That evening, Bai Zhen Zhen returned home with Huo Xiang.
When they got home, Father Bai and Yang Ping Su happened to be having dinner.
Because she said that she would come home late today, there was no dinner prepared for her.
As soon as he saw that Zhen Zhen had returned, Father Bai immediately asked: “You’re back so early? Have you eaten?”
Bai Zhen Zhen avoided the question, saying: “Dad, I’m getting married.”
Father Bai was so shocked that the chopsticks fell out of his hands.
Yang Ping Su shouted at the top of her lungs: “Married?! You don’t even have a boyfriend, who are you getting married with?!”
Her thoughts immediately turned to the big boss she had previously met in the hospital, continuing: “Don’t tell me you managed to hook up with that big boss? He’s really willing to marry you? I thought he was just speaking casually.”
Bai Zhen Zhen didn’t even spare Yang Su Ping a glance, speaking directly to her father: “Dad, I know it’s a bit sudden, but Huo Xiang and I really love each other. I also hope to receive your blessing.”
“Yes, Uncle Bai, I truly love Zhen Zhen from the bottom of my heart, and wish to take care of her for the rest of my life.” Huo Xiang added on sincerely.
Actually, Bai Zhen Zhen could have secretly snuck out her family register and gone to register for marriage with Huo Xiang. But her character setting in the book was a filial daughter. If she was to get married, it was definitely after receiving the blessing of her father.
Thinking about how Father Bai got along swimmingly well with Huo Xiang, Bai Zhen Zhen decided to inform her “father” of her decision in advance.
“Wh-What?! Bai Zhen Zhen, you want to marry him?!” Yang Ping Su was incredulous.
The surprised on Father Bai’s face slowly ebbed when he heard Huo Xiang’s name. He secretly breathed a sigh of relief. After all, he was quite appreciative of Huo Xiang.
However, his daughter’s marriage was a major event in her life, so he couldn’t be careless about it.
“Lil’ Huo…” Father Bai looked at Huo Xiang, “Why did you and Zhen Zhen suddenly think about getting married?”
Huo Xiang responded: “Actually, Zhen Zhen and I fell in love with each other at first sight. After getting to know each other for a few days, we became more assured of our feelings towards each other. Having found a job today, I took the opportunity of that happy occasion to propose to Zhen Zhen and she, she agreed…”
Huo Xiang finished his words with a shy expression.
Bai Zhen Zhen silently gave him a thumbs up.
“You found a job?” Father Bai asked, “Is it in the same company as Zhen Zhen? Is your position stable?”
“Dad!” Bai Zhen Zhen walked over and sat beside Father Bai, “Don’t ask so many questions. I’m all grown up. Since I have my heart set on him, how could I not know everything about him? Don’t worry, our jobs are both very stable. Though we may not be rich, but it’s definitely enough to be filial to you!”
Father Bai held Bai Zhen Zhen’s hand tenderly, emotionally saying: “I’m not testing your filial piety. I’m already over fifty years old, in addition to my illness. I’m thankful just to live well every day. You’re my daughter, barely past twenty years old, still in your prime. Though I cannot give you much, but I can still help you gatekeep, to make sure that your other half is someone who is capable of giving you happiness, who can protect you for the rest of your life… If not, when I leave one day…”
“Dad, stop saying nonsense.”
At this moment, Bai Zhen Zhen suddenly felt choked up.
It was only at this moment that she finally felt that she was Father Bai’s “daughter”.
“Lil’ Huo, come here…” Father Bai glanced at Huo Xiang.
Huo Xiang walked over to Bai Zhen Zhen’s side. As the sofa was too small, only able to accommodate Father Bai and Bai Zhen Zhen, he could only obediently squat on one side, looking like he was waiting to be disciplined, staring at Father Bai with a pair of watery eyes.
“Though I have only known you for a few days, but I can tell that you are a good person.” Father Bai stretched out a hand, holding Huo Xiang’s hand, “If you want to date Zhen Zhen, I will definitely support you. But if you want to marry her… The two of you have just met, shouldn’t you take more time to understand each other?”
Huo Xiang replied: “Uncle, when it comes to emotions, doesn’t it come down to fate? Some people can fall deep in love with just a single look, but others remain friends even after a lifetime of understanding each other. Zhen Zhen and I made this decision after careful consideration, and we decided that we wanted to cherish this fate.”
