Three days had passed since Mira had been brought into the sanctuary, and although she was slowly settling into her new surroundings, her trust in others remained fragile. The sanctuary was a place of peace and beauty, yet Mira still found solace only in Canna's presence. She followed him everywhere, her small hand clinging to his as they walked through the lush landscape of the domain.
Canna was pleased to see that Mira was adjusting, albeit slowly. He had been worried that the trauma she endured would take much longer to heal, but the sanctuary seemed to be working its magic on her. One of the most surprising developments was her bond with Nyx, the massive shadow bear.
Canna had anticipated that Mira might be frightened by Nyx's imposing size and dark appearance, but to his amazement, she had taken an immediate liking to the bear.
Nyx, in turn, seemed equally curious about the little girl. The two had formed an unexpected friendship, with Mira often playing with Nyx's enormous paws or riding on his back as he lumbered gently through the trees. Their interactions were heartwarming, and Canna couldn't help but smile each time he saw them together.
Every time Canna was inside the domain, Mira was always by his side. Whether he was resting under the shade of a towering tree or lying in the soft grass, Mira would curl up next to him, her tiny form nestled against his. She had begun to smile more, and each smile felt like a victory to Canna.
The girl who had once been so broken and fearful was starting to heal, and Canna was determined to protect that smile at all costs.
One afternoon, as Canna lay on a patch of grass with Mira resting beside him, he received a telepathic message. It was Flora, letting him know that she and Mortem were returning to the domain with the birds he had requested. Canna gently nudged Mira awake, telling her that there was something special he wanted to show her.
Mira rubbed her eyes and looked up at Canna with curiosity. "What is it?"
"You'll see," Canna said with a wink, scooping her up into his arms as they made their way to the clearing where Flora and Mortem were expected to arrive outside the domain.
As they approached the clearing, Canna could already sense the presence of his subordinates. The air was filled with a faint rustling sound, and as they reached the clearing, Canna and Mira were greeted by a breathtaking sight.
Flora stood in the center of the clearing, her emerald eyes glowing with pride. Around her, perched on branches and fluttering through the air, were the birds that Canna had requested. There were large, crimson-winged birds with sleek feathers that gleamed in the sunlight—birds that looked remarkably like the Dracula parrots from Earth, though much larger.
Flora nodded, her expression warm. "It was our pleasure, Master. The sanctuary is truly becoming a place of wonder."
Canna looked down at Mira, who was now giggling as one of the Scarlet Nightwings perched on her shoulder. "What do you think, Mira? Do you like them?"
Mira nodded enthusiastically. "They're so pretty! Thank you for bringing them here!"
Canna smiled, his heart swelling with pride and affection for the little girl. "I'm glad you like them."
Canna opened up the portal to his domain, the birds went in and quickly explored their new home, Canna sensed something else—a familiar presence, one that had been growing stronger with each passing day. He could feel Stormtusk and his herd drawing closer, their powerful energy resonating with his own. It wouldn't be long now before they arrived.
But for now, Canna's focus was on the sanctuary and those who had come to call it home. He turned to Mortem, Vorgrim, Grimruk, and Flora, who had gathered around him. "I'd like to introduce someone," Canna said, gesturing to Mira. "This is Mira. She's going to be staying with us, and I expect all of you to make her feel welcome."
Each of Canna's subordinates bowed their heads respectfully, their expressions softening as they regarded the young girl. "Welcome, Mira," Flora said kindly, her voice gentle. "We're glad to have you here."
Mira shyly nodded in response, still a bit overwhelmed by the presence of Canna's powerful subordinates but feeling safe nonetheless.
Canna then addressed his subordinates with a more serious tone. "We'll have a meeting later today to discuss about a rot. For now, continue your duties and keep an eye on things."
The group dispersed, each returning to their respective tasks, while Canna remained in the spot with Mira. As he watched the birds take to the skies, their vibrant wings cutting through the air, he couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment. The sanctuary was growing, not just in size but in spirit.
As the day drew to a close, Canna felt a renewed sense of purpose. There were still challenges ahead, but with the sanctuary thriving and his subordinates loyal and capable, he was more determined than ever to see his vision come to life. And with Mira now under his protection, Canna had even more reason to ensure that the sanctuary remained a safe haven for all who sought refuge within its borders.
