Lin Lan was nourishing herself at the moment. Apart from earning work points from the publicity activities, she was going to other brigades to promote the act of earning money and food.
Since they now earned a rather hefty amount of food, the family could make sure that they were eating every meal, but they were also able to improve their diets with finer grains. She asks Dawang to send some of the leftover coarse grains to his grandma’s(1) family whilst also supporting the families in the village who were desperately in need.
(T/N: Don’t know if I mentioned this before, but grandma here refers to Lin Lan’s mother. Grandmother would refer to Han Qingsong’s mother whom we all have a bone to pick with)
In addition to that, they had fruits as well.
Some brigades have orchards, so if the Publicity Team wasn’t gifted with food, they would be given a myriad of fruits such as apples, pears, persimmons, hawthorns and the like.
She also sent Dawang and Erwang to deliver to their grandma and aunt’s house every day, but there were still a lot left at home.
When Lin Lan was cooking, she stewed a small pot of red dates and pears in rock sugar or stewed some hawthorn into apple juice. The children drank a bowl of it whenever they got home from school. It was warm and nutritious, yet sweet and sour, so the kids loved it a lot.
It was also a good thing to have a lot of children. There were those who liked to drink soup and those who liked to eat fruit pulps. Since they made up for each other’s likes and dislikes, not a single drop went to waste.
There were few vegetables that could grow in the winter, so without a luxurious array of vegetables in the garden, they would basically eat cabbage, radish and potatoes all season long. Fortunately, Lin Lan had made preparations and dried a lot of vegetables while also stocking up on pumpkins.
When she’s not promoting things with the Publicity Team, she would try to make delicious food at home. She cooked hearty meals and made all kinds of snacks such as pumpkin and jujube cakes, red bean paste buns, mashed potatoes, potato cakes, sweet potato beans and the like. Thanks to that, her children were able to eat their fill happily every day.
Sanwang’s first sentence after school every day was always, “Let’s guess what good food mother made for us today!”
Xiaowang replied that anything mother made was delicious, which was why he liked to eat everything.
Maisui and Erwang, inversely, mentioned that those who placed last in the exam wouldn’t have the right to eat.
Dawang then shot a cold glance at them before doubling his speed as he walked back home.
As they rushed to the door of the house one after another, Lin Lan was just sending Lin Mei off with a few pleasantries.
Lin Mei picked up Xiaowang, “What a rare cutie, how about you follow Third Aunt home?”
Sanwang made a joke, “Third Aunt, hurry and take him away. Once he’s gone, I will become mother’s biological son.”
Xiaowang immediately looked at Lin Lan nervously for fear that he would really be taken away by her and it made Lin Mei amused.
Lin Lan looked at the skies and carried Xiaowang down, “Let your Third Aunt leave so she can get home early.”
Xiaowang heaved a sigh of relief, no longer needing to worry about being taken away by his Third Aunt. He waved at Lin Mei and said “Come and play again, Third Aunt.”
