Sitting at the edge of the bed, Ever clasped her hands together and bit her lips nervously a she waited for Jayden to come out of the bathroom. When she heard the doorknob turning, she quickly jumped into the bed, turning her face away from him, she pretended to be asleep by closing her eyes.
Jayden who saw through her act smiled and walked closer, he pulled the quilt which was squeezed under her and Ever's alert bells started ringing in her ears. As she felt the movement of the quilt, she squeezed her face not daring to open her eyes as her mind wandered far and wide.
''What is he doing? He is not trying to sleep on the bed, right? Ever, what would you do if he decides to sleep on the bed?'' she asked herself internally.
Jayden looked at her face and shook his head before covering her body properly with the quilt saying, "I just want to cover you up properly, the weather is getting cold. I'm doing this because I don't want my precious worker to get cold and not be able to work for me tomorrow''
''Don't worry, I don't fall sick or catch cold that easily'' Ever said and opened her eyes meeting his, she didn't when he had gotten so closed to her face. She flushed and shut her eyes back making Jayden to chuckle. He left her side and went to the couch at the other side of the room and laid on it.
He soon closed his eyes and drifted into sleep. When Ever heard the soft sleeping sounds, she opened her eyes and looked at him. He didn't have anything covering him.
''And he said he didn't want me to catch cold'' she muttered and got down from the bed, picking the quilt, she walked closer to him and covered him up. When she finished and turned to go, a hand grab unto her wrist and pulled her down into his embrace. Ever flushed and tried to pry herself away but it only made the other person hold on tightly.
''Don't leave me again, Everest France. I missed you so much'' Jayden muttered in his sleep and Ever looked at his. His breath brushing her face sensually as a tear dropped from her face.
''Why did you sleep with her then?'' she said and forcefully pulled herself away from him and went back to the bed.
....
Just as she predicted, the deserts that were chosen by the chief secretary of the governor wasn't easy ones. They were French deserts that required time and skill, but even with that, one had to monitor the temperature of the ingredients, time used in preparing and time of service because accurate timing was what made the deserts worth it to the one eating it.
After getting to the kitchen, Ever found out some of the ingredients that they needed weren't so fresh so she needed to go to the fishermen working in the island and get fresh ingredients for the seafood salad she was going to prepare.
Jayden wanted to lessen the work on her, so he decided to go with her and she didn't object to it since she needed a helping hand the most at that time.
As they walked around checking the crabs, shellfishes and other crustaceans, Jayden marvelled at how freely Ever was chatting with the fishmongers as if they were already acquainted with each other. That was one thing he liked about her, once anything concerned her work, she was able to pull it off. She had an inert ability to make people love her without trying much.
''Young lady, your husband must love you very much. He hasn't taken his eyes off you since you got here'' an old lady Ever was conversing with said and smiled as she looked between Ever and Jayden.
''Huh? No, he is not…''
''Granny, you have good intuition, I will pay for everything she is buying'' Jayden interrupted Ever and went forth, he took the polybag from the old woman and started putting the crustaceans Ever purchased into it leaving her speechless. Afterwards, he removed some bills and passed on to the woman before taking Ever's hand and walking away to the next stall as he asked.
''What else do we need?''
''Huh?''
''Is that everything you need?''
''Yes, it's left with the vegetables''
'Let's go and get those too'' he said matching forward with the bag in his hands.
...
''Done'' Ever said and rang the bell for the waiters to come and take over. The two kitchen staff that were watching her do the garnishing clapped their hands cheering her on.
''Miss Ever, you've worked hard''
''You all have worked hard too. Let's clean up here and get some rest'' Ever said to the two staff. She was glad they were there to help her through with the work, she admitted it would have been very difficult for her if she were to do it all by herself.
''Miss Ever, leave this to us and get some rest. You worked hard since morning till now'' one of the staff said to Ever.
''No, we all worked hard. I am glad I had you two to rely on. More hands get the work done faster, so let's clean up the kitchen together and then, I will treat you two to a meal. What do you say?''
Looking back at each with smiles, the two men nodded their heads excitedly.
''Miss Ever is beautiful and kind'' one said and a voice joined them at the door.
''That is true'' Ann said walking into the kitchen with a bag of energy drinks, ''hi everyone. You've worked so hard; the government officials only have praises for the deserts they are enjoying. Here, I brought H- energy drinks from the city for everyone to energise themselves'' she said and handed over the drinks one at a time to the staff including Ever.
''You are…?'' having never seen her before, one of the staff asked.
''Oh, look at me. I forgot to introduce myself. I am Ann, the personal assistant of the CEO, Jayden Saint'' Ann introduced herself and shook the hands of the two staff members.
''So, you are the assistant. No wonder, when I saw you coming here, I was wondering where such a beauty came from. The CEO really has eyes for good things. Thank you for the
''You are welcome'' Ann said shyly and turned to Ever, ''I heard you mentioning going to eat after here. Jayden asked me to invite you all to a meal''
''The CEO wants to have a meal with us?'' one of the men asked excitedly. All that while, Ever was quietly watching Ann.
''Yes, when I came in earlier, none of you saw me because you were all so busy with work. So, when I got back, I informed the CEO about your hard work and he felt bad that he couldn't be of help. I suggested having a meal after everything and he agreed to it, so I came to invite you, but I didn't know Miss Ever was also going to treat you to a meal. Miss Ever, you don't mind that the CEO is stealing the limelight, right?'' Ann asked looking at Ever whose face still remained expressionless.
"Why would I mind? If the CEO is treating, wouldn't I be saving money then? You two have worked hard, it's a rare chance that the CEO is treating us to a meal. Let's take a rain check on my treat and use this opportunity to have a chat with the CEO'' Ever said with a smile.
''Yes, I always knew Miss Ever was a reasonable person'' Ann said, 'then, everyone can get ready and meet us outside. We will be going to a food joint operated by a family with 60 years of history in seafood'' Ann said and smiled before going out.
''Everyone, let's hurry up'' Ever said to the two men and they started cleaning up the work area. Ann stood at the door for a while before going out. Ever turned and looked at her back view with a complicated gaze. She didn't know why but for some reason, she couldn't help been hostile towards her. she was a typical white lotus who was also good at her work but it didn't make her feel alright especially someone with a low self-esteem like Ever, she was particular wary of women like Ann. She had pretended as if she didn't know her the first day they met at the hotel but Ever could never forget that face especially after seeing her in Jayden's shirt that night.
Thinking about that night, Ever felt a big lump on her throat and her eyes turned icy cold. She looked at herself and subconsciously started comparing herself with Ann, a bad habit she had developed after always been mocked by her classmates for having a thick and too curvy body which wasn't typical of a lot of women in D-City.
''Miss Ever, are you alright?'' one of the men asked her after noticing she had paced out.
''Yes, I'm sorry'' Ever looked at them apologetically. They had finished the work during the time she had paced out.
''Let's go, Miss Ever''
''Yes''
