When Jenny walked out of the restaurant holding a bag of garbage to dispose of, she saw Kody standing by a brand new Bentley. It seemed he had been waiting for her.
''You are here?'' Jenny asked him as he took the bags from her, walking to the big bin to put the bags inside.
''En, are you done for the day?''
''Yes, I just handed over to Kristine and now ready to go home. is that car yours?''
''Yes, I just bought it and came to take you out for a spin''
''Then, I will quickly change out of this and get my bag''
''Sure, take your time. I'm not in a hurry'' Kody said and Jenny chuckled before going inside to get her stuff.
Last night, she had thought about it and decided to end her friendship with Kody for good. She had weighed the pros and cons of being in a relationship with him and realised that the negatives were much greater than the positives. The odds were against her and she couldn't ignore them. She didn't want her mother to be harassed anymore.
With such thoughts, Jenny believed she could be able to convince Kody and make him understand the situation they were in. It didn't matter whether they had feelings for each other or not. They were two people who couldn't be together.
When she came went inside, Kristine hugged her saying, ''are you sure this would work? Kody can be a lot difficult to handle''
''It has to work or I will just tell him I will run away if he doesn't stop looking for me'' Jenny said and Kristine laughed.
''Call me when you are done. I can be your drinking buddy''
''I could always use a drinking buddy'' when Jenny left the restaurant, Kristine took our phone and made a call.
''They just left. I hope this is a good idea. Jenny would kill us if this backfire on us''
''Stop been a scare bee. This is going to work, trust me'' Brenda said over the phone.
''Kris, hurry, we are almost at your place'' Chloe said.
''Okay''
Jenny went out and Kody opened the door for her and she got in and he drove away. The drive was silent with soft music playing in the background.
Jenny looked at the road they were taking and was confused for a bit, ''Kody, where are we going?''
''You will find out when we get there'' he didn't say anything anymore and kept driving.
Jenny frowned the more she looked at the road they were taking and looked at him, ''Kody stop the car, we need to talk''
''What do you want to talk about?'' Kody asked as he drove.
''About last night. I thought about this the whole night and I hope that you will understand me''
''Okay, I'm listening'' Kody nodded his head.
''We can't be together. First, you are younger than me. I only see you as my younger brother. We grew up together and have known each other for a long time, it is absolutely normal to mistaken our feelings as love. But, what is love? It is all about emotions, right? At the height of something, emotions can be deceptive. Sometimes you mistaken the affections a friend gives us as love, but it is wrong. What happened between us last night was because we acted on the heat of the moment. We haven't seen each other for so long, so it was normal for us to act that way''
Kody kept nodding his head without replying to her as she spoke. Jenny paused and asked him, ''are you listening to me?''
''Off course, I am. Do you have more to say or it's that all?''
''Huh? Well, I don't exactly have more to say but all what I'm trying to make you understand is that, we can't be together. You and I are polar opposites. You work with models, I'm sure you've seen a lot of women who are prettier than I am. You wouldn't lack women, no, you do not lack women, so why would you want to settle for an old woman like me? You are so handsome, and I am just an old woman, right? I am also a waiter, nothing to call home about''
Kody's lips curved into a smile as she listened to the woman beside him. She was trying so much to demean herself and give him reasons why they couldn't be together.
''Kody, where are we going?''
Kody pulled over in front of a tall building. He turned to look at her saying, 'drink some water first. You must be thirsty from all the talking''
''Huh?'' Jenny looked at his hands and saw he was holding a bottle of water. She realised her throat was dry and took the water and sipped before saying to him, ''do you see the reasons why we can't be together?''
''En, I've heard all your reasons. You said I was younger than you and that we are more like siblings. You also said I didn't lack women. Those were your reasons, right?''
''Mm, that's right'' Jenny nodded her head.
''Okay, now it's time to listen to me and I'm going to say this once. First, you are just two years older than me, I don't see any difference in that at all. Two, you and I are not siblings. You are not my blood or relative. Three, I don't lack women but you are the only one I see as a woman. Even if you line up all the models and beautiful women in the world in front of me, I still wouldn't see them as women because there is only one person who makes me feel things I can't feel for another one else. Four, I know about my mother harassing you and your mother. I cut off all ties with her and the entire family that year when my elder cousin did what he did to Brenda. A family full of people who only lie, cheat and betray and hurt people to achieve their aim, I don't want to be a part of. I am using my paternal grandfather's last name now and he is waiting for us inside with your mother and your best friends''
'Huh?' Jenny turned and saw that the place he had pulled over was the city's bureau building where people registered their marriages at. she turned back to face him with a shocked expression, 'Kody, are you crazy? What are we doing here?''
''Why don't you get down first? Your mother wants to see you'' Kody got down and went to the other side and opened the door for her, ''do you want to get out or do I have to carry you out?''
''No, no need to carry me out. I can get out myself'' Jenny hurriedly got down and followed him inside. When they arrived at the waiting area, she saw her three friends, her mother and Kody's grandfather along with Collins, Ronald and Robyn.
''Mom, what are you doing here?'' Jenny went and hugged her mother before she bowed in front of Kody's grandfather.
''Child, how are you doing?'' her mother asked. She was in her early fifties but because of their financial issues, she looked much older than her age.
''Kris, Chloe, Brenda, what's happening here?'' she asked her friends.
''Jenny, we are sorry that we didn't tell you earlier. This morning…'' Chloe started to explain the situation to her.
When Chloe woke up in the morning, she saw a lot of missed calls form Kody and decided to call back and he requested to meet them. Kris stayed back to avoid suspicion while Chloe and Brenda went to meet him. When they did, Kody asked for their help and expressed his seriousness in pursuing Jenny.
At first Chloe and Brenda didn't accept to his request but after he told them he knew about the fact that his mother had harassed Jenny's mother before, they also decided to open up and tell him about the concerns that Jenny had. It was then decided that as long as he was sure he had cut off his relationship with his mother's side of the family, then they were willing to support their relationship.
After discussing with them, Kody went with his grandfather to meet up with Jenny's mother and after getting her permission, they came together with Jenny's family register which was needed for their marriage certificate. It was a long process but Kody felt it was worth it as long as he could give Jenny the security that she needed to feel safe and be able to trust him.
Thus, their current state.
After listening to everyone's explanation, Jenny felt her eyes swell up as she turned to face Kody. She couldn't believe he had done all that just to be with her. it warmed her heart that he was willing to do everything in order to be with her.
''Jenny, my grandfather is here as my family and you have your mother and sisters here. We also have Ronald, Robyn and Collins whom we all met last night with us. If you agree, we can get our marriage certificate here right away''
