Chapter 174 - Egg Retrieval Day (8)

She was so worried that the Mole Man might have found her. Back when she saw him on the street, there was no hint of recognition whatsoever in his eyes, and she knew; she knew because their eyes met briefly before he looked away from her as if he had just seen another random person.

Therefore, she had told herself that he did not know what she looked like now and that he was here looking for her without any clues of her looks. And there were only two ways for her position to be leaked. One, someone spilled it, which based on her gut feelings, was impossible. There were three people who knew who she was, and she did not believe Dr. Phillip, Luo Guangying, and Callum did it.

Dr. Phillip did not look like the type to gossip about his patients while Luo Guangying and Callum knew that there were too many things at stake to be so careless about her identity.

So, she was sure that it was the second reason. An alert had to have been triggered somehow, and it was probably when Dr. Phillip did a check on her DNA.

Dr. Phillip had checked her DNA anonymously, and according to him, he did something to her file before so that no one would be able to trace it to him, not unless they did background research on all of his patients.

But still... Xiao Lei had a bad feeling in her heart, like something bad was about to happen to her or someone she cared deeply about. Within the span of a few days, she bumped into that man who was 97% Murong Yu, and that man who was 100% the murderer of her parents... Everything was too much for her.

It caused her to be on high alert constantly, and it tired her out.

Seeing the frown on her face getting deeper and deeper, Han Ye knew that she was caught in some sort of unpleasant thoughts, so he called out softly while gently tapping her arm, "Xiao Lei?"

When she heard him, she blinked and looked at him with her bright eyes.

She then continued with a sigh, "When I first woke up after the accident, the first thing I saw were the doctors, and they had their masks on. I thought one of them was him. I thought I saw him in the room, so I kept screaming... I wanted my dad and mum to come to me... But they thought I was hysterical, and they sedated me... Every time I woke up, I'd get scared and I'd shout... and they would inject me with sedative again... Over and over again... Until my memory turned hazy and I stopped shouting... That was when they stopped giving me injections... I thought I was safe, but they started to plot against me again."

Han Ye got confused by the "they" in the last part of her sentence, but he did not interject her.

"They wanted to kill me... So I ran... I kept running... I was too afraid to stop running, and now, my son has to be on the run with me."

Suddenly, she stopped herself by covering her mouth with both hands.

She had talked too much. She knew that it was because she had gotten too comfortable with him, to the point that it was hard to stop once she started talking.

"Xiao Lei... Are you afraid that they might hurt you when you're out cold? Is that the real reason why you hated injections?" Han Ye asked while he reached out to hold her hand. He did not know why he did it... Maybe it was because he knew what it was like to suddenly be an orphan... Or maybe it was because he wanted to reassure her as her friend...

Xiao Lei glanced at his hand, and surprisingly, other than the initial flinch from the sudden body contact, she did not get upset by it. At least, she did not hit him.

Han Ye had expected to be the receiving end of her punch again, so when she merely flinched slightly and looked up at him with a somewhat confused expression, he secretly sighed in relief.

Truth be told, the warmth from his hand comforted Xiao Lei more than what he could imagine. As she continued to look at him, she said softly, "I know it's stupid, but I can never get that out of my mind..."

He shook his head and said with a reassuring smile, "No, it's not stupid. I'll be in this room with you, alright? I promise I'll be here until you wake up."

He waited until she nodded before signaling for Dr. Phillip and his nurses to come in. When one of the nurses tried to put the IV needle in, Han Ye gently tipped Xiao Lei's face so that she would face him, and when she did, he said, "Don't look at it. Just look at me. You're no longer an orphan who has no one."

"Han Ye..."

He smiled gently. "You have an extremely kind and considerate son, a husband who seems to love you more than anything in this world... and me, a great boss."

Xiao Lei nearly laughed out loud from his ending words. She was about to retort with a sarcastic remark when she heard...

"It's in," the nurse said, causing Xiao Lei's head to whip over as she looked at her arm in amazement.

"I didn't feel anything." Xiao Lei looked at the nurse who proceeded to set up everything in preparation for the surgery.

"It has always been in your own mind..." Dr. Phillip said in a calm manner. He had seen this kind of behavior before, but mostly in children. Their fear and imagination tended to heighten whatever they were feeling at the moment; including pain.

After a while, Xiao Lei started to feel drowsy, and she reached out to Han Ye. Holding his hand tightly, she murmured, "You can't leave now... You promised."

She held her hand up and hooked her pinky.

Han Ye glanced at her hooked pinky finger for a few seconds before grinning widely. "I won't..."

Xiao Lei giggled slightly like a child, and she was secretly glad that he was back in her life again... Her husband often said that she needed a friend she could trust, and she knew that Han Ye was the one that she could trust the most.

The years of separation had never changed her views of him... except one.

"You've never changed..." she murmured while the drowsiness took over. The medication caused her to be unaware of what she was saying next. "You're... no longer... that cowardly boy..."

Her eyes slowly closed, and before long, she was out.

"We're starting..." Dr. Phillip said as he positioned himself below Xiao Lei.

And before he began, he glanced at Han Ye, who was still sitting next to Xiao Lei with his hand holding hers. Even though his mask was on, Han Ye could tell that the doctor was smirking when the latter remarked, "You know... This is like one of the safest operations ever, like something that I can do with my eyes closed. But if someone were to look at your antics earlier, they might think that this is a huge operation with a low survival rate."

Han Ye grinned sheepishly and shrugged. "She's an important friend."
