need to lie down.
When my son entered the boarding house of the military academy, it seemed like the fire in our house had gone out.
No one comes to visit and loneliness eats away my heart.
My hair had begun to fall out and I clearly aged.
Given my age, I should still be able to walk around the town energetically.
What’s happening to me? What’s going to happen to me….
It has been exactly 10 years since I lost my magic organ.
I already find it hard to stand and walk these days.
My stomach and chest are full of pain.
I became an old man.
My wife and I look like a pair of father and daughter.
I once asked her to divorce me but she shook her head with a gentle expression.
She said, “You’ve done so much for the country that you lost your magic organ. I’m not going to leave you alone.”. The last time I cried so hard like this was when I was discharged.
In the midst of these days of waiting for death, I received a letter.
It was from my former superior in the army.
He had already retired from the army but he said he would come to see me.
I refused, not wanting to see the present me.
However, he insisted on meeting me.
After many back and forth letters, I finally agreed.
By that time, I couldn’t even stand up.
「Your magic organ can be regenerated.」
「Wha」
I was stupefied.
I had already lost all my teeth and was now an old man.
My former boss looked young.
However, can a magic organ be regenerated?
I’ve never heard of it.
「The healing mage is a commoner and the army has decided not to disclose that fact. However, we want to reward you for your dedication. Therefore, we will send you there in secret to be healed.」
「Fuwaaa」
「Rest assured. He’s a skilled professional who has already treated many people with the same condition as you. I’ve already told your wife what to do. I’ll see you in the salon next time.」
With those words, my former boss made a sound with his saber and left.
As usual, he’s a person without emotion.
However, I’m glad to see that old man’s face again before I die.
I dozed off and before I knew it, I was forced to change my clothes and ride the train.
My consciousness is already vague.
This is not a passenger car. It’s probably a freight car.
The train was surrounded by a black curtain and only the sound of the tracks could be heard.
「Wer」
My wife’s voice was inaudible but she replied “To Torquiva”.
Torquiva is a prosperous agricultural region.
There was nothing special about that place…..
As I was thinking about it, my consciousness slowly faded away.
The healing mage, Sawadi Schenker, looked only slightly older than my son.
His fiancée, a former army major, is standing next to him. She’s probably at least 10 years older than him.
An older wife that’s an ex-military officer, sounds like a lot of work.
「Gosushin-san, your body is in a pretty bad shape so let’s heal it first, shall we?」
He said so casually. He’s writing something and he looks so young.
I heard that he has already healed a lot of people like me so far but…..
Can this boy really regenerate my magic organ?
My wife, who’s standing beside me, also looked worried.
What’s going to happen to us?
