Chapter 221: Two noble houses against each other? Damien v Dravena

As the chaos raged outside, Rose escorted Dumfries into Damien's chamber, ensuring he was safe from the turmoil unfolding in the vampire city. Once they were settled, Rose couldn't shake off her concern for Dumfries. She kept asking if he was alright, her eyes scanning him for any signs of injury or distress.

Dumfries, however, waved off her concerns with a dismissive gesture. "It's just minor injuries," he reassured her, though his voice held a hint of exhaustion. "Nothing serious. A few hours of rest, and I'll be good as new."

Despite his attempt to downplay the situation, Rose remained unconvinced. She knew firsthand the dangers lurking in the vampire city, especially during times of unrest. The fact that Dumfries had been caught in the midst of the chaos was enough to keep her on edge.

"Let me take a look," Rose insisted, her tone firm yet gentle as she approached Dumfries. She carefully examined him, checking for any hidden injuries or signs of strain. Although Dumfries protested, Rose's thorough inspection revealed a few bruises and scrapes, evidence of the scuffle he had endured.

As Rose watched Dumfries gulp down the blood, she couldn't help but feel a mix of fascination and sympathy. She understood the necessity of blood for vampires, but seeing it in action still held a certain intrigue for her. The way Dumfries's wounds began to heal faster only confirmed what she already knew about vampire physiology.

Maintaining her composed demeanor, Rose remained seated, her hands resting gracefully on her gown. Though it wasn't her finest attire, she carried herself with the same elegance and poise she displayed in any situation. Yet, despite her outward calmness, she couldn't shake the feeling of discomfort that lingered in the air.

Observing Dumfries's persistent attempts to avoid her gaze, Rose couldn't help but feel a pang of sympathy. She understood his reluctance to engage with her, given their differing social statuses and the circumstances they found themselves in. Yet, his efforts to maintain distance only served to deepen her curiosity about him.

Rose furrowed her brows slightly, her curiosity piqued by Dumfries's presence amidst the chaos of the Durello house's open area during the Dhampir attack when he wasn't even part of the noble houses. His stay was outside the castle areas so what would have him walk into where the attacks were primarily being stationed?

"Dumfries," she began, her tone gentle yet inquisitive, "what brought you here? Ordinarily, I would have expected you to be trying to get past the wall or on the outskirts of the city."

Dumfries chuckled softly, a wry smile tugging at the corners of his lips as he ran a hand through his hair. "Well, Rose, when the attack started, I... I ran to your family's castle," he admitted, his expression earnest. "I wanted to check on you, make sure you were safe." His gaze softened as he met her eyes, the sincerity in his words evident.

"But when I arrived," Dumfries continued, "the guards informed me that Damien had already come to pick you up." He paused, his features reflecting a mixture of concern and determination. "I knew then that you were in good hands, but... I couldn't shake the feeling that you might need someone by your side."

Rose felt a swell of emotion rise within her at Dumfries's words. Despite the years that had passed and the divergent paths their lives had taken, Dumfries's unwavering loyalty and concern for her touched her deeply.

Vampires hidden from the conflict and afforded the view to see what was happening were all confused.

"What in the world is happening up there?"

"I've never seen anything like this before. Why are Dravena and Damien fighting?"

"It's madness! What could have driven them to this?"

"Do you think it's some kind of power struggle between the houses?"

"I have no idea, but we'd better keep our distance. I don't want to get caught in the crossfire."

"Look at the shockwaves spreading from each blow they exchange. The true powers lords possess. It's almost like the sound of thunder!!"

"I don't like this one bit. Something tells me this isn't going to end well for any of us."

"Shouldn't we do something? Intervene somehow?"

"Have you gone mad?! Do you really want to get involved in a battle between Dravena and Damien?"

"I just hope this doesn't escalate any further. We can't afford any more chaos in the city."

Whispers spread through the crowd like wildfire, speculation rampant among those who couldn't discern the true nature of the conflict unfolding above. Clearly, none of them knew what had transpired during the initiation in the cave, nor were they aware of Dravena's pending plans for them all.
