Chapter 139: Ri

"May I see it?"

"Egh? Sure . . ." Rain retrieved the egg from his inventory, surprised to find it warm to the touch and faintly throbbing, as if it might hatch soon.

But he knew it might still take time. There had been false alarms before — moments when he thought the egg was ready to hatch, only for the anticipation to fade.

Even now, as it pulsed with a faint warmth, the promise of new life remained just out of reach, teasing him with its mystery.

"I've had this egg for a while now," Rain said, attempting to lighten the mood. "It keeps telling me it'll hatch soon, but at this rate, I'm starting to think 'soon' might mean a year from now." He chuckled, trying to make a joke out of it.

But Eve wasn't laughing. Her expression remained serious as she carefully took the egg into her hands, her gaze intent and focused.

"The creature inside this egg is powerful," Eve explained, her eyes narrowing as she assessed it. "That's why it needs so much magical energy to fully develop. I can feel it trying to hatch, even though its time hasn't come yet."

"Eh? Really? Isn't it just a goblin egg, though?" Rain asked, genuinely puzzled. He'd always believed it was just a goblin egg — something the old scam artist at the marketplace had pawned off on him in exchange for a hundred-dollar bill.

That was also why he hadn't paid much attention to it. He didn't want to be rude by throwing away a gift, and deep down, he felt a pang of guilt at the thought of discarding a life that was about to be born. Otherwise, the egg would've been tossed out long ago.

"This isn't just some simple goblin," Eve said, her palm cradling the egg as it began to glow with a dark, otherworldly energy.

Suddenly, the black energy began to siphon into the egg, as if it were eagerly absorbing it.

"Hm? What a greedy little creature you are," Eve chuckled, watching as the egg continued to draw in her magical energy.

"Uh . . . is it really okay to do that?" Rain asked, a hint of worry creeping into his voice. He didn't want to anger Eve, fearing she might crush the egg if it annoyed her.

"No need to worry. I have an unlimited supply of magical energy."

Rain blinked in disbelief. Did she just boast herself?

But the claim of having unlimited magical energy? That was unreal. As his knees began to tremble, Rain realized just how powerful Eve truly was.

After a few more minutes, the egg finally stopped absorbing the energy. It began to pulse rapidly, cracks forming along its surface.

Eve, standing off to the side, was momentarily surprised by the creature that had hatched, her eyes widening slightly before a knowing smile curved her lips. "An Oniborne," she murmured, her voice tinged with both awe and curiosity.

However, this was no ordinary Oni . . . it was a Bender class, something she had never encountered before.

"Oni?" Rain repeated, his mind racing to recall what little he knew about the race.

The life of an Oniborne was one marred by fear and suspicion. Descendants of the fearsome oni — grotesque and dangerous yokai — many other humanoids viewed Oniborne as savage, ugly, violent, and cruel, more demon than fey. These ancient stereotypes had been passed down through generations, woven into bedtime tales of terror and warning.

Whether virtuous or villainous, all Oniborne suffered under the weight of this crude prejudice.

Yet standing before Rain was neither vicious nor ugly. Instead, it was a young boy who could easily be described as handsome, though his cold eyes and emotionless face hinted at the simmering power within.

"Oniborne are descendants of yokai," Eve explained, her gaze fixed on Ri. "They are vessels of raw, untamed power that has been passed down through generations. Saturated in magic, Oniborne innately command primal, supernatural forces. In moments of high emotion, their magic can manifest instinctively.

A single retort can burn the flesh of an enemy, wounds might heal instantly under their touch in a moment of compassion, or they might physically shrink in fear."
