Chapter 50 – World of Two People (part 2)

Bai Xi only felt her body falling quickly. The sound of the wind whistled in her ears and her cheeks hurt a bit. She was afraid that her mask would be discovered. The pain she felt was like she had been whipped. The hairpin fell, and her hair, like black jade, fluttered in the wind. This feeling couldn’t compare to her previous bungee jumping experience.

“If you’re scared, close your eyes.”

She relaxed when she heard his voice, which was still as indifferent, but somewhat gentle. The feeling of her heart being stuck in her throat dissipated. His voice gave her a sense of security.

She then realised that she couldn’t see the top of the cliff anymore. There were only rocks of various shapes on the side of the cliff. She also couldn’t see the bottom. In such a situation, it was only natural for her to be terrified, but she wasn’t; her heart was calm.

“Hold on tightly,” he said directly into her ear. Bai Xi reached out to hug Feng Ming. In the next moment, she felt that she was no longer falling. Instead, they were gradually descending the cliff face.

She finally understood his position in the imperial court. He was the only official who sat in front of the emperor. He would ignore the emperor just like that, which wasn’t the kind of attitude one should have towards their ruler. This attitude was not only because he held a power equal or greater than the emperor, but because he also had great capabilities. As long as he wished for it, nobody could stop him. She had no idea how powerful one had to be to be able to freely walk down a cliff, but he managed to do so.

It turned out that the Ice Lord whom everyone worshipped had an impressive background and unfathomable power. She was insanely jealous of him.

But how could a person like her, who was supposed to be an ordinary person, no longer be ordinary? They genuinely got along for a few hours in this forest. This was proof that she was able to thaw his icy heart. Why did he say those words that made her heart beat faster?

“Do you actually think that I am a good lifelong partner1, an ideal future husband?” Feng Ming lowered his head to look at the person holding on to him tightly. The corners of his lips curled upwards slightly.

Bai Xi abruptly returned to her senses and found that they had made it to the ground safely. They were no longer falling, nor surrounded by cliffs or raging rivers, nor in a dense forest. Rather, the mist curled around them, giving off a feeling of being in a misty paradise.

“This is the bottom?” It didn’t seem to be since she remembered passing through the crevices in the cliff with martial arts. At that time, she remembered everything was dark, but now she was in such a beautiful fairyland after she returned to her senses.

Feng Ming raised his hand and lifted her chin. He repeated his previous question once more. “Do you think that I am a good lifelong partner, an ideal future husband?”

Bai Xi did not answer Feng Ming immediately. She raised her right hand and placed it on his heart to feel his heartbeat. She found that, while he had a strong heartbeat, it was beating normally. That meant that he was extremely calm when he asked her this. Was this a good or bad thing? She found she was unable to discern his true intentions.

“That is under investigation.” Maybe his version of ‘like’ was not what she thought it was, or maybe this was the real Ice Lord. Nobody could affect his lonely heart or melt his icy heart.

Then she… Forget it. She’ll give it half a year. If she fails to feel any affection for him during that time, then she can only say that they weren’t meant to be.

His gold eyes flickered, as if pondering the meaning of her words.

“The scenery here is indeed beautiful, but you surely didn’t take me here just to look at it, did you?” Bai Xi shook off the hand that held her chin and looked around with beautiful eyes.

“Let’s go.” Feng Ming glanced at Bai Xi’s back. He turned gracefully and walked forward. But when he turned around, he raised his left hand and placed it over his heart. He wanted to know what Bai Xi meant by ‘under investigation’, or maybe he wanted to know why Bai Xi did this action and why was there a trace of loss in her eyes?

The two people walked forward. Bai Xi no longer paid any attention to her surroundings and instead her black pupils focused on the figure walking in front of her. He was a little over 1.8 metres, handsome, had brilliant golden eyes, and had a compelling aura. This was a man who was loved by god, the dream lover of many women. He said he liked her. Should she be happy or worried?

Should she be happy because such a perfect man likes her, or should she be worried that this man’s appearance could attract a lot of trouble? Was her decision right or wrong? Forget it, what’s done is done. She already decided to follow her heart. Even if they don’t stay together in the end, at least she won’t regret it.

“Why are you so easily distracted?” Feng Ming’s eyes flashed with unreadable emotions and his voice was slightly more indifferent.

“I’m not.”

“Hm?” Feng Ming didn’t believe her words and he stared at her.

Bai Xi always felt that he could see through her thoughts. She smiled slightly. “I was just looking around.”

“Are you thinking of me?”

“No.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

“Then do you know what I’m thinking now?”

“No?” If she was able to tell what he was thinking, then she wouldn’t have had to think so much before.

“I’m thinking…”

Feng Ming closed the distance between them until they were close enough that she could feel his breath on her cheeks. Bai Xi took a step back, but he reached out to hug her. In an instant, she was pressed against him. Before she could react, he put his right hand over her heart, but from her point of view, he was touching her chest.

“You… What are you doing?” After Bai Xi broke free from his embrace, she took a few large steps backwards and stared at Feng Ming, her guard raised.

Feng Ming didn’t seem to hear her. He then placed his hand over his own heart and seemed to understand something.

“Feng. Ming.”

“So a heart can jump like that,” he said lightly as he showed a clear smile she had never seen before.

“Eh?”

“Is your heart beating quickly because of me?”

1.(歸宿) partner – this term actually means something along the lines of ‘a place to return to’ or ‘final destination/home’, which I interpreted to be a lifelong partner.
