"The Class Ranking Battle is next week??"
The entirety of my classmates buzzed at the bombshell drop of news from Phyllis-sensei.
—‹Class Ranking Battle›.
It was one of the cornerstone events of this academy, akin to the inter-class ball competition or sports day in my previous world.
The event was pretty simple as its name implies, the entire class would band up as a single team and much in the same vein as guild battles, aiming for the victory via ‹Base Captures›.
In case of scoring the title of the competition, the game used to award an explosive amount of ‹Fame Points›, among other valuable articles. I really did work hard in them since some equipment and items were limited to this event.
The primary hindrance in this competition was the moving in the same rhythm with the class. After all, they were not our guild members so I still could remember the ardous effort I had poured in to lead them.
Well, this competition was going to be easy though. After all......almost half of the class was made up of our guild members. Fu-ha-ha-ha! The victory's going to be mine!!
Ahem, anyway, but were they going to conduct them next week? Normally, it was common knowledge that they would take place around the end of december etc, but they really have jumped the gun here.
Hmm, but considering they're rushing the matter, something must be decided ASAP.
"This is all for the information. Unless anyone has any question, let's decide on the leader for the ‹Class Ranking Battle›."
"Yes, Mam!"
Phyliis-sensei had just finished her words, bringing everyone's attention to the core matter, when a boy raised his hand. He was already up from chair.
That boy was Saturn. Unlike his wailing expression a while ago, his face looked as rosy as peach.
"You can speak from your seat, in fact, Saturn-kun. So, do you have something to say?"
"Yes! I would like to stand up for the position of leader for the upcoming ‹Class Ranking Battle›!"
It should have been barely a second as Saturn's remark left his mouth when three people reacted to his word with lightning speed.
"Fufu, you do rush things so much, huh, Saturn. I wouldn't overlook this transgression."
"It is indeed as he said. You really did think I would let you win over me, eh?"
"Now, do not forget this Venerable alright. Who else, but my great self, can be more suitable for the leader position?"
Here it comes. The classic skit of ‹Best of the Best, the Great Star›!
Wow, this skit truly hasn't changed from the past. I swear at that time, they......they...wait, how did they do it?
Just as I had suddenly tripped on my memory, Lana entered into my vision. Our eyes crossed.
Then, she seemingly exhaled and stood up.
"Good grief, that's quite rich words coming while ignoring our guild master."
Lana immediately become the eyes of everyone's attention, yet unfazed, she grandly pursued ‹Best of the Best, the Great Star›.
"The leader for ‹Class Ranking Battle› shall only be our guildmaster, Zephyr. Should you wish for sure victory, instead of the struggle and failure, back on your seat now."
"Fufu, I believe you know alright, eh? In the ‹Class Ranking Battle›, we hope you can put us on the spot where we can showcase our abilities to the best—ah, scratch that, I mean any decent enough spot would be alright. Of course, we aren't asking you to do it for free either."
"............I see. I guess it's your way to keep your spot in the class, huh?"
"Fufu, I had already finished with my supplementary classes, since I didn't visit my hone, but everyone else wasn't that fortunate. Their condition is so precarious they might truly end up splitting up from our class, which truly does make a sorry bunch."
"Kuh, damn you traitor......"
Jilong said, giving a snickering look to Saturn and the rest. Saturn's face scrunched up as if he was forced to swallow a bitter bug.
Their frustrating expression was quite an amusing sight to behold to be honest.
So basically, summarising Jilong's explanation, the long story cut short was—
‹Best of the Best, the Great Star› and ‹Machos› were currently treading on thin ice for scoring failing marks. With the law of meritocracy that this world follows, the Class-1 was typically the most settled due to the level difference and all, however that's only till someone fumbled, and in this case they had failed their first-term exams.
The foremost task of students was always to study. The high level was mere decoration when the academic capabilities were just as, if not more, valued upon. So despite having little to no chance of upheaval, Class-1 wasn't free of landmines either.
They could have perhaps made a comeback, but the current situation was obviously against them. The class shuffle event was almost imminent.
Now, the flustered ‹Best of the Best, the Great Star› and ‹Machos› were almost guaranteed to take a fall from here.
However, they'd been extended spider's thread by a stroke of luck—the ‹Class Ranking Battle›.
It was the much needed stage for them to showcase effort, their forte. As long as they could convince others with either abilities and strength, they could somehow retain as someone befitting for ‹Class-1›.
Apparently, the drive behind their candidacy was also to relieve their current dilemma. But since their plan didn't come to fruition, now they were here, seeking my help.
Hmm...the bundle of pride had truly mellowed down, huh. Oh wait, maybe it was just the call of their instinct facing the danger.
"You heard our plight, so what's the answer, Zephyr?!"
"Behave there."
"Woof! —No wait, what the heck are you making me do!"
Saturn was closing up a bit too much so I signalled him to wait right there, meanwhile I contemplated over the matter.
For a moment, I felt like Saturn barked...maybe the sight of boys around me in this heat was making me go crazy.
Anyway, I think it's really not much of a problem when I look at the overall scenario. At the end, ‹Eden› would be leading the whole class, so making the best use out of them was the basic if anything.
Well, this was it.
"Fine. I will make sure to set you up at the centre of ‹Class Ranking Battle›."
"Z-Zephyrrr!! Perhaps, I really did misunderstood you all this time."
I mean, if we, the ‹Eden›, step up to take the stage, no one would be getting their turn after all. They would be crushed just with the difference in level.
It would take the fun and motivation out of our opponents as well.
My reason to leave the stage was not my consideration for their situation, but since Saturn looked so moved I decided it's better left unsaid.
