Forty-Seventh day

Liang Yan only needed to shoot the kiss scene today so that she could go home after.

In the dressing room, Liang Yan finished changing her clothes. Jiang Mu couldn’t help it, and he kept checking Liang Yan’s hand.

Now, this wasn’t an ordinary hand anymore, and this was a hand that slapped Lu Lincheng’s face.

“That’s enough…” Liang Yan shivered and seized her hand from Jiang Mu’s hold.

Jiang Mu said with a serious demeanor, “Ms. Liang Yan, can’t I interview you? What did you feel when your hand landed on Lu Lincheng’s face, giving a fatal blow?”

Liang Yan rubbed her hand on her clothes and replied, “It felt great.”

The two finished their work and went home.

So, when Lu Lincheng arrived at the dressing room, Liang Yan was nowhere to be seen. Only the make-up artist was packing up.

The makeup artist looked up and found Lu Lincheng standing by the door. Her heart raced wildly for several seconds before she forcefully calmed down. “Are you looking for Liang Yan? She has left long ago.”

A trace of consternation flashed in Lu Lincheng’s eyes.

Long gone…

Left…

She left so easily…

He froze there, and after a beat or two, slowly reached out to stroke his left cheek, still with fingerprints on it.

What a cruel woman…

After filming the emotional scene with Zhong Ze, she had nothing to do on the set for the next two days. She used this gap and shot two episodes of “A Hundred Heartbeats a Day.” Love mentor Liang Yan expressed her personal insights and then spent the rest of her time practicing her singing.

*********************************

In “Benevolence,” there was a special episode dedicated to the intern doctor, Liang Yan’s character, and the spoiled, wealthy second-generation heir played by Zhong Ze. It was named “When I Met You.” In line with their principle of making the best use of what they have, the producers gave Liang Yan the task of singing the theme song of the CP. Since it was a love team song, they handed it to one of the CP to sing.

Liang Yan was flattered and took it.

Nowadays, the trend was to let the lead actors sing the theme song of the movie or tv shows. Lu Lincheng has even sung a few songs for his own works.

“Sing it well,” the producer instructed her and gave her the lyric sheet. For a TV series, even though a theme song didn’t contribute much in the series, it was still the icing on the cake. And, sometimes, even if the drama wasn’t on fire yet, the song was already on repeat by the public.

Liang Yan’s hand trembled when she received the score sheet, and she nodded stiffly. “Okay… okay…”

Early in the morning, Jiang Mu arrived in Liang Yan’s residential area. They found a small garden area with only a few people near Liang Yan’s neighborhood, and it was the perfect place for practicing her singing.

Liang Yan’s singing posture was standard, and she stood straight in front of the flowers. She cleared her throat as she held the “When I Met You,” lyric sheet. Then, she took a deep breath and sang, “When I met you…”

Starting from the last word, the already precarious tone was like a gushing river encountering a cliff, plunging a thousand miles deep.

Jiang Mu grimaced as he listened.

When she saw Jiang Mu’s expression, Liang Yan put down the lyrics sheet with a sad face. They mirror each other’s expressions, complementing each other.

“What should I do?” Liang Yan asked with a bitter face.

“This… this…” Jiang Mu scratched his head while looking at Liang Yan. “This is very difficult to solve.”

Liang Yan has a little secret that she kept hidden all this time, that was —

She sings badly.

It wasn’t because of her timbre that Liang Yan’s singing sounded unpleasant. In fact, she had a beautiful timbre—crisp and bright, sometimes soft and waxy. As an actor, the most challenging part was her pitch. A group of people born in this world was well-known as tone deaf. As long as the person sang, they would be out of tune. Liang Yan belongs to that group.

Some people sang and didn’t know it, the more out of tune they were, the more they enjoyed singing. Liang Yan belonged to the group of self-aware people. These types of people hear themselves singing out of tune all the time, so from childhood until now, Liang Yan didn’t sing much. When she went with her classmates to KTV, she always ate fruit popcorn. After her debut, she didn’t sing in public or hum casually.

Liang Yan had always been vigilant, covering up her bad singing. She never thought that the crew would ask her to sing the theme song.

Initially, Liang Yan wanted to refuse but when she checked the contract, it was written in black and white that “The actors are obliged to cooperate with the film’s promotional activities such as post-production activities, including posting on Weibo, singing-related theme songs, and etc.”

The production trusted her very much.

After all, most girls that looked pretty and had a good voice tone were not bad at singing.

Jiang Mu suffered, his head aching. Just a few words, and she was already out of tune. How could a person be so out of tune? He stared at Liang Yan and asked seriously, “Tell me the truth, how did you get into the film school?”

Liang Yan’s lips pursed.”The acting department doesn’t test your singing. They ask you to perform a small recitation during the preliminary examination.” She must have been eliminated on the spot if it was a signing exam.

Thinking about the recitation, she suddenly had an idea. Liang Yan poked Jiang Mu with anticipation and asked, “What do you think about changing this song to a rap version? I can’t sing, but rap might just be okay. The yo, yo, yo kind.”

Jiang Mu: “………………”

“Hurry up and sing,” Jiang Mu said, rubbing the lyric sheet in Liang Yan’s hand. “Whether it’s out of tune or not, sing the whole song first. Then, we can use the tuner later.”

“Tuner?” Liang Yan realized that there was such a magical creation in this world such as the tuner. It was said that a tuner could turn it into bass even if it were a pig’s hum.  What was she afraid of?

It was just for a drama episode. As long as she didn’t sing live in the future, perhaps no one would find out about her secret.

She suddenly regained her confidence, held up the lyrics sheet, and cleared her throat. “Listen carefully, I’m starting.”

Liang Yan: “When I met you, my world suddenly took on color. Your smile is so bright, embellishing my dark night. I found out what it means to fall in love, at the moment of meeting, oh~~~ can you hold my hand, how can it be so difficult for us baby…”

Liang Yan sang with great emotion as if she wasn’t out of tune. The tune ran away by itself.

Jiang Mu’s confidence once again suffered a debilitating blow.

This song ……

How expensive did the tuner have to be?

Liang Yan finished the first half of the song, and asked Jiang Mu with some expectation, “What do you think?”

Jiang Mu’s expression became a picture of struggle. He wanted to say that it was okay, but he couldn’t utter the words because of his conscience. It was also inappropriate to say that it wasn’t okay because of Liang Yan’s effort.

Liang Yan noticed Jiang Mu’s expression, and knew what he was thinking. She snorted.

“I don’t want to sing.” She tossed the lyric sheet.

Jiang Mu said, “No, you have to practice more. You’ll be fine after practicing more.”

He added while clenching his fists secretly while showing a sincere face, “I’ll accompany you! You can do it!”

Anyway, he wouldn’t die if he listened to her singing.

“Okay…” Liang Yan looked at the lyric sheet and sang again.

Jiang Mu listened to Liang Yan’s singing, resisting the urge to cover his ears. He closed his eyes in despair.

He recalled that in order to chase Lu Lincheng, Liang Yan learned his songs. The tone-deaf learned his songs for love. She sang to her heart’s content, and when she thought she had mostly knew it, she sent the recording of her voice to Lu Lincheng’s WeChat.

No wonder Liang Yan was immediately blocked by Lu Lincheng.

She was howling like a werewolf.
