“Let me tell you how the dinosaurs went extinct.”
Ji Ziming walked up and sat down in the middle of the three children, giving the ending of Zhang Manhua’s story a perfect end.
“So those dinosaurs have their roles?”
An An blinked his eyes. The wit in them made his father see him in a new light. The man had seen the same look in Bi Zheng’s eyes prior to this day. Suddenly, he felt very fortunate that all the precious things Pei Ge had brought to his life were unique in the entire world.
When Zhang Manhua and her daughter brought out breakfast, the man was still telling the three kids the story about dinosaurs. None of the tenderness was spared as the story was transformed into one where the strongest lorded over those below them in the food chain.
“Then, will the T-rex eat the stegosaurus?”
Ran Ran blinked her large eyes at her father, hoping that he would give her a perfect ending.
“Yes,” was the man’s answer after pondering on the question for a bit. He then stood up and walked to the dining table. When he turned to look at his children, he could see the look of pity on their faces.
Although Ji Chi remained silent, it was evident that the boy had the same question as his siblings. He was able to remain unmoved even after knowing what he wanted to know.
He directed a look of praise toward the boy.
“What are you smiling at?”
Once her mother returned to the three children’s side, Pei Ge offered a glass of milk to the man.
“It’s because I’m wondering how these three children became mine. They are so cute and clever.”
Her lips curled upward as she peered at the exuberant man and then at their kids.
“Are you saying that you don’t find them cute or clever in the past?”
She managed to find the loophole in his words and cocked an eyebrow. “Why? Did I guess correctly?”
Holding a fork in his right hand, Ji Ziming looked at her and said in a low voice, “I didn’t say that. I was just afraid that they had turned stupid too after following around a stupid mommy like you. Luckily, they have me now, so they are starting to become smart.”
“You!”
She felt indignant but did not dare to speak loudly. Hence, she could only take back the milk from him.
“You have no more milk!”
“Fine. Then, I’ll just drink your milk.”
He was already moving while saying this, and before she could stop him, he had already picked up the milk she had drunk two mouthfuls of and taken a big gulp.
He then lamented in praise. “It tastes pretty good.”
“You!”
She should have known that she would not win in a squabble with him. Still, she did not expect him to do this even in front of their kids and her mother.
“Fine, I give up.”
She admitted defeat willingly.
He gave her a smug look and could not help saying in a low voice, “Mhm. That’s a good girl.”
Good? Your head!
After breakfast, the two brought their children out. The man’s Rolls-Royce sped on the wide road and soon reached Joe’s hospital. Cherrie was already waiting at the entrance in her pink uniform.
“Sir, madam, you are here.”
She revealed an awkward look. The doctor had just shown her his outburst in the office. As his assistant for two years, she thought that she was already familiar with the guy’s temperament, yet when faced with Ji Ziming, the mild-tempered Joe suddenly started acting up. His patience at having to wait had run thin.
Meanwhile, sitting in his office, the doctor himself did not know what was wrong with him. He only wanted to see Ji Ziming or, more accurately, Pei Ge.
“He actually threw a tantrum?”
His dark eyes were akin to the bright sunlight in the nurse’s eyes. Everyone praised this man for exceptional. The last time he and his wife came to the hospital, she did not look at him closely enough. Now, she realized that his, aside from his looks, way of doing things or his family background, were all the best even in high society.
“Yes.”
She led the way for them while taking care of the children following behind the couple, revealing a look of surprise.
The kids of a handsome man and pretty woman were actually this beautiful, especially the little girl. She was a combination of all the good things about the couple that one would be unwilling to shift their gazes off her.
Ji Ziming had a smile on his face. The last time he had seen the doctor flare up was six years ago, when he was scolded and cursed to no end by a surgical teacher.
He had fallen asleep on the table and did not know that that professor was eccentric in the way that one could do anything in his classes except sleeping. In the professor’s words, sleeping was a waste of life. As long as one slept the minimum required for humans to survive, the rest of the time sleeping was wasteful.
In a split second, the two had a row.
Cherrie brought them to another room, which had an orange wall painted with animals and natural sceneries.
“Mommy, this room is so pretty!”
Ran Ran rushed forward and carefully touched the wall, as though she could enter the painting by doing so.
“Are you guys finally here?”
Joe’s nurse knocked on his door. He opened it while dressed in an orange sportswear. He spotted Pei Ge first before turning his head to look at the man and their son.
“We’re here.”
Ji Ziming’s voice was neutral, making one unable to see through his emotions.
“Come in. Children, this uncle here has a lot of fun things for you.”
Joe pushed open the door. All the medical equipment inside was pasted with cartoons kids loved, especially the green dinosaur. As a result of the stories told by their grandmother and father this morning, the three were highly interested in dinosaurs. Hence, they all quickly ran forward to look at the simple dinosaur trivia.
“Are you going to let them treat your equipment as toys?”
The man raised an eyebrow. He had to admit that this doctor did a good job at taking care of children.
“Nothing to worry about. I’ll just buy a new one if it spoils at most. The old man was so rich and left so much inheritance that I couldn’t spend it all in my whole life. Do I need to be afraid of replacing some equipment?”
Joe’s eyes flashed with a light as he sized up Pei Ge, who was beside his friend, from the corner of his eyes. She looked exceptionally beautiful and endearing today.
“Alright, then. Let’s prepare to start.”
The man did not mind. He, too, noticed Joe’s gaze and pretended not to mind it as he blocked the other’s view of his woman.
“You don’t understand. These kids need to be made comfortable first. Plus, you guys have tricked your son into coming here.”
