Chapter 280: Chapter 280: Fugaku, Your Eldest Son Plans to Sacrifice His Mangekyō Sharingan
After waking up the next morning and having breakfast, Akira left his house, first heading to check on things at the Anbu.
As the head of the Anbu, he naturally had to occasionally stop by to review the recent missions and keep up with the department's overall activities.
After that, he visited Hinata in the hospital to check on her condition. Finally, Akira made his way to the Hokage office.
"Well, this is a rare sight. What brings you here?" Fugaku asked when he saw Akira arrive.
Knowing Akira's laid-back nature, Fugaku was well aware that Akira wouldn't visit the Hokage office unless there was something significant going on. And whenever he did come, it was always for an important matter that needed to be discussed.
"Sigh..." Akira looked at Fugaku, but before even starting, he let out a long, helpless sigh.
How should he approach the topic? The whole purpose of attacking the Akatsuki was, after all, to arrange for Itachi's eyes to be transplanted to Sasuke.
How exactly was he supposed to break this to Fugaku?
After all, both Itachi and Sasuke were his sons. The saying goes, "Both hands are made of flesh," meaning both sons were equally precious. But even so, traditionally, in prominent families, the eldest son often bears more responsibility and expectation, whereas in regular households, the youngest child tends to be more pampered.
As the head of the Uchiha clan, Fugaku had naturally placed a lot of hope and expectation on Itachi. So hearing that Itachi's Mangekyō sharingan was going to be transplanted to Sasuke might not be something Fugaku would take lightly.
"Is something wrong, Akira?" Fugaku asked, feeling uneasy when Akira sighed without saying anything.
It was like when you're waiting for news about a loved one in surgery, and the doctor comes out without saying a word, just sighing deeply. Who wouldn't panic?
"Nothing has happened yet," Akira said, shaking his head.n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
"If nothing has happened, then why are you sighing like that?" Fugaku replied, clearly a bit irritated by Akira's behavior.
"It's not that something has already happened, but something is about to happen," Akira corrected him.
"What's going to happen? Just stop being cryptic and tell me already!" Fugaku said, getting more serious.
"You know about the side effects of the Mangekyō Sharingan, right?" Akira began.
"Yes, I'm aware," Fugaku nodded.
As a Mangekyō Sharingan wielder himself, Fugaku was well aware of the drawbacks of the eye technique.
"Itachi's eyesight is deteriorating, and he's on the verge of going blind," Akira continued.
Fugaku's expression darkened immediately upon hearing this.
It was his eldest son they were talking about, and Itachi was only in his early twenties, at the prime of his life. But now his Mangekyō sharingan was on the brink of going blind?
For someone from the Uchiha clan, losing their vision was a tragedy beyond measure.
"Also, Itachi's physical health is deteriorating as well," Akira added.
Itachi had likely devised this plan knowing his father might object to the eye transplant. By making it part of a larger, justified operation, he ensured his father wouldn't stand in the way. "Truly, Itachi is ruthless-even to himself," Akira thought, shaking his head in admiration
for Itachi's resolve.
"So, Lord Hokage, what do you intend to do?" Akira asked, looking at Fugaku.
"This mission will show Konoha's strength and restore its confidence. As Hokage, how could I object?" Fugaku replied with a resigned shake of his head.
As Hokage, he had to think about Konoha's best interests, and so he had no grounds to oppose
the plan.
"Actually, I had another idea that I suggested to Itachi before, but he didn't seem
interested," Akira said, noticing Fugaku's conflicted emotions.
"Oh? What idea?" Fugaku's eyes lit up, as if clinging to a last shred of hope.
If anyone could resolve this situation, it would probably be Akira.
"It's simple. If two brothers exchange their Mangekyō Sharingan, wouldn't both of them
overcome the side effects?" Akira proposed again.
"That's not possible," Fugaku shook his head, dismissing the idea.
"Not possible?" Akira asked in surprise.
Theoretically, it seemed like it should work. Why wasn't it possible?
"The solution to the Mangekyō's side effects isn't just about swapping eyes. The real solution
lies in gaining an additional source of Mangekyō chakra," Fugaku explained, clarifying the essence of the Eternal Mangekyō sharingan.
"An additional source of Mangekyō chakra?" Akira's mind clicked into place, understanding
now.
No wonder the Eternal Mangekyō was so much stronger than the regular Mangekyō. It wasn't just about avoiding blindness; the Eternal Mangekyō granted an extra boost in chakra power. That explained why in the original storyline, during the Fourth Great Ninja War, Madara was able to single-handedly take on the entire Allied Shinobi Forces and dominate the Five Kage as if he were playing with children.
It wasn't just because of Madara's immense chakra reserves-it was also because the Eternal Mangekyō was far stronger than a normal Mangekyō.
Itachi had known this all along. When Akira had initially suggested the idea, Itachi had probably pretended not to understand.
"So, he even factored me into his calculations?" Akira thought, shaking his head with a wry
smile.
