Chapter 422: Chapter 391: Monster_1
Thump! Thump! Thump!
The heavy sound of footsteps kept coming from outside. The woman’s eyes widened with fear, her right hand covering her son’s mouth tightly, afraid he would make the slightest noise.
But none of this could stop the approach of those footsteps.
When the footsteps reached the bedroom door, they suddenly stopped. The woman’s heart pounded in her chest.
Don’t come in! Don’t come in!
She prayed desperately in her heart.
The next moment, with a loud boom, the door was shattered. A mammoth figure, two meters tall and standing with its back to the moonlight, barged in, like a towering wall.
“Ahhhh!”
Unable to suppress her fear, the woman let out a scream. A warm liquid soaked her trousers, but she was too terrified to care.
The bulky shadow paid no heed to the woman’s screams and step by step it approached the bed. A large, hairy hand reached out to grab the child in the woman’s lap.
“Waaaah!”
The child burst into tears, his face devoid of color. He had no idea how to dodge nor had a place to hide.
Just as the dark, furry hand was about to grab the child, an ordinary-looking hand suddenly reached out and stopped the beastly hand midway.
“I’m sorry, but you can’t harm anyone here,” Xu Mu said with a smile.
“Roar!”
The shadowy figure let out a monstrous roar, and it struggled using all its might, but it could not break free from Xu Mu’s seemingly ordinary left hand.
Whoo!
The furious figure raised its other hand high end and aimed for Xu Mu. However, in the next moment, its body was thrown backward, shattering the broken door even more, and even knocking off the doorframe.
“I apologize, ma’am! Your house is a bit small, and I ended up damaging your door!” Xu Mu apologized.
The woman was so scared that she looked stupefied, not knowing what to say. Her son in her arms, who still held some sense, was staring at Xu Mu with awe.
Xu Mu turned and walked towards the yard. The figure that he had thrown had already stood up. Under the moonlight, the figure’s appearance was finally visible.
It was a giant black bear, covered in black hair, with a round head, big ears, red eyes, a naked snout, and standing like a human.
Its seven-feet stature and burly physique, along with a mouthful of sharp teeth, was enough to send chills down anyone’s spine.
Yet, Xu Mu couldn’t help but look at it with interest.
“So, are you a bear spirit, a bear-man, or a half-beast humanoid?” Xu Mu asked.
“Roar!”
The bear spirit paid no heed to Xu Mu’s words, its clear cognizance mixed with blind rage. Its thick bear paws ejected sharp claws, and there was a faint scent of blood around its body. It roared and charged towards Xu Mu.
Due to his prosthetic left leg not being able to apply force, Xu Mu didn’t dodge. He simply extended his left hand and casually swiped twice, easily blocking the bear spirit’s forceful pounce.
Before the bear spirit could launch another attack, Xu Mu took a step forward, and palm thumped on its chest.
Thump!
A dull sound emerged from the bear’s chest. The bear’s huge body violently shook, and the aura dissipated. It retreated several steps, then thumped to the ground. Its body twitched for a while before it stopped moving completely, blood started to bubble out from its gaping mouth.
Xu Mu checked and confirmed that it was a half-human, half-bear creature. Black Bear Spirit was an appropriate name indeed.
The only thing he didn’t understand was how such a creature existed in a world devoid of Spiritual Energy.
The technology of this world didn’t seem to have reached the level of creating genetically modified beasts.
Footsteps sounded from behind. Xu Mu turned around to look.
The shivering woman, whose legs seemed to disobey her, just exited the room. Seeing the corpse of the bear spirit lying on the floor, and her child safe and unharmed, she slumped to the ground once again.
Xu Mu intended to help her up but figured it wouldn’t be appropriate and hence stopped himself.
“Ma’am, do you know what this is?” Xu Mu asked.
“The monster that eats people! It’s dead! It’s dead! Haha! Boo hoo!”
The woman was simultaneously crying and laughing. She was in a daze, not hearing a word Xu Mu was saying. Helpless, Xu Mu waited for her to calm down.
While the woman had still not calmed down, the child ran out from the room. Although his face showed fear and shock, he was still conscious.
“It’s a demon living in the mountains. It often comes down to eat people. My father was eaten by it!” the child said.
“Oh! A demon? Are there many such demons around here?” Xu Mu asked.
“No! Just this one!” The boy shook his head.
“Do you know where this demon came from?”
“Village elder said it transformed from a city dweller.”
The boy’s answer took Xu Mu by surprise.
Transformed from city dwellers, what does that even mean? Does that mean all city dwellers are demons?
Xu Mu was a bit stupefied.
“Do you know how he transformed? And are there many such demons in the city?”
“I don’t know! The village elder might know. Shall I call him for you?”
The boy was quite brave. Even in such a situation, he didn’t cry and suggested getting help.
But Xu Mu stopped him.
“No need to call him. I think he’ll be here soon,” Xu Mu said with a faint smile.
He could hear the commotion around him. The otherwise still-silent village had many lights glowing now, as if it had come back to life.
The woman was still sitting on the ground, staring blankly at the massive bear corpse.
“Oh!”
The boy nodded. Although he didn’t quite understand, he agreed.
He glanced at his mother then turned to look at Xu Mu again, his innocent big eyes shining brightly.
“Big brother, are you Martial Artist?”
“What’s Martial Artist?” Xu Mu countered.
“Very powerful people. Village elder said that only a Martial Artist can kill demons!”
“I suppose you could say that!”
Xu Mu laughed.
He inferred that the Martial Artist the boy was talking about was the cultivator of this world. However, their cultivation system seemed to differ from his.
The existence of cultivators in this world was the best news Xu Mu had heard so far.
With the system, as long as he could cultivate, he was confident of reaching the highest level. Leaving this place wouldn’t be difficult then.
The boy and Xu Mu continued conversing. The boy was too young and possessed very limited knowledge. As a result, Xu Mu wasn’t able to gather much useful information.
Before long, some of the braver villagers peeked into the yard. Seeing the dead bear spirit on the ground, and the mother and son unscathed, they dared to enter the yard and inquire about the situation.
Finally, the woman regained consciousness. Her eyes red from crying, she bowed to Xu Mu in gratitude.
“There’s no need to be formal. You offered me food, so I simply returned the favor. I can’t just freeload, can I?” Xu Mu said with a laugh.
More and more villagers gathered in the yard, but no one dared to approach Xu Mu. This continued until an elderly man leaning on a crutch squeezed through the crowd.
“Did you kill this demon?”
