Chapter 20: Alone In The Classroom
The weather on this day was mostly cloudy and sometimes clear.
According to the forecast, a typhoon was approaching from far away and may or may not hit us this weekend.
During lunch break, the sunshine was pouring down brilliantly from between the clouds, but the wind was very strong, and the clouds moved very fast.
Today, Yuuki had been watching the clouds absentmindedly from the window during recess between classes or during busy classes. But he got tired of it.
“Hey, you know what?”
“What?”
Unlike Yuuki, his neighbor, Yui, was popular in class, and there were times when a few girls came over.
Usually, during lunch break, Yui usually moved to another seat, but I wondered if something happened today, since they gathered at Yui’s seat.
Only Keitaro and Sonoda would talk to Yuuki in class other than Yui.
But as long as Yuuki was in his seat and Yui was next to him, they basically didn’t mess with him.
Lunch was over and we finally have some time to kill.
On the other hand, the chatter next to me showed no sign of settling down.
At this time, I couldn’t concentrate on reading a book, and I thought about playing a game on my phone, but I became sleepy and gave up.
“Ehh, well, that’s right.”
“Isn’t that bad?”
As usual, the conversation next to me and nothing to do with me, so I pretended to sleep with my face down for now. No, I’m going to sleep.
The problem right now is that you can accidentally fall into a sound sleep.
I completely forgot that the next class was in another classroom, and when I woke up there was no one in the classroom. I almost seriously panicked for a second.
“Ehhh~… but Yui is always close to the boy next to her~.”
One person had a very loud voice and passed by.
Just because I kept my face down doesn’t mean I couldn’t hear the conversation.
My music player had been left to charge at home.
“That’s it. You have to get along with your neighbors.”
“It’s really tough for me, since Sonoda sits next to me. I’m amazed that I was able to endure it so well.”
“Sonoda-kun could help you with your studies if you asked, so that’s good.”
“No, no, I couldn’t. I don’t want to be taught by him. He’s so stubborn about everything.”
[T/N: Poor Sonoda.]
The names of people I knew came up so I couldn’t help but listen to the conversation.
Or rather, the conversation came into my ears on their own.
“You often say that he’s at the top of the class, but last semester wasn’t he in 5th place? Somewhere around there.”
“Oh yeah. He folded his arms in front of the results and mumbled to himself, ‘Ahh.. I see.'”
Hahahaha, and laughter broke out.
(Sonoda-kun is so popular), Yuuki thought, when the tone of the conversation next to him suddenly dropped.
“…Hey, hey, are you sleeping?”
“I think he’s asleep. What’s he doing?”
“I’m not sure, I’ve never talked to him.”
“Eh… something cool?”
“I see it all the time with Hayami, but it doesn’t fit at all.”
“Oh, he doesn’t seem to have friends with him. He’s super quiet when he’s alone.”
“Seriously? That’s funny.”
A whispering voice, a faint chuckle, and a sneaky laugh could be heard.
In between, I heard Yui’s voice in it’s usual tone.
“Hmmm, he’s more of a cool or ghoul type of guy. He kinda spaces out.”
“…What is that? Are you okay?”
“Well, he’s a bit odd.”
“Heeeh~. What’s with you saying ‘I know him’?”
“No, no! I’m just stating an objective fact.”
“Heh, that’s pretty objective, huh? I’m watching you closely – fyu fyu fyu.”
“No, no!”
Apparently it got excited.
On the other hand, Yuuki wondered what it meant to be a ghoul… but he finally reached his limit.
The voices around me stopped, and my consciousness fell into silence.

I raised my face.
The desks and chairs that were empty came into my view.
Not a single noise could be heard around him, let alone the bustle of recess.
(Ah, fifth period is science class.)
I’ve done it again.
Just as I had a gut feeling that I had done it again, I heard someone right next to me.
“Oh, you’re up.”
When I glanced over in the voice’s direction, I saw Yui sitting at her desk with her cheek on her desk, staring at me.
As soon as our eyes met, she smiled at me and said, “We’re going to be late for class.”
“If we’re going to be late, let’s go?” (Yui)
There was something about being half asleep, and I couldn’t help but stare blankly for a moment.
Yui turned straight toward me, and then began to laugh.
“Kusukusu~, what’s wrong with your face? Are you surprised? I waited for you, Yuuki-kun.”
“Uh… yeah.”
“Yes, that’s right. Oh, my goodness. Is it possible that Yuuki-kun’s heart is pounding…”
“Thanks.”
It was very reassuring to have one person left.
When I told her this honestly, Yui’s smile faltered.
“Oh, uh…”
“Huh?”
“You looked cute in your sleep.”
“No, I was sleeping with my face down, so you shouldn’t half seen it.”
“Ugh. You were looking up.”
“What kind of sleeping arrangements are you afraid of, lying face up on your stomach?”
Since she was just going to give me mysterious blurbs one after another, I’ll just stick with one.
And then, as if something had bothered her, Yui suddenly turned her head away and,
“Unfortunately for you – I really just forgot my pencil case and came to get it~.”
Apparently it’s not like she was waiting for me to wake up.
“That’s good enough for me. You don’t know what it’s like to be alone in fear.”
“What?”
Apparently, it’s something that Yui has never experienced before.
When Yui stood up with a disrespectful expression,
“Oh, we’re alone in the classroom right now.”
She said that while leaning against her desk.
“So what?”
“Hmm… for example, like this…”
Yui bent down and moved her face closer to where Yuuki was sitting.
“We’ve been staring at each other.”
Clear eyes, a smooth nose, and a slightly round face.
Each part is neatly organized.
Of these, Yuuki was focused on Yui’s eyes.
“I just thought… Yui looks a bit like my sister.”
“Huh?”
Perhaps it was an unexpected reply, but after hearing that, Yui froze in place.
But immediately, she smiled in a hurry and,
“Heh, heh~… what’s your sister like? Is she cute?”
“Yeah, she’s cute.”
When I answered smoothly, Yui said, “Eh?” and made a gesture as if to ask back.
“What?”
“Nothing, I’m just a little surprised you answered so quickly.”
“Why?”
“Well, I thought that’s the kind of thing you’d normally deny…”
“I’m just being honest.”
Yui nodded vigorously with an ambiguous expression, “Fufufu…”
However, as if she got an idea, she suddenly loosened her mouth with a grin and said,
“No, but your little sister is cute, and if she resembles me…”
“What do you mean?”
When I asked with a straight face, she silently averted his gaze, so I said what I thought further.
“And I feel like you’re somewhat similar on the inside, too.”
“What, eh? You act like my sister… Yuuki-kun, what month were you born?”
“Eh? December.”
“Un, I’m in August. Sister~ overwhelming older sister~.”
Yui stretched back slightly, put her hands on her hips, and puffed out her chest.
For a moment, it didn’t make sense, but then I realized it was an appeal to be born earlier.
“Are you in elementary school?”
“Hmmm? Do you want me to be your big sister? Yuuki-kun?”
“Fuu.”
“Don’t laugh!”
At that time, the chime sounded to announce the start of class.
Then, Yui quickly looked back at the clock.
“Ah, the bell rang! If we get in trouble, it’s because of Yuuki-kun!”
“Eh, why?”
“Come on, let’s go.”
As Yuuki was sluggishly taking out textbooks, Yui stomped her feet and said, “Hurry up, hurry up!” as she pestered me.
The first thing to do was to follow the little runner, and Yuuki left the classroom.
