In his opinion, Lin Lan was both the brains and the beauty of Shanzui Village. Even if she had never been to school and she was not an educated youth, he couldn’t discredit her recent smarts.
In particular, it was Lin Lan’s contribution that resulted in the peaceful resolution of Liu Xiuyun’s matter, which he appreciated from the bottom of his heart.
“Lin Lan, don’t worry, I will not hesitate to discipline your boys. Director Han has already said that I could beat them up if the situation called for it, haha. So, don’t feel bad when the time comes,” Even though those were his words, the principal had never raised a hand against the children.
His trick was to implement detentions, copy textbooks, recite texts from memory before threatening that he would send disobedient students off to Director Han for reformation through labour!
The threat of being arrested and sent to labour by Director Han was enough to scare the kids, let alone the other aforementioned methods.
The images of the convicts who worked tirelessly and painstakingly in the farms burnt vividly in the children’s minds— who wouldn’t be afraid of such a threat?
Through the eyes of the children, Director Han was a fierce and sinister existence.
Even Dawang, who was usually awesome, brave and unafraid, stood like a stationary pine tree whenever he saw Director Han, did he not?
The other kids were not as powerful as Dawang, so naturally, they were even more terrified of the Director.
Lin Lan chatted with the teachers about their ideas on publicity and asked them for suggestions. She also asked if they could help arrange the entertainment programs, be it singing, dancing or story-telling.
Huo Yuan could play the accordion and Han Qingping could play the guitar. Therefore, they were both willing to join the publicity team.
“By that time, Xiaowang can play the harmonica,” Huo Yuan praised Xiaowang.
After saying goodbye to the teachers, Lin Lan took Xiaowang home, where the meal was ready.
Erwang’s cooking skills were getting better and better. There were cold kelp shreds, stewed potatoes with dried beans, shrimp skin in winter melon soup and so on. Lin Lan adorned a happy and motherly smile on her face knowing that even ordinary dishes like these could be made perfectly by her child.
“Your father won’t come home to eat today, so hurry up and eat your fills since you still have to go to school,” Lin Lan also said that Xiaowang was going to learn music from Teacher Huo from now on. Therefore, she asked them to take him to school.
Dawang and Sanwang acted as if it had nothing to do with them whereas Maisui and Erwang took the initiative to accept it.
Maisui, “Xiaowang, can you get up in the morning? Otherwise, you can go there after the first period ends.”
Xiaowang often played in the village anyways.
Xiaowang merely looked at Lin Lan.
Lin Lan said, “Alright then, since Xiaowang doesn’t have to attend classes, he can just go play.”
Sanwang, “Mom! Why am I forced to study and not play?”
Lin Lan gave him a light slap behind his head, “Why don’t you compare yourself with your older brother?”
Sanwang pointed to Dawang, “Eldest brother wants to play the most.”
Dawang glared at him before he broke off a pancake and stuffed it into Sanwang’s mouth, causing the younger of the two to protest loudly.
Laughter echoed throughout the room.
From then on, there was no one who remained idle in the family as Xiaowang even took Wangwang to school every day. However, since he mainly went to play or to learn some music skills, there wasn’t much of an issue even if he was late.
