“For Ji Chi?” Ji Ziming’s eyes darkened. “For your son, you can forgive that woman?”

“Not forgive, but I know that we can’t let her leave your family right now.” Pei Ge finished her chicken soup and looked at him. “Do you trust me?”

“I do.”

“Then, listen to me and don’t ask any questions.”

“Okay.”

She placed the bowl on the tabletop, and he passed her a tissue. “Are you bored here? How about I take you out for a walk?” asked the man, his eyes tender.

“Where to?” She placed the thermos flask back in place as she looked up at him. “I wanna see that child.”

“Which child?” The man frowned, unsure of which child she was talking about. He then recalled his subordinate telling him that this woman answered the phone before.

“You want to see that person’s daughter?”

“Yes, I heard that that girl has the same illness as my daughter. As a mother, I should take a look.”

“That’s the family of the person who ran you over.” His eyes widened as he stared at her. “I don’t understand why you’re doing this.”

“You said you believe me.” She gazed up at him.

“Okay. I’ll come with you.”

“En.” She raised her head and looked at the almost empty drip bottle. “Let’s go when the bottle finishes.”

“Okay.”

Ji Ziming helped her walk into the ICU with the hospital director trailing after them.

When they entered the ICU, the whole room appeared lifeless to Pei Ge. The girl’s face was pallid, as were her caretakers’.

“Where’s your mom?” she asked, her voice constricted. She did not expect the child to be in such a bad state. Back when her daughter had surgery, each moment felt like forever for her.

“My mom went out.” The girl opened her eyes to look at the trio that had walked in. Other than the director, she did not know the other two. She instinctively avoided the woman’s gaze. “You are?”

“We’re here to help you.” Pei Ge sat in the chair next to the girl. She glanced at the lunchbox on the table with the vegetables and fatty meat.

“Have you eaten yet?”

“Not yet. Mommy went out to get some water. I’m waiting for her to return before eating.”

“That’s all you’re eating?” she asked, her voice all choked up. This girl was in an even worse state than her daughter in the past.

Ji Ziming, who was standing next to her, caught her oddity and patted her on her shoulder and addressed the director coldly, “Do you treat all your ICU patients this carelessly?”

“Sir, this… I don’t really know, either. They only paid for the surgery and not for hospitalization, medicine, and meals. We’ve already agreed to postpone the deadline for payment. This is the best we can do.”

“Who are you, people?! What are you doing here?!” A woman rushed into the ward with a water bottle in hand. As she looked at the two strangers in the room, she hugged her daughter protectively. “Don’t be afraid, Niu Niu; mommy’s here now.”

“Sir, this is the child’s mother, Du Chunlan.”

The director said as he pointed at the woman, and Ji Ziming’s eyes turned cold. After a while, he said, “Don’t be afraid; we’re here to see your child.”

“Director?” The woman saw the polite way the hospital director addressed this stranger. She let go of her child and walked over. “Are you here for the payment? Please give us a few more days. My husband has gone back to our hometown to borrow money from our relatives. He’ll return with money soon, and we’ll be able to pay the bills then. Just give us a bit more time. If not, I’ll kneel down.”

After she spoke, she prepared to kneel before the director. It was bad enough that this woman took him to be the highest authority in front of Ji Ziming; if she knelt, his career would be over.

Pei Ge helped the woman up. “Madam, don’t be afraid. We’re here to check on your daughter’s condition. The hospital has decided to waive all of your daughter’s medical fees. Don’t worry; just focus on staying by your daughter’s side and getting her treated.”

“Really?” The woman grabbed her hand, her eyes shining. “Is it true? Thank you; thank you! I really don’t know what to say. Just thank you so much for saving my daughter’s life!”

She cried tears of joy and wiped them using her sleeve. “Niu Niu, quick; thank the doctors and the director.”

“Sigh… Madam, they’re not doctors.” The hospital director walked to Ji Ziming’s side. “Let me introduce: This is Master Ji, the head of this hospital’s board of directors, and this is his wife.”

Du Chunlan was stunned beyond words. From their outstanding looks, she thought that they were doctors who had gotten off work, but little did she expect that they were the top brasses of the hospitals.

“Thank you, director; thank you, madam. Thank you so much! I don’t have anything to offer; how about I kowtow to you?” She was about to kneel down before Ji Ziming again.

Pei Ge stopped her once more. Because of the force she used, she tugged on the wound in her arm. Her expression twisted slightly, and the man hurriedly helped Du Chunlan up for her when he saw this. His eyes were cold and warm. “Please get up and focus on taking care of your daughter.”

“Yes. Taking care of your child is the most important thing right now. She’s not getting enough nutrition for her needs,” said Pei Ge with a pained expression. “She’s still young and growing. Besides, she has such a serious ailment.”

“Director, the meals of this mother-child pair will be provided for by the hospital from now on. You need to supervise it personally and make sure that both are taken care of well.”

The man looked at his woman, his heart aching for her.

“Yes, sir!” The director nodded.

“Go now. Your daughter’s food isn’t nutritious enough. Hurry and bring a lunch set over.” Pei Ge pushed aside the man, who wanted to restrain her, and spoke while coming over to the girl’s side.
