According to the script, after Ji Qingqing’s character cried out her lines in devastation, the male lead was supposed to stare at her for 5 seconds, then call for the guards to take her out. This was followed by a long take scene where the male lead stood in the shadows in silence while the second female lead got dragged out by the guards as rain pelted on the entrance.
However when Ji Qingqing cried out those lines, Jiang Su just stared at her for a full ten seconds. She did not see any reaction from him.
“Director Zhou.” Lu Lixing who was sitting beside him prompted.
Director Zhou instantly snapped out of his daze.
“Where are the guards!”
The two guards did not dare to move, as Jiang Su had not recited his lines. Upon hearing Director Zhou’s cue, they immediately rushed forward and dragged Ji Qingqing out of the courtyard.
Ji Qingqing struggled in their grip. She didn’t even care when mud from the courtyard was splashed on her. After being thrown outside, she struggled to crawl out from the mud. Using her muddy hands, she pounded the door. The sound of her pitiful cries resounded throughout the whole courtyard.
“Cut! Pass!”
Both the artificial rain and lighting came to a stop.
It was late autumn. The filming location was rather remote. Far in the distance, there were mountains, both big and small, that peaked one after another. And the night winds that blew could make one shiver.
Ji Qingqing had acted in the rain for 10 minutes. She was drenched from head to toe and was freezing. What’s more, because she had fallen into the mud earlier, there was mud all over her and her damp hair clung to her face. The night wind blew, causing her to shiver.
Upon hearing Director Zhou say “Cut”, members of the filming crew quickly rushed forward to help her up.
“It’s fine, it’s fine, I can manage.”
Ji Qingqing sat next to Director Zhou. Shivering as she drank the ginger soup, she asked, “Director Zhou, earlier... How did I do?”
Director Zhou nodded. “Not bad.”
Hearing his reply, Ji Qingqing broke into a smile. “Then may I take a look at my performance?”
Since it was her first time acting, Ji Qingqing felt rather curious about her performance on-screen.
To be honest, she didn’t feel confident. She had no idea how she fared.
Out of the blue Director Zhou coughed. “Go change your clothes first, lest you get sick.”
After changing into a clean set of clothes in the van, Ji Qingqing headed back to the filming location to see the footage of the earlier scene.
Before playing the footage, Director Zhou said in a serious tone, “Qingqing ah, actually your performance earlier was quite good, it passed on the first take, so there’s no need to see it again.”
“Really?” Since he put it that way, Ji Qingqing started to become curious. “Then let me have a look, I also wish to know how I performed earlier.”
Director Zhou fell silent for a moment. “...Actually, the later stages of the drama all require dubbing. Reciting 1 or 2 lines incorrectly now isn’t that much of an issue, so you don’t have to take it to heart.”
Ji Qingqing looked at him questioningly.
Although Director Zhou wasn’t known in the industry for being a strict director, given his professionalism and experience, shouldn’t he reshoot the scene if the lines were said incorrectly?
But did she recite the lines wrongly earlier?
