Chapter 226 - He's sleeping in my room

After all, it was already 2 a.m. When Xiao Zhihao woke up at the hospital earlier, he had barely spoken any words. When Luo Guangying asked him questions, the boy would just answer with a nod or shake his head.

To be honest, Luo Guangying wanted to keep Xiao Zhihao at the hospital longer, but because Xiao Zhihao nodded when Luo Guangying asked if he wanted to go home, he decided to bring him home.

"Who is at the door?" Lin asked as she came out from the room upon hearing the frantic knock on the door earlier. When she saw Xiao Lei and Han Ye, she remembered what her son told her earlier and said, "He's sleeping in my room."

Xiao Lei looked at Luo Guangying, who then explained, "This is my mother, Lin. Zhihao saw her earlier, and he seemed to feel more comfortable around her."

He did not think that Xiao Lei had met his mother before.

Xiao Zhihao did not want to talk to Luo Guangying much, but he would answer to Lin's question, albeit in a one-liner kind of reply.

Lin nodded. Despite her fear of men, she was not afraid of a young boy like Xiao Zhihao as he reminded her of her son when he was young; quiet and gentle.

"Thank you, Lin." Xiao Lei bowed at Lin out of gratefulness. She then followed Lin to her room, where Xiao Zhihao was sleeping.

"I can't believe this would happen..." Han Ye murmured to Luo Guangying as they followed a couple of steps behind them. "Where's Callum?"

"He was at the morgue until quite late. He had seen the girl before, so he could identify her. We did not think that it was a good idea to ask Zhi Hao After he was done, I thought that it was already too late, so I told him to just stay there."

"Where's the b*stard?"

"With the cops. His son was taken there too," Luo Guangying said. One of the reasons why Callum stayed for so long was that he wanted to help Yun Wei a little. Based on Yun Wei's story, it appeared that Yun Wei was not responsible for the accident and that he was forced to bury it. And based on the young man's reaction, it appeared that he was being eaten by guilt over having to bury his sister.

Even though Yun Wei was crude and a bully, but Callum did not think that he was evil, so he went with them to explain the matters to the cops so that the young man would not be punished too badly for his part in it.

...

Xiao Lei sat next to her sleeping son and sighed. Xiao Zhihao was frowning and mumbling things while sleeping, and there were tears rolling down from the corners of his eyes.

It hurt Xiao Lei's heart to see her son suffering from a loss. She knew firsthand what it was like to lose someone dear to her.

"You can stay here for tonight," Lin said with a soft voice. When Xiao Lei looked up at her, Lin added, "Let the boy rest. I'll stay in my son's room."

"Thank you," Xiao Lei said softly and nodded at Lin.

Once Lin left, Luo Guangying brought some fresh clothes and new toothbrushes for Xiao Lei and Han Ye. He then left them alone.

"If I had known---" Xiao Lei said as she reached in to wipe the tears away from Zhihao's cheeks.

Before she could finish her words, she was interrupted by Han Ye.

"How would you have known?" he said softly. "Just like I didn't know about your scars..."

She sighed and took her son's hand in hers. "I'm sorry, Zhihao... Mum's here, alright? Don't be scared."

....

When it was still early in the morning, Xiao Zhihao woke up before everyone else. With the help of the light coming in from the cracks among the heavy curtains, he saw that he was in a foreign room.

Xiao Zhihao frowned. He felt confused at the moment, and he was unsure of where he was at the moment.

When he looked down and saw his mother sleeping next to him while holding his hand, he tried to think of what happened yesterday.

"I thought she won't be back until later?" he murmured to himself. Using his right hand, he wanted to pull the blanket up so that his mother would not feel cold, but he then noticed that his right hand was bandaged.

That was when he remembered everything.

"It wasn't a dream..." he thought as he looked at his bandaged hand. He clenched his jaws to prevent himself from crying. The image of Yun Qi's decomposed hand flashed by his mind, and he tightened his grip on his mother's hand, causing her to jerk away.

When she woke, Xiao Lei immediately placed both her hands on her son's face as she asked in a soft voice, "Zhi Hao, are you alright?"

Xiao Zhihao looked at his mother with a pained expression. He wanted to cry, but he was also at the age where he did not want his mother to see him cry.

Xiao Lei felt worried when he did not answer, and she pulled him into a hug. As she gently rubbed his back, she said, "I'm here, Zhi Hao..."

She hated the fact that her son had to find out this way, and she clenched her fists unconsciously as she thought about the moment her son dug his best friend's dead body out of the soil. She hated that she was not there for him.

Xiao Lei frowned when she felt that his body was a little warm from the hug, so she immediately released him so that she could take his temperature. Placing the back of her hand against his forehead, she gasped when she felt his temperature. "You're burning up!"

Xiao Zhihao placed a hand on his neck, and he could feel the heat. "It was raining..." he mumbled.

Xiao Lei felt that it was mostly caused by shock and stress, but she did not say anything. "Let's take you to the doctor."

"No..."

Xiao Zhihao shook his head. He then looked at his mother and said softly, "I just want to go home."

Xiao Lei looked at her son's eyes, which seemed to have aged slightly, and nodded with a sad expression. "Alright. Let's go home. I'll cook something for you."

Xiao Zhihao nodded. He was walking toward the en suite bathroom when he suddenly turned back and went to hug his mother again.

There was nothing spoken between them. Xiao Zhihao merely hugged his mother tightly.

"It's alright... I'm fine... I'm here with you. Mr. Luo said that once the investigation is completed, he will help to bury Yun Qi."

Xiao Zhihao nodded once. He did not let his mother go for a long time. Even if he acted brave and calm most of the time, but he was still a twelve-going-on-thirteen teenage boy.

When Xiao Zhihao finally went to freshen up, Xiao Lei looked around the room. She was trying to find Han Ye. She did not talk to him much last night since she was worried over her son and did not want to wake Xiao Zhihao up. But she recalled that Han Ye was in the room right until she fell asleep.
