Ch: 6 [Nick Fury]
After gathering the courage, I sat down with my family and opened up about everything. It felt like a weight had been lifted off my chest, that sense of relief you experience when you finally confess to your wrongdoings. I could tell they were feeling down, and I knew they might blame me—and rightfully so—for the mess I had created.
To be honest, despite everything, I couldn't deny the fact that I still loved her deeply. It's difficult to erase someone from your heart, especially when you've loved them with all your being. Even though I had spoken of revenge, a part of me couldn't let go so easily. The ones who betray you after receiving your love tend to linger in your thoughts.
But my time for sorrow and self-destructive behavior was over. I had made a decision—I would find her, strip her of everything, and publicly humiliate her. Then, I would ask her a simple question: "Alica, how does it feel to stand on the other end of the dagger?"
However, I won't bore you any longer with my broken love story. It's a tale as old as time in this flawed world we live in. Let's return to my family's reaction.
As I finished explaining everything, my mother and sister sat silently, their faces reflecting a mixture of sadness and disappointment. I braced myself for their anger and the verbal lashing I expected to receive.
But my mother's response surprised me.
She stood up from her seat, and I couldn't bring myself to meet her gaze, my eyes fixed on the ground. My heart pounded heavily in my chest, my hands sweating and trembling. I was terrified to hear her reply. She walked towards me and knelt down, taking hold of my trembling hands. And then, she asked me, "Are you okay?"
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. After everything I had just confessed, after the disappointment I had brought upon them, she was asking about my well-being. I expected anger, reprimands, or even a cold silence. But there was no trace of anger in her voice.
I looked up at her, tears welling in my eyes, and whispered, "Mom, I'm so sorry..."
Instead of scolding me, she pulled me into a warm embrace, holding me tightly. Her voice filled with compassion and love as she said, "Alex, we understand... We're here for you, no matter what. We'll get through this together."
In that moment, I felt a surge of gratitude and relief. I realized that no matter the mistakes I had made, my family's love and support remained unwavering. And that was a precious gift that I would cherish forever.
"I'm sorry... I'm really sorry..." I muttered, overwhelmed with shame. I had been so wrong to anticipate her anger and curses. Instead, she expressed concern for me. I struggled to hold back my tears, my emotions running high.
Getting involved in this kind of situation was never a good idea. However, since Natasha had aided me earlier, it seemed only fair to extend a helping hand to her. Still, agreeing too easily would make me appear weak.
"Well, why should I help? Wasn't it you who considered me and the others caught in that Red Hulk incident as collateral damage?" I reminded him, recalling past events.
Oh, Fury, I have no fear of you. I could easily dismantle you without even lifting a finger. I observed a few female and male officials surrounding the area, creating a kind of lockdown.
"Cat Woman has been poisoned, and her condition is critical... Her chances of survival are less than 10%. Black Widow has also been poisoned, and even her genetically enhanced body is unable to fight it off... It's a completely new poison without any known cure... Before losing consciousness, she asked me to seek your help," Nick Fury explained, maintaining his usual tone without addressing my question.
I didn't like the expression on his face or the way he spoke, as if he had no concerns. But then again, he had come here seeking help.
Although Natasha had bestowed expensive gifts upon me, I couldn't help but feel she had ulterior motives, seeking to exploit the secret behind my powers for her own gain. I had already been deceived by a woman once, and I wasn't about to fall for it again.
Furthermore, I possessed no medical abilities, and I wasn't sure how I could assist them. But if there was a way for me to help, I certainly wouldn't do it for free. I would extract their wealth and add it to my bank account.
Collateral damage, huh? Those bastards...
...
"I believe you didn't quite grasp my question... I asked... Why should I help?" I responded, maintaining my cool demeanor.
A flicker of unease flashed in Nick Fury's remaining eye. He seemed taken aback, and I could see beads of sweat forming on his forehead. Hmmm... Now that I think about it, I remember a rumor from a few years ago that suggested Nick Fury himself was an awakened individual.
