The demon army didn't bother about fighting with Ajax and others as their main objective was to destroy the mercenary guild and only then they could fully focus on killing the humans.
That doesn't mean they were completely ignoring them. The demon servants that were close to Ajax and others were continuously fought with them while moving forward.
From the beginning, the huge demon army never stopped moving forwards. It had already travelled more than 10 minutes since the black portal had opened.
"Search quickly. We need to finish it as soon as possible," Edmond asked others to find the demon general while he was also searching for him.

Darbaudr didn't take much time to find the demon general that he had spotted earlier and immediately rushed towards him along with Edmond and Udo.
