Chapter 1

The teacher pointed at me and I put my hand down. "Miss Randall, would the bolt be more powerful if the spell shield was convex instead of flat?" I asked, braving the eyes of my classmates and the possibility of being laughed at.

Ikasa, my teacher in runic studies, pushed some of her hair out of her face and looked over the circle she had projected with her magic with half lidded eyes. Nobody was sure if she always looked sultry on purpose or was just tired all the time.

"We haven't covered third dimensional runic circles yet but yes, that would be slightly more powerful for this variant of magic missile. Don't use a concave shield with multi-missile variants, use a convex shield instead. And third dimensional rune complexes are a third year topic, Garret."

"Oh, right, sorry." I ignored the fact that we used concave and convex spell shields in a lot of our spells. We learned firebolt a few weeks ago and had convex spell shields then, and we'd had multi-magic missiles since the start of the year that practically relied on concave shielding.

Not to say that my classmates had bothered to learn the theory behind why you needed different shielding…

I already knew the topic of today's lesson, a bunch of properties of the secondary ring in runic circles. It was important but it was so, so basic, or maybe I was advanced. With a glance around me at the glassy stares of students I considered that it was both. We'd probably have the same lesson pounded into our heads through reviews and homework for the next few weeks.

At least the class time was good for my journal work and brainstorming. Ikasa was a genius in runework and sometimes she'd ramble off into a tangent that I only half understood, which was more than most could say. I'd seen her make an eight layered runic circle at the beginning of my first year, a shielding spell that encased the whole of the city for almost two hours to hold off the latest orc raid. It was incredible to see and one of the feats that put her firmly in the realm of legends.

Well, she fainted after performing the spell and she'd had hours of prep work beforehand but it was still amazing! For every level of a runic circle it was half again as large as the last circle and another image you needed to hold in your mind with crystal clear focus. I could do first and second circle spells and a few thirds, enough to make me a professional mage but not enough to satisfy my ambition or make me stand out in any real setting.

Well, that I was only eighteen and capable of third circle spells would make me stand out like a dragon in a wheat field if people knew about it but for now only the faculty knew that I could do third circle spells. Everyone else thought I was just above average, which was just the way I liked it.

It would be a pain in the ass if I had any obstacles to learning magic, after all.

****************

When I was reborn in Elle, the name of the world, I was a little pissed at first. Things had been going well for me, I had finally gotten that promotion at my job at the library, I had my rent paid off for the next three months, and I was even thinking about taking a vacation, though obviously I'd be staying at home reading or going on a hike instead of taking a flight to some tourist trap.

Then I just woke up in Elle and had to do all that childhood shit again, and it was only slightly less crappy the second time around.

It could have been worse, sure, but it wasn't fun. My parents were the closest thing to middle class there was in the pseudo-medieval society, my father being a servant at the local merchant's guild and my mother running a maid's company that serviced a few minor noble houses.

I had two older brothers, Rich and Hammond, that were fine following mom's and dad's footsteps, the business going to Rich, being the oldest, and I… got almost nothing. I had to go through what amounted to primary school all over again, thankfully for only a few hours a day instead of eight or so like on Earth, but since I already knew everything I just had to re-learn the numeral system and take some extra language lessons.

But wait! There it was, my light at the end of the tunnel!

Magic.

Yes! There was MAGIC in the world! Fireballs, curses, charms, enchantments, spirits, elves, and a hundred other MAGICAL things to learn about and explore!

MMMMMAAAAAAAGGGIIICCC!!!

I, being the nerd that I was, begged, bought, and a few times even stole as much knowledge as I could on magic as a whole, eagerly learning how to read at an average a.d.u.l.t's level around my fifth birthday, which freaked out my parents a little but who cared? MAGIC!

… And it was f.u.c.k.i.n.g p.o.r.n magic.

