Lu Weixi looked up and saw a man in a white casual suit with his warm smile peeking out from behind gold-rimmed glasses. It was Zhao Zihao.
Since work had been less busy recently, Lu Weixi had been frequently visiting her mother in the hospital. Maybe because of the awkwardness from the previous encounters, she deliberately timed her visits to coincide when Zhao Zihao was off-duty. But she never imagined running into him again in such an awkward situation.
Zhao Zihao saw her awkward smile and noticed her car parked haphazardly at the gate. He saw warning signs around it, “Is your car broken down?”
Lu Weixi nodded and without any further hesitation sought his help: “It won’t start.”
Zhao Zihao chuckled lightly, “Don’t worry, let me take a look.” He opened up the hood like a pro, checked the wiring, borrowed a cleaning agent from her, cleaned the fuel injectors and added some to the fuel tank.
“Done, try starting it now.”
Lu Weixi hurried back and tried. True to his words, it was effective. She parked the car on the curb. Observing his hands smeared with grime, she promptly (and apologetically) handed him tissues and wet wipes: “Doctor Zhao, I can’t thank you enough for helping me, and even getting your hands dirty.”
“It’s all right. The air intake was just dirty, I cleaned it a bit; but you should still get it thoroughly cleaned.” Zhao Zihao smiled, not bothered in the least, “When I was abroad, I used to drive a lot. And you know how labor is expensive there, so I ended up fixing minor issues myself.”
Seeing him get off the taxi, Lu Weixi inquired: “Are you here at N University for something?”
Zhao Zihao nodded, “Yeah, one of my college roommates works here, so I thought I’d pay him a visit. But N University is so huge, I’m not sure if I’ll be able to find where he lives.”
After hearing this, how could Lu Weixi just abandon him to his fate? “I graduated from N University. Let me help you.”
Zhao Zihao smiled warmly, “Great. Thank you.”
As vehicles aren’t allowed inside the university premises, she parked the car in the parking lot and walked with Zhao Zihao to his destination. Throughout the walk they spoke about her mother’s ailment—methods of treatment, care, precautions, but nothing personal. After about half an hour they finally reached the faculty dormitory where Zhao Zihao’s friend resided. Lu Weixi walked with him up to the entrance, “Dr. Zhao, this is the place.”
Zhao Zihao, with a beaming grin, thanked her and rang the bell. When no one answered even after a few minutes, he made a call. Lu Weixi could only catch bits of the conversation: “So, you’re on an unexpected shift? Which issue is causing such hassle? When will you be back?”
After the call ended, he looked at Lu Weixi with an awkward smile. He had been stood up.
Just as Lu Weixi was about to offer him a ride back, Zhao Zihao chimed in: “I’m a bit hungry. As a token of my gratitude for bringing me here, how about I treat you to dinner?”
“Oh, I couldn’t. Besides, you’ve helped me twice and I still owe you a meal. And since we’re in my alma mater, any treating should be on me.” Lu Weixi thought of the meal she owed him from last time and decided to settle the debt once and for all.
Seeing her insistence, Zhao Zihao didn’t decline. So, Lu Weixi took him to a high-end restaurant on N University campus where they could pay in cash. As soon as they had ordered their food in the main hall, they sensed something was off.
Looking up, on the second floor balcony, Qin Zhiyou was casually leaning against the railing with his indifferent gaze fixed on her!
