Chapter 137: Wave of Death

The earth trembled. The stars hid out of fright.

The sky suddenly became so dark that the only lights were those on the city wall, such that Asudo couldn’t clearly see what was happening.

But this terrifying commotion brought him ten years back, when he witnessed an avalanche. Terrifying white snow crushed everything, be it humans, livestock, or buildings. He realized that humans were so terribly insignificant before that despair-inducing calamity.

And now, he was feeling the same suffocating despair once more.

“Activate the barriers! Operate the defense towers! Inform the other city gates!” Asudo bellowed. “Have the others do the same too! Also...”

He turned to the mage. “Illuminate that area!”

Something must be happening out there, and...

Weng!

A faint blue barrier manifested, shrouding the city walls with a flickering light.

At the same time, lightning reminiscent of silver snakes crackled around the defense towers. Lightning bolts gushed into the sky, illuminating the lands beyond the city walls.

And what was revealed amidst the darkness...

“AH?!”

“It can’t be...”

Gasps could be heard on the city walls.

Those who were less mentally resilient collapsed to the ground, with a wet mark and an awful stench appearing between their legs.

Asudo was stunned.

What was revealed beneath the lightning was a sea of white, but this white signified something sinister, terrifying, and deathly...

An army of skeletons wielding bone swords and bone shields stretched to the horizon, making it impossible to fathom its scale!

“...”

What is going on?

Asudo felt light-headed. He had thought that it was an attack from the Tang army, but now...

“Young master!” a slightly older Tibetan soldier suddenly screeched in shock, “It’s the Tang army! It’s the Anxi army!”

“What did you say?” Asudo looked at the Tibetan soldier in confusion.

The Tibetan soldier stared at the familiar silhouettes before him with a trembling profile, too shaken up to answer the question.

White hair, heavy armor, and the dark red flag fluttering amidst the darkness—those were marks of the Anxi army!

Crk crk crk!

It was impossible for the skeletons, with their 0 magic resistance, to withstand the lightning onslaught. In the blink of an eye, most of the charging skeletons were either reduced to cinders or exploded into bits.

Hu!

The Tibetan soldiers breathed a sigh of relief.

“That’s good, that’s good.”

Many patted their chests in relief. That nearly scared their souls out of them. They had thought they were goners when they saw the sea of white bones charging at their city, but the skeletons turned out to be weaker than they looked.

Despite their terrifying appearance, they were weaker than mere farmers. They were practically useless except for their sheer number.

Those stationed in the sentry posts must have panicked at the sight of these monsters and fled in fright.

However...

“Hm?”

Despite being bombarded by lightning defense towers, melted by the barrier, and torched by beast heads on the city gates—there was now a thick layer of bone ashes lying beneath the city walls—the skeletons displayed no signs of retreating.

The skeletons continued to fearlessly throw themselves at the city, much to the Tibetan soldiers’ shock.

“This is bad!” Asudo blurted out.

Are these skeletons similar to the warrior puppets created by master? Do they have no mind of their own, know not of fatigue or fear, and exist for the sole sake of taking down their enemies?

If that’s the case, the only way we can win this battle is to either kill the mage behind this or eliminate every last one of these skeletons.

Asudo immediately ruled out the second option, knowing that it was an impossible task given the sheer number of skeletons he was seeing.

As for the first option...

That man beneath the Great Tang flag should be the mage commanding these monsters, right? But it looks like I’ll have to first accomplish the second option in order to reach him...

“They have come prepared.” Asudo sighed.

They hadn’t even quelled the unease in the city when these monsters suddenly struck.

There’s no choice.

Asudo gritted his teeth and made up his mind. He turned to the warriors and mages and instructed, “You hold the fort here first. These monsters will take some time to breach the city gates. I’ll first head to the City Lord Manor to help my father suppress the rebellions before returning with reinforcement.”

“Ah?” A Tibetan soldier looked at Asudo in confusion. “Young master, are you only bringing fifteen people with you? Will they be enough?”

“They are enough,” Asudo replied with a proud smile.
