“Ziming, you’ve been taking care of me since last night.”

Pei Ge was very touched. She looked at the man, who was sporting a short stubble on his chin.

“Mhm, good that you know. How do you plan to repay me for this?”

His dark eyes bored into hers. The smile on his lips was the most gentle and breathtaking sight this morning.

“How does repaying you with my hand in marriage sound?”

She chuckled. Staring at him, she suddenly recalled a poetic line: ‘When I wake up every morning, the greatest joy is gazing upon you and the sunshine. That is the future I desire.’

The future she desired most was simply this.

“Your wound hasn’t healed completely yet, so you can’t do any vigorous exercises.”

Despite saying this, he was very clear that he was almost about to cave in. Hence, despite how honest his body’s display was, he still only settled for hugging her to sleep.

“Are you alright now?”

Pei Ge felt the sweetness all the way to her heart, but she still felt her heartache when she saw how tired he looked.

“Of course. I have to take care of my woman properly, after all. Go back to sleep and rest some more. You have me here to handle the company matters.”

Only at this reminder did Pei Ge recall that she still had pending business matters. However, before she could ask anything, Ji Ziming spoke.

“Don’t worry about the company. I’ve handled it already.”

He lay down beside her and gently hugged her shoulders. His voice was very gentle.

“Ge Ge, just rest well; you have me here.”

His voice was gentle and tingling yet also reassuring.

“Ziming, thank you. I know that, with you here, I don’t need to worry about anything.”

She shut her eyes and peacefully lay in his arms.

“That is for sure.”

His palm grazed the wound on her back, and the touch made his heart twist in pain. He Yun had already started investigating last night’s incident, and they should start receiving news this morning.

If it had been any later, he might not have been able to save her. The doctor told him that if he had been a few minutes later, the poison might have already spread to her brain and rendered her in a vegetative state. If that had happened, he would have likely torn the perpetrator apart.

Slowly, the woman fell into dreamland.

“Ge Ge.”

He gently called out, only to realize that she had fallen asleep again when he did not receive a reply.

While he lay staring at her sleeping visage, the phone he had placed on the bedside table suddenly lit up. It was a call from He Yun.

He slowly shifted her head to the pillow, then took the phone, and moved to the balcony. The morning air was still slightly chilly. Staring at the faraway scenery, he answered the call.

“Speak.”

His voice was cold, but the news he received from his subordinate made his heart freeze even more.

“Sir, something bad happened to the person who had put that powder in madam’s clothes.”

He Yun’s voice was filled with helplessness. If this sort of thing always happened at this kind of time, how would he explain it to his boss? More importantly, that person died an hour before he reached them.

“Okay.”

The man’s voice was frosty. His kingly temperament could not be overlooked.

“Sir, I am truly…”

He Yun was very exasperated. He did not know how to tell his boss this. The evidence that they were seeking had been destroyed before Ji Ziming even thought of finding it.

“It’s fine. Come back first. Since you can’t find any evidence, just return.”

Ji Ziming’s voice remained frosty. As he gazed at the faraway scenery, the dreary and dismal feeling inside him intensified.

He hung up the call and re-entered the room. Pei Ge was still sleeping in bed peacefully.

She finally woke up in the afternoon. It was hunger that called her up. She scoured the room with her eyes, but when she did not see the man anywhere, she felt empty inside. She touched the wound on her back. It was still rough.

The effects of the medicine were good. She looked at her reflection in the mirror for a while, finding that there were already signs of healing and new, pinkish skin underneath the scar. Although the scar still looked hideous, she knew that the doctor had already done his best.

Otherwise, she would not have recovered this fast in just two days.

The wound no longer hurt and was even turning into a scab. Still, what she was perplexed of remained in her head, and she could not get it out of it.

“Ge Ge, why are you up already?”

Ji Ziming opened the door and immediately spotted the woman standing in front of the mirror in her silk pajamas. The wound on her back had already turned into a dark-red scab. His eyes were dyed with ache when he spotted it, and his voice became even gentler and tender. “Go rest. Don’t stand here anymore; it will heal and not leave a scar.”

He felt his heart writhing in pain whenever he saw the wound on her smooth and tender skin.

There was no way one would feel fine when such a prominent and horrendous wound appeared on an originally smooth and beautiful skin.

He walked up and covered her with clothes properly. He then hugged her waist and led her back to the bed. “Ge Ge, just rest well. The doctor said that the medicine he had given us is the best out there. Your wound won’t leave a scar, and you will recover in about a week.”

“I’m worried about the wound on my back but the children at home, instead. Also, will uncle and mom—”

“No, they won’t. They have all gone out and are probably having fun right now.”

His lips curled up. He knew that this little woman would definitely be worried about their family—Ran Ran had just recovered and Qu Xiujie had only recently moved into their house, after all; how could she not be worried with their family made up of young and old?

“Out?”

She was surprised and even thought that she had misheard him.

“Yes. My mom suggested it. She said that she would not bring uncle, but with uncle’s temperament, how could he possibly let himself be left behind?”

His dark eyes were filled with her short stature. She was like a spotlight, lighting up every moment of his life. He was unable to neglect the numerous feelings he had and the happiness she brought him.

He knew that he loved her, very deeply so.

“Looks like we don’t even need to worry about uncle.”

She giggled. The paleness on her face was slowly being replaced by rosiness.

“Rest up some more. You don’t have to worry about anything, okay?”

He caressed her cheeks lightly. The smoothness of her skin lingered on his fingertips. It was as soft and tender as a baby’s skin. He then hugged her thin waist and buried his face in the crook of her neck.
