Alex entered the bas.e.m.e.nt to see his brother.
"Good morning, Boss!" Rudy greeted his employer.
"Good morning, Rudy. How's my brother today?" asked Alex.
"He behaves well, Boss," answered Rudy.
"How about his medicine? Was he taking them on time?" Alex asked again.
"Yes, Boss. I made sure he drinks his medicine in front of me," assured Rudy.
"That's good! I will go inside her room and talk to him for a while. You can go outside into the lawn if you wanted to breathe some fresh air," Alex suggested.
"Thank you, Boss." Rudy walked towards the stairs, excited to breathe some fresh air outside.
Alex opened the door with his key and entered the room.
His brother was lying on the bed, staring at the ceiling above, his eyes devoid of life.
"How are you feeling, brother?" Alex asked and sat on the edge of the bed.
Lucas's eyes shifted to his brother's face. "I'm fine. When will Caroline see me? Will-she ever see me?" he said with urgency in his voice.
Alex shook his head. "We met yesterday at the mall. I already told her about you. Still, she was hesitating to see you, brother. I guess, she might never see you at all. I just don't want to give you false hope. Please don't raise your hope high." He readied him for the truth.
Lucas released a deep sigh, feeling so sad, it shows in his eyes. After learning the truth that Caroline already had a new boyfriend he felt his heart was being stabbed a million times. Caroline will never come back to him, especially now that he was dying and he looks awful. But even so, he was still hoping that she would find it in her heart to at least visit him a few times before he will die just for the sake of their memorable past. Seeing her again would bring tremendous joy to his heart because he never loves other women, only her.
He remembered so well that they never broke up, he never had a new girlfriend, technically she was still his girlfriend. In his mind and heart, she was still his girlfriend, but for her, he was now the ex-boyfriend. "Is his new boyfriend, rich and handsome?" he asked his brother.
"Yes," Alex answered.
Tears shimmered in Lucas's eyes. When he was still sending her text, the only thing that prevented him from seeing her face to face was the fear that she may no longer accept him because he looks ugly, wasted, and emancipated. He used to be good looking but now due to his illness, he was reduced to a walking skeleton.
"I will send you abroad brother, we can find good doctors there," Alex persisted.
Lucas shook his head. "No need. No medicine can save me. Besides, they might discover my true identity that I am a wanted man and you are sheltering me. I don't want to implicate you. Although, you gave me a new identity as Lucas Lopez, still my real name is Greg. I don't want to be caught and thrown into jail. I'd rather die enjoying a bit of freedom than die in prison alone without relatives by my side. I'm ready to die, brother. I just want to see the woman I love so much before I die, that would make me happy. That's my dying wish," he said miserably.
"Let's hope for the best, brother," Alex said in a glum voice.
"What did she told you after she knows about me?" Lucas asked.
"She was surprised and asked me why you have a new name. I told her that she will know the truth after she will agree to see you for old time's sake," Alex answered. "I doubt if she will come to see you, she has not contacted me yet. But I will try my best to convince her to visit you even once."
"Several times, brother," he corrected him. "I like that she will visit me once a week. That would put a smile on my face," Lucas said smiling a bit.
Alex rubbed his brothers back affectionately. If only he can do something to force Caroline to see his brother, he would do anything. But he doesn't want to resort to extreme measures to secure Caroline for his brother. "What I want you to do is to start teaching yourself to forget her, brother. The sooner that you do the better for all of us. Caroline has her own life now. You two had grown apart from each other. She is no longer the naive lass you knew in the province. She is a different woman now and she already had a boyfriend, she won't leave him for you."
He wants to be brutally honest with his brother because it is the truth. Besides, dragging Caroline to their family problems is dangerous considering that Allison abducted Caroline's twin sister before. As much as possible he doesn't want his family to be associated with Caroline's family anymore. Then there is this wild attraction he felt towards Caroline, it must be stopped as well. The attraction he felt towards her was still on the infancy stage, it's still manageable. He won't let it grow no matter what.
But he was conflicted inside, wanting to please and make his brother happy in the remaining days of his life, he has no choice but to find a way to contact Caroline. If only his brother stops yearning for Caroline, then he would gladly drop this whole subject and go on with his life.
Lucas looked at the chain wrapped around his ankle and grimaced.
"Brother, I don't like being tied with the chain. Can you please take the chain away from my ankle? I promise you, I will not run away again. I won't hurt myself again. I just want to visit the lawn and breath fresh air. I don't like living here in the bas.e.m.e.nt anymore. I want to see the sunshine and see the rain again. Pleaseee?" Lucas begged.
Alex was hesitating. "But how many times you run away in the past? How can I trust you this time?" he asked just wanting to have assurance.
"I won't run again because you took away my credit card. Besides, I don't have money anymore. Where should I go? Who will feed me?" Lucas said with a gloomy sigh. "I just want a little bit of freedom, please?" He begged again pitifully.
"Alright, I will think about it. I will let you know tomorrow about my decision regarding your request. I'm expecting that you will stay true to your words," Alex said.
Lucas smiled. "Thank you, brother!"
Alex rose to his feet. "I'm leaving now. I'm going to my office. I will visit you tomorrow," he said and left the room.
