Ahri lets out a big sigh.
“Good grief, seriously… Master Rust, you should think about your position first.”
“Position…?”
“You have surpassed Lady Kalin in terms of the number of demons you have defeated. Do you understand what that means?”
“Ah…”
“I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say you are the de facto number two in rank, right behind Kalin here in the Admiral dominion. You could even ask the royal family to bestow upon you a part of the Admiral dominion if you so wished, or be given some other land entirely and create a new noble house.”
No, I don’t want all that trouble…”
“I know that very well, and obviously so does Lady Kalin. But please, be aware of what would happen if something were to happen to Lady Kalin.”
“Yes…”
“So, about your conduct during this incident…”
“Yes…”
Is she still going? Is it actually just starting?
Unfortunately, my fears don’t turn out to be unfounded.
I get this talk from Ahri for a while, and in summary, she’s warning me about not taking my own safety into consideration when I was dealing with Zwei.
In the middle of it, I unconsciously object when she says that I should have prioritized my own safety, even if it meant leaving Roa, but when Ahri starts using my position to make rational arguments, I can’t say a word.
But in the end, I would most definitely not abandon her even if the same thing happened again.
I keep that to myself though, and Ahri lets out another big sigh as I stay quiet.
“Obviously, as her sister, I’m happy that Roa made it back safely, and I am very thankful to you on a personal level. And I am also very happy that you brought my friend, Taula as well.”
She stops briefly before continuing.
“But as I said earlier, both Roa and I are fighters. When the time comes to protect those we have to keep safe, we can break our spears and throw our lives. We understand that is our place, and we are ready for that. You and Lady Kalin on the other hand have high combat abilities, but your positions are different. Please understand that.”
“I know you and your sister have great resolve, and I’m really sorry for what happened, but all I can promise you is that I will try my best to not let the situation escalate to the point where someone’s life is at stake again. I can’t promise you I will abandon a comrade. I guess that’s why I’m not fit to be a politician like Kalin.”
“Geez!”
I take that chance to hand Ahri a third plate I sneakily ordered. This one is a jellylike and fresh sweet with a citrus fruit flavor.
“Master Rust…”
“Can you take just one bite to try it? It goes down really easily.”
“Geez…”
Ahri complains as she grabs a spoon and starts eating.
