Chapter 22 – Selfish
The amount of people who came to rent in the slums weren’t little, but there were also plenty of rooms here. Since the previous tenants moved out, a few people had come to see the room.
There were two properties on the third floor, both of the 2LDKs. One was where Luo Bei and Grandma stayed and the other was leased out, although at present, there were no tenants yet.
However, Grandma Luo and Luo Bei weren’t in a hurry. They had been landlords for many years. As the population of the city increased, not everyone could stay in the residential areas. Some people were unwilling to spend too much on rent even if they could afford it, so there was never any problem with renting out properties in the slums.
Luo Bei had nothing to do on the weekends so he would always go over to help Zhao Pianpian take care of her child. The two were now good friends and Luo Bei really liked Baby Chen. Seeing that Zhao Pianpian had no friends and was lonely, she often came over to accompany her. There were also times when she would stay over.
It was Saturday night. Baby Chen had been taught a very good habit: he would sleep at nine o’clock in the evening, wake up at midnight to drink milk and wake up once more at five o’clock in the morning.
Luo Bei and Zhao Pianpian lazed on the sofa, watching TV and chatting. It was a little before ten o’clock in the morning. They hadn’t had more than two hours of sleep so they were waiting for the baby to wake up and feed him before going back to sleep.
Zhao Pianpian had decorated the place to exude warmth and welcome. She loved to keep things clean. When Grandma Luo helped babysit, she would take that free time to clean up the apartment. Her home was kept neat and clean.
Previously, when Luo Bei read overbearing CEO novels, she had always felt that the female lead had no other charms than being loved by the male lead. Now that she befriended Zhao Pianpian, she instead realized that those unique, charismatic people were hard to come by in this world. Most people were ordinary people. At first glance, Zhao Pianpian did not have enough strengths to be likeable for the audience, but she was very easy to get along with. That was her rare charm.
“Beibei, I’m going to look for a job after the baby’s completely weaned off milk.”
Halfway through watching TV, Zhao Pianpian suddenly declared.
Luo Bei was nibbling on cucumber. Upon hearing her, she turned her head to look at her with a puzzled expression, “Look for a job?”
Zhao Pianpian nodded, “I’m going to first look for a job where I can work from home. I haven’t gone to work for such a long time, I’m scared that I’ll be out of touch from the workforce.”
Luo Bei lost her control for a moment, asking, “Don’t you have a lot of money in the bank?”
Although Zhao Pianpian had never told her the exact amount, Luo Bei was someone who knew how the story would flow, not to mention how much money Zhao Pianpian had saved after working for a few years. She took Mrs. Lei’s cheque and had at least five million dollars in her possession. Not fifty thousand, not five hundred thousand, but five million. Although the average price of a property these days was a few million, five million dollars was still a huge sum of money for the average person!
Zhao Pianpian sighed and shook her head, “Although I won’t have to worry about putting food on the table and clothes on our back for the baby and I for at least a few years, I want the child to receive good education in the future. All these require a lot of money. What’s more, I spent so much time studying and finally graduated. It’s not that I’m not willing to give my all for my child…” She paused and continued after she had her emotions under control, “My child isn’t like other children. He would only have me in the future. I would be his mother and his father. Not only should I accompany him, I have to also set a good example and role model for him. That’s why I want to look for a job after weaning him off his milk.”
