"Sir, our mem confirmed that Mrs. Lu was already brought to the hospital yesterday."
Michael Song was carefully reading through a report in one of his homes in the US when he received news from his assistant. He smiled and breathed in happily before answering, "That's good to hear. It means the disease successfully affected her. Let's return to China after a week and schedule an appointment with Lu Fang. I am very excited about our meeting."
"The Eagle's Eyes have been missing for a month, sir. His work is not yet done. We had already paid him for half of the work," said his assistant.
"That is okay. I have already changed my mind. I won't destroy her or her family. It's too tiresome," said Michael Song before fixing his coat, getting ready to leave.
"Then… What are you planning with Mrs. Lu?" asked his assistant.
"He closed his eyes, seemingly imagining of his plans and said, "I want her to be like Anna only that she will be in China - "
"No, brother. You can't do this!" Landon Song came up from behind the door. He was apparently eavesdropping from their earlier conversation. "Brother, this is not how you win a woman's heart. Moreover, that woman is already married!"
"Landon, brother… I do as I please - "
"What about Anna? You have taken her completely, is she not enough? Was it not enough that you have made her abandon her life? Don't you - Don't you love Anna?" Landon's words were loud and clear. He was furious with how easily his brother can toy with other people's lives.
"No. I have fallen out of love with Anna, but I know you love her," He sat up and gestured his assistant to lead the way before adding, "You can have her now, Landon. I've already grown tired of her."
"And... So what if I do as I pleased onto them? Remember how our father played with our lives? It made us stronger. We became two strong-willed individuals. If they are good enough, they will survive what I have prepared for them."
Seeing the door shut behind him, Landon Song thrust his hand against the door. He no longer knew what to do. He loved his brother. He is his only family but how long will he support his madness. Given that they were abused as children, was it reason enough for him to excuse his actions?
'Amaryllis Red was right to kill their father,' he thought to himself. He can only imagine how broken they might have been if they were continuously used as a punching bag by their own flesh and blood.
"This is no longer right," he told himself. "I need to help them." He began crying thinking of how much of a coward he was. He repeated himself saying, "I need to help them like I should have helped Anna."
Meanwhile, back in China, Andrea was admitted to the hospital again. Her blood work showed a decrease in her electrolytes. It shocked her attending doctor thoroughly. It was just a week ago that he had checked her; it made him question what possibly caused it.
She was given electrolytes via IV and encouraged to drink lots of fluids. Lu Fang had provided her with all the nutrients and supplements she needed to get better. There was nothing to suggest she had a major infection. She did not have a fever, nor was her red blood cells going down. Thus, she only received hydration treatment.
At night, they discussed what they had learned so far. They were both lying in bed next to each other as they spoke.
"Darwin said there is no known cure. It's still a disease that has not been studied, given the infection was contained in Tanzania. However, he has been reaching out to his partners in Africa to find out more," said Lu Fang.
"I have a strong body, babe. Maybe - just maybe I can fight it," Andrea said while blankly looking at the ceiling.
The man turned to her side and hugged her tightly. He kissed her cheek and tried to reach her lips but she turned her head away saying, "Whatever it is I have. We don't know for sure if you won't catch it."
Eventually, she turned her back completely away from her husband and added, "What if the children will catch it too?"
"No, babe. Darwin said the disease doesn't work that way. Unless it was purposely injected, like what we suspect happened, it only develops in women," Lu Fang tried to make her feel comfortable, repeating what they had already known.
"Still, the fact that not much is known about this illness, we should have the children stay with mom and dad, for now, babe." She was silent for a second before speaking again, "It worries me so much. We were wrong to assume that I was never infected. We were too reckless."
It did not take long for a tear to fall down her cheek. "Babe, we had sex… What if… what if you get it too?"
"Shhh… I won't, babe. I won't… Plus, we are not really sure what's wrong with you, but I've already sent your blood sample to Darwin. Since the symptoms have already manifested, if the disease is really there, it will show in your blood now. We will find a solution, don't worry," said Lu Fang while hugging his wife tightly.
Sadly, there was no laboratory in China that had studied the disease. It was only being examined in the US and in Africa.
Andrea stayed in the hospital for two days and was released, feeling better. Like what they had planned, the children were sent to Christina and Lu Wei. Andrea could only see them through a video conference since she wanted to be sure she was not infectious. Only Lu Fang and Hanxi went to visit the babies from time to time.
It was difficult for her, not being able to hold, touch or kiss her children but she had to endure. For their sake.
After a week, she began to have a soft bowel movement and started to feel weak. She ended up fainting again and Lu Fang rushed her to the hospital once more. It was her third admission in just two months and she could tell it had taken a toll on her husband.
It was at the same time that Darwin called to confirm the findings of Andrea's blood sample. He called Lu Fang and said, "I'm sorry to say this but it's confirmed. She had indeed developed the Kimya Disease."
