Ch 23

The man seems to be the so-called white student.

When Yeon-hee woke up in the morning, she read a book, drew a picture during the day, and read another book at night. There was no one going in and out of the house, and no one going far away.

“I am very hungry…”

It was said that if you become a nine-tailed fox, you will be full even if you don’t eat. She didn’t feel cold even when there was rain and wind, but now her spiritual power was as low as a lamp in the wind.

“Shall we take a look?”

The scholar’s house looked shabby from the outside, but the barn wasn’t like that at all.

“Who has this on top of this mountain?

“Did he leave it all behind?”

The place, where rice sacks piled up like a mountain, filled with wine jars, dried fruits, and fish, was a special place for Yeon-hee.

“There are so many, can’t he spare some?”

Yeon-hee sat on a rice bale and skimmed the dried persimmons.

(Dried persimmons are sweet and chewy like jelly candies. In Korea the fresh fruit is harvested in the fall, tied with string, and hung to air-dry.)

“Sweet. Sweet.”

After purging the barn of a scholar for a while, she thought that this was not the time yer.

“So, when should I seduce this guy to swallow him? “

Yeon-hee cooked rice and made only sikhye.

(Sikhye (Korean sweet rice drink) is one of the most popular Korean drinks. It has a moderately sweet flavor and unique barley smell)

Then, after putting it on the table with dried sweet potatoes

Korean sweet potatoes have purplish-red skin and pale yellow flesh. It’s delicately sweet with a mild chestnut flavor.

She knocked on the scholar’s door.

“Have some, please. ”

“Didn’t I tell you not to do useless things?”

Yeon-hee has been here for three days and she started getting impatient.

“This is what my deceased mother told me I should do as a sign of courtesy.”
