Chapter 84: It's time

Name:The Demon Queen's Contract Author:

The hooded figures were gone, the chamber empty save for me and the tall figure. They stood over me, their expression unreadable. "It is done," they said quietly, their voice filled with a strange mix of satisfaction and sadness.

As I struggled to sit up, my mind raced with thoughts of escape. The tall figure seemed momentarily distracted, lost in their own thoughts, which gave me a small window of opportunity. I glanced around the dimly lit chamber, searching for any possible exit or weapon I could use. The only light came from a few flickering torches on the walls, casting eerie shadows that danced across the stone.

Gathering my courage, I decided to make a run for it. I leapt to my feet, wincing as my legs wobbled under me, still weak from whatever ritual I had endured. The tall figure snapped back to attention, their eyes narrowing as they realized what I was doing.

"Don't even think about it," they warned, their voice low and threatening.

But I was already moving, ignoring the pain and fear that threatened to paralyze me. I sprinted towards the staircase, my heart pounding in my chest. I could hear the tall figure's footsteps behind me, gaining quickly.

I reached the base of the stairs and started to climb, my breaths coming in ragged gasps. My legs burned with the effort, but I forced myself to keep going, each step bringing me closer to freedom. As I ascended, I couldn't help but think of Seraphina, hoping that she would find me before it was too late.

The tall figure's voice echoed up the staircase, filled with anger. "You can't escape, Elara! There's nowhere to run!"

I ignored them, focusing on the steps ahead of me. The stone was cold and uneven beneath my feet, but I pushed on, my determination stronger than my fear. I reached the top of the stairs and burst into the open air, the forest stretching out before me.

For a moment, I was overwhelmed by the sheer beauty of the scene. The sunlight filtered through the trees, casting dappled shadows on the forest floor. The air was crisp and clean, a stark contrast to the dank, oppressive atmosphere of the chamber below. But I couldn't afford to admire the scenery for long. I needed to keep moving.

I dashed into the forest, branches and underbrush scratching at my skin as I ran. The tall figure was still behind me, their footsteps growing louder with each passing moment. I knew I couldn't outrun them forever, but I had to try.

As I ran, I tried to think of anything that might give me an advantage. The forest was dense and unfamiliar, but maybe I could use that to my benefit. I darted between trees, hoping to lose my pursuer in the thick foliage. But the tall figure was relentless, their determination matching my own.

Suddenly, I stumbled over a root, my ankle twisting painfully as I fell to the ground. I cried out in pain, clutching my ankle as I tried to stand. But it was too late. The tall figure was upon me, their shadow looming over me as they grabbed my arm and yanked me to my feet.

"You really thought you could escape?" they sneered, their grip tight and unyielding. "Pathetic."

I glared at them, refusing to show any fear. "I won't let you keep me here," I spat, my voice filled with defiance.

The tall figure chuckled, a low, sinister sound that sent chills down my spine. "Oh, Elara, you have no idea what you're up against. But don't worry, you'll learn soon enough."

They started dragging me back towards the stone structure, their grip like iron. I struggled against them, trying to break free, but it was no use. They were too strong, and I was too weak.

As we reentered the chamber, I felt a sense of hopelessness wash over me. The flickering torches cast long shadows on the walls, making the room feel even more oppressive. The tall figure shoved me towards the stone table, where I had been moments before.

"You'll stay here until we decide what to do with you," they said, their voice cold and final.

The tall figure didn't answer, instead turning and walking away. I tried to follow, but my legs gave out, and I fell to the ground. The last thing I saw before everything went black was the tall figure's retreating form, disappearing into the shadows.

When I woke again, I was back in the first chamber, lying on the cold stone floor. The pain in my ankle had lessened, but my body still felt weak and unresponsive. I tried to sit up, but my head spun, and I had to lie back down.

I didn't know how long I had been unconscious, but it felt like hours. The chamber was dimly lit, the flickering torches casting long shadows on the walls. I shivered, the cold seeping into my bones.

As I lay there, trying to gather my strength, I couldn't help but think of Seraphina. She had to be looking for me, I was sure of it. But would she be able to find me in time?

The sound of footsteps echoed through the chamber, and I tensed, my heart racing. The tall figure appeared, their expression unreadable. "It's time," they said again, their voice filled with an unsettling calm.

I struggled to my feet, determined not to show any weakness. "Time for what?" I asked, my voice stronger than before.

The tall figure didn't answer, instead motioning for me to follow them. I hesitated for a moment, but then decided it was better to go along

with them for now. Maybe I could find another opportunity to escape.

As we made our way through the winding corridors of the stone structure, I couldn't help but feel a sense of foreboding. What did they have planned for me? And why had they gone to such lengths to capture me?

We entered another chamber, this one larger and more ornate than the first. The walls were lined with intricate carvings, and the air was filled with the scent of incense. In the center of the room stood a large, circular platform, surrounded by hooded figures.

The tall figure led me to the platform, their grip still firm on my arm. "Stand here," they commanded, their voice leaving no room for argument.

I stepped onto the platform, my heart pounding in my chest. The hooded figures began to chant again, their voices rising and falling in a strange, hypnotic rhythm. The symbols on the floor started to glow, just like before, and I felt a strange energy radiating from them.

Panic surged through me as I realized they were going to perform another ritual. I had to get out of here, but there was nowhere to run. The hooded figures surrounded me, their chants growing louder and more insistent.

As the energy in the room intensified, I felt a strange sensation, as if I were being pulled in multiple directions at once. The symbols on the floor glowed brighter, the light almost blinding. I closed my eyes, trying to block out the overwhelming sensations.

But just as I thought I couldn't take it anymore, the chanting stopped. The room fell silent, the only sound my ragged breathing. I opened my eyes, blinking against the sudden darkness.

The hooded figures were gone, the chamber empty save for me and the tall figure. They stood at the edge of the platform, their expression unreadable. "It is done," they said quietly, their voice filled with a strange mix of satisfaction and sadness.

"What did you do to me?" I demanded, my voice shaking.

The tall figure didn't answer, instead turning and walking away. I tried to follow, but my legs gave out, and I fell to the ground. The last thing I saw before everything went black was the tall figure's retreating form, disappearing into the shadows.