I wasn't in some fantasy world, so sir, I was in a bonafide hentai world. Those elves? Big tiddy elves. The orcs? Their throbbing shafts pulsed at the thought of… pretty much everything. They were just like that. And Magic?

Did you know that getting your d.i.c.k sucked while you casted a spell made a sizable increase to your spell's power because of the mana channels blah blah aether connections blah blah f.u.c.k you, f.u.c.k a bitch, get magic. Good gods, the first magical technique apprentices learned was a technique to make your magic vibrate in a finger or, at more advanced levels, multiple fingers. Any mage worth their salt could vibrate their fingers, toes, any body part really, at will. Because they can.

It had rules to it, sure, rules that, when you took a step back and squinted, kinda looked sensible, as much as magic could be sensible, but it just wasn't. Magic was an art, it was manipulating reality through arcane power, will, and skill, but instead it was sort of… corrupted.

Plenty of people would be leaping in cheer, crying tears of joy, even, at the ability to bang so many hot hentai characters, but I didn't really care. Yeah, s.e.x was cool but have you ever shot a bolt of lightning from your hand before you teleported to your flying tower? That was my kink, second only to dragon girls, and I wanted to do it the right way, the wizard way, but I apparently needed to get my d.i.c.k out if I wanted to get anywhere near that fantasy.

It was around that time, at five years old, that I made my decision. My old life was gone, it had taken a few years to resign myself to that. I was the third son of some nobodies and I knew full well that I would be eaten alive in the military - I was one of the least disciplined people I knew. But magic? Magic I could do. I was going to - NEEDED TO - become a mage, perverse or not.

But if I was doing magic I would do it right. I was an a.d.u.l.t for goodness' sake, I wasn't going to go play in a sandbox when I could be learning how to throw a fireball or teleport. I was going to be at least a good mage, if not the greatest mage I could be.

My first step? I learned what I was dealing with, what kind of magic was best for me and how could I practice it? And from there I just had to learn it.

****************

"Garret, Tinami" Ikasa said, snapping my eyes from my journal. "Stay after class." The men in class glared at me, getting private time with one of the hottest women at the mage academy. What, did they think that I was going to bang them both or something? I was hardly the best looking guy in class, though I was at least a little muscled so I could avoid the fat bastard lifestyle and prepare for life as an adventurer. Ikasa probably wanted me to tutor her or something. I'd been asked twice, though never by a teacher, and I politely declined both times.

"Alright." I answered her, shrugging and returning to my journal. I was trying, very unsuccessfully, to make new spells. I had half a dozen improvements to the ones I already knew, though, and re-reading my entries was good for my memory.

"Okay." Tinami said cheerfully.

She was one of the commoner students, like me. I was pretty sure that she wanted to be a shaman, a rarity in the human kingdoms. She was also one of the more popular students because of her attitude towards… well, everything.

The students filed out, a few taking their sweet time to chat on their way out. Tinami was drawing something, her tongue sticking out of her lips like a derpy puppy, and Ikasa staring into her desk. Eventually, when we were the only ones left, Tinami stuffed her drawing into her pocket and walked down to some chairs by Ikasa's cluttered desk. I dropped my things into my satchel, something every student used to carry their papers and enchanted quills (inkwells not needed) and walked down to join them.

"So what's this about?" Tinami smiled. If she didn't know then maybe this wasn't a tutoring talk.

"It's about your recent acquisition, ah, what did you name her?"

"You mean Levant?" Tinami's smile grew brighter. Did she get a pet or something? Wait, she wanted to be a shaman. Did she get a spirit to bond with somehow?

"Yes, her. Would you bring her out, please?"

"Sure!" Tinami closed her eyes and I focused on my magical senses. I got a vague sense of lightness from her, aside from the normal bubbly feeling. The two feelings separated and I saw a pale woman coalesce from white smoke that appeared out of nowhere beside Tinami.

