Chapter 114 - When can I sigh?

The next day, Han Ye was working in his room at the office when he heard a knock.

"Come in," he said, without even looking up. He had to follow DX out for a meeting at 3 pm and at this moment, he was busy gathering every information about the CEO of the company that Du Corporated was interested with.

An intern came in and said, "There's a woman who said that she's your new assistant."

"Oh. Why didn't the receptionist call me?" Han Ye frowned as he looked at him.

"She tried, but she said that it didn't go through."

Han Ye glanced at his desk phone and realized that he failed to put his receiver back properly. With a sigh, he adjusted it as he said, "I'll be out shortly."

"Oh, and I passed by President Du's room earlier. He told me to send you this message. 'You missed my calls twice. Your wings have grown bigger now, right? Come to my room after you settle your new assistant'. The end."

Han Ye grimaced as he waved a hand at the intern so that he would leave his room. After the intern left, Han Ye groaned and banged his forehead against the table twice. Because of the soon-to-be-here son of his, DX had been more wound up than usual.

As his assistant, Han Ye had to suffer a lot more during this period of time.

As he put on his blazer, he murmured, "That man. If I really quit, he's going to regret his a*s."

When he walked to the waiting room to meet Xiao Lei, he was surprised when he saw her standing at the door with her arms folded. She was wearing a light pink short-sleeved blouse with a pencil skirt that reached her knee, and a pair of cute black pumps that made her legs look longer than usual.

He noticed that Xiao Lei was looking around the office with her lips slightly parted as if she were really interested in what everyone was doing.

"Is she wearing a makeup?" Han Ye thought as he stared at her face. He was so used to seeing her without one that it made him slightly uncomfortable to see her with makeup on. He already thought her to be beautiful without any makeup, but with makeup on, she looked like a goddess rather than a secretary.

All the guys in the office were staring at her and Han Ye shot them a glare to tell them to get back to work.

"Han Ye, she's your secretary..." He murmured as he shook his head to wake himself up. He then put on a serious expression as he walked to her. "Ms. Xiao."

"Ah, Han Ye." She smiled at him brightly as she asked, "What do you think of my attire? Ziyan helped me with it earlier."

Han Ye could hear whisperings from behind him, so he cleared his throat and told her, "It's Mr. Han when we are in office."

She chuckled as she thought that he was joking around. When he raised a brow at her, she faked a cough and said, "Mr. Han."

He then pointed toward a desk with his chin and said, "Let's go. Your seat's ready."

He took her to the desk that was situated right outside his room.

"Wait, aren't you a secretary?" Xiao Lei asked when he told her that it was his room. She peeked around the room and saw files stacked upon files on the table, and there were even more files on the two bookshelves in the room.

"Yes, I'm President Du's personal assistant. It's like a secretary position, but the difference is that I only report to him. So, your role is the same. On paper, you're hired as my secretary, but what you'll be doing is more to what a personal assistant will do."

She nodded as he explained. "You have your own room."

"I'm special."

"I bet," she murmured. From her memory, she remembered that in her father's office, only certain people had their own rooms, and these people were usually important to the company. She glanced at Han Ye and thought, "I guess he's a pretty important guy to President Du."

"Enough. Ok," he said seriously as he pointed to a yellow sticky note on her computer screen, "this is your username and password. You can set your password once you log in later."

He then told her everything that she needed to know. At the end of it, he asked, "Did you remember everything?"

"Yes." She nodded seriously.

"Really?"

She scoffed, "I might not be formally educated, but I'm not an idiot."

Han Ye sighed. "Ms. Xiao, I'm your boss. There's a no sarcasm rule."

She sighed and pouted. "Fine."

"No sighing and pouting either."

"Yes, boss."

"That boss was sarcasm, is it not?"

She growled. When he looked at her with a brow raised, she calmed herself down and said with a serious tone, "Yes, Mr. Han."

Seeing that he might have hired a difficult secretary for himself, Han Ye sighed.

"You said no sighing." Xiao Lei pointed out.

"Well, I'm your boss. I can sigh."

"Then when can I sigh?"

"After office hours."

Xiao Lei suddenly grinned and asked, "What if my boss is a jerk?"

"Welcome to my life..."

He felt a cold chill all of a sudden, and when he turned, he saw DX standing behind him. Based on the sharp glare that DX was giving him, it was obvious that the man had heard everything he said.

"P-President Du, it's not what you think."

"Welcome to your life, huh? I'll see you in my room later."

Without waiting for his reply, DX walked away while Xiao Lei giggled.

"You did it on purpose." Han Ye glared at her. However, Xiao Lei continued to look at him unapologetically. Suddenly, Han Ye felt more tired than ever, and he said, "I'm starting to regret my decision."

With a genuine smile, she patted him on the shoulder and said, "It's too late. I signed the contract earlier, so you can't back out now. I might not be highly educated, but I have enough life experience to know what to look out for in a contract. So, unless you want to pay me 3 months salary in advanced for immediate dismissal, you'll have to bear with me and give me at least a month notice."

Knowing that she was right, he merely waved a hand nonchalantly as he walked into his room. "I'm going back to work. If you have any problems, you can just ask around or come in and ask me."

"Yes, Mr. Han."

Han Ye suddenly stopped in his track and turned around to ask, "Oh, have you eaten your lunch?"

"Yeah. Ziyan and I went for lunch after shopping."

"Great," he said. Based on her expression yesterday when he asked her to come work for him, he was worried that she might be too worried to eat. Guess he should have known by now. Nothing could ever stop the woman from eating.

Before he closed the door, he murmured, "By the way, you look great. Good job."

After he closed his door, Xiao Lei smiled and muttered under breath, "Great? I look gorgeous, please!"

Even since she started living with Xiao Yunjie, she had never worn any kinds of formal clothes. Even for Xiao Zhihao's kindergarten and primary school graduation, she had merely worn a simple dress to attend.

Hence, when she checked herself out in the mirror earlier, for the first time in a very long while, she thought that she looked pretty. Feeling vain, she took a selfie of herself using her new phone and sent it to her son.

Along with the picture, she wrote-

[ Your mum is now an office lady. How do I look? Pretty, right? Aren't you glad you have such a beautiful mother? ]