She managed to find an air spirit? Did she take a hike into the woods when nobody was looking or did she somehow find her just lying around somewhere? Though judging by how the magic of the spirit, Levant, felt, she was pretty weak. Stronger air spirits, I'd heard, felt more like the air before a storm, or in the genuinely strong cases, like the cutting winds of a storm. I'd only read about it, though. Magical senses tended to be subjective.

"A pleasure to meet you, Levant." Ikasa nodded respectfully.

"The same." The spirit spoke, her voice sounding a little faint.

"I've asked for you three because of a question Garret asked two weeks ago, whether he could get tutoring in wild magic," Tinami and Levant stared at me for a moment before Ikasa spoke again, leaning back in her chair. "The academy doesn't teach that course so he'd need an apprenticeship, as I told him, or he'd need to trawl through the library for more information. I asked Elma to find a few tomes on the subject but the academy doesn't have anything substantial, nothing good enough to teach the subject in anything other than the academics of the subject."

I raised an eyebrow. Ikasa did that for me? Elma was an old bitch to the students and hard to deal with on a good day, though she was a hell of a librarian. I'd never seen a speck of dust on any of the books and torn pages were a rarity. That Ikasa actually tried to help without me asking her… she must like me more than I'd thought.

"When I heard that you found Levant I thought that you might be able to help him get a foothold in the subject. I know that he can teach himself well enough. In exchange he can tutor you in runes. I know you need help with the effect portions of your circles."

"Well… yeah, I know a little wild magic, I learned it from my mom, but my schedule's a little full." Tinami didn't immediately jump at helping me, which was fair enough. I hadn't made the slightest effort to get to know her or anyone else in the school, really, besides Alex and Grim. We'd shared maybe four sentences in the year and a half of shared classes.

"Garret has several third circle spells under his belt, which he can perform flawlessly." Well geez, thanks for the privacy, Ikasa.

"What?!" Tinami looked at me with wide eyes. I could feel the grimace creep onto my face.

"I'm ahead of the curve. Lots of mages can do third circle spells."

"Well yeah, but none in our class," Tinami rolled her eyes. "Why the heck aren't you bragging to every person who will listen? Goddess knows that June was smug for weeks about getting that calming spell down a few weeks ago and what do you mean flawlessly?!" She turned to Ikasa.

"She means that I can do it without mana waste." I said to Tinami, dragging her attention back to me.

"Goddess…" She muttered. Then her eyes widened and the smile blasted into existence, probably blinding me a little in the process. "Sure I'll help you learn wild magic! But you've gotta teach me a third circle spell! And you're gonna help me do a second spell flawlessly!"

I thought about that for a second. Third circle spells weren't just laying around somewhere. Mages passed on spells to their apprentices only and typically tried to keep them private. The better known a spell was the easier it was to devise a counterspell, after all, and the academy only had first and second tier spells, and none of the really 'fun' ones, namely the s.e.x spells. "I'll teach you a third circle spell and help you with as many spells as you can learn while you teach me wildmagic."

"Deal!"

"And you'll keep quiet about my casting ability."

"Why?" She asked immediately, her smile never fading.

"If I made people jealous it would get in the way of my learning and people would pester me to teach them or try to be my friend to get whatever 'secret' I have. Besides, I don't want the attention."

"So it's not because of a dark family secret that you'll have to swear me to secrecy to know?" She teased playfully leaning in closer. I glanced up at the ceiling and wondered if I could summon a demon to teach me wild magic instead. It wasn't illegal to summon demons if you had a license and instructor Rotgut in combat studies would be happy to recommend me…

No, better to endure the teasing for a few weeks. Besides, demons extorted the hell out of mages to teach them magic.

Tinami giggled at my silent suffering. "Looks like you two have this worked out," Ikasa said, sounding satisfied. She stood up and started walking out of the classroom. "Let me know how your arrangement works later. I'll see you on friday." She left the room and I turned to come face to face with Tinami, her eyes sparkling, Levant peeking over her shoulder.

"Wanna get started right now?"

"… Fine."