“Uncle, I know what you are worried about. You’re afraid that I’ve just found a job and that I don’t have the ability to let Zhen Zhen live well. But please believe in me, this is all temporary. With hard work and effort, one can achieve anything. I will definitely strive to improve our future. If worse comes to worst, even if I starve and freeze to death, I will not let Zhen Zhen suffer.” Huo Xiang swore, his gaze unyielding.
Despite knowing that these were all cliches, Bai Zhen Zhen was still moved.
What surprised her even more was that Huo Xiang was just a random passerby, yet he could speak so glibly! If he had the male lead halo, it would be even more impressive. Everyone on scene would burst into tears!
Father Bai sunk into silence for a moment, before slowly nodding: “Ok! After hearing your words, I can finally rest assured.”
It seems that he was also moved by Huo Xiang’s sincerity.
“Old Bai, you agreed just like that?!” Yang Ping Su lashed out, shooting looks at Father Bai, “According to our custom, when the man comes to the woman’s house to propose, shouldn’t they bring… a betrothal gift…”
“We’ve bought so many things in the morning, isn’t it enough to block your mouth?” Bai Zhen Zhen shot back unceremoniously.
Yang Ping Su wanted to refute, but considering that her monthly allowance of two thousand dollars was given to her by Bai Zhen Zhen, she swallowed her words again.
“Uncle Bai, Aunty Yang, don’t worry.” Huo Xiang stood up, sincerely stating, “I will definitely provide the betrothal gifts and dowry before the wedding ceremony.”
Wedding ceremony?!
Bai Zhen Zhen was taken aback. Were they holding a wedding ceremony?!
Huo Xiang winked at Bai Zhen Zhen, indicating that this was just a way to stall for time. Bai Zhen Zhen ultimately remained silent after understanding Huo Xiang’s intentions.
“Alright, then.” Father Bai pulled Bai Zhen Zhen up, before placing Bai Zhen Zhen’s hand onto Huo Xiang’s palm, “Since the two of you are determined, as a father, I give you my blessings!”
“Thank you, Uncle Bai!” Huo Xiang held Bai Zhen Zhen’s hand, responding elatedly.
“Thank you, dad.” Bai Zhen Zhen’s heart was full of mixed emotions.
“With your blessings, Zhen Zhen and I will certainly happy. Please rest assured, I will work hard to give her a better life.” Huo Xiang said emotionally, “By the way, Uncle Bai, Zhen Zhen and I plan to get the marriage certificate tomorrow.”
“Not tomorrow.” Father Bai instantly shot him down.
Bai Zhen Zhen and Huo Xiang looked at each other.
They were both uneasy, afraid that Father Bai had regretted his decision.
Their fears were met with Father Bai’s smile, “It’s Sunday tomorrow. The Civil Affairs Bureau will only reopen the day after.”
****
Huo Xiang accompanied Father Bai for a while, before he needed to go home.
Bai Zhen Zhen walked him down.
While walking, Huo Xiang lamented to Bai Zhen Zhen: “I didn’t expect things to go so smoothly! Ah, Father Bai sure is a good father, I almost wanted to kneel down to him in respect just now…”
“Stop talking nonsense.” Bai Zhen Zhen spat out her words, but her tone held amusement, “Someone who pretends to be pitiable after reaping the benefits, only you would do so!”
Huo Xiang pursed his lips, continuing: “But Zhen Zhen, trust me. Betrothal gifts and whatnot, I will make up for it in a few days! I will never let that stepmother of yours look down on us! Oh, right, and that hypocritical younger sister. I will definitely take the opportunity to set them straight!”
Bai Zhen Zhen couldn’t help laughing: “Hahaha! Why is your resentment so strong?! Like a little daughter-in-law!”
“What daughter-in-law! It’s obviously them who bullied my wife!” Huo Xiang spat out hatefully.
The smile on Bai Zhen Zhen’s face gradually faded.
Though she was moved by his words, she still had to remind Huo Xiang of their relationship: “It’s just the two of us here, you don’t have to continue the act. I’m grateful that you’re willing to help me, but we’ve already agreed to go our separate ways after the marriage.”
Huo Xiang raised his eyebrows: “I know, I was just kidding!”
They reached the bottom of the block. Before leaving, Bai Zhen Zhen reiterated: “You’re clear on the terms of the agreement between you and I?”
Huo Xiang nodded: “Yes. Firstly, our marriage is just in name. Other than special circumstances, the two of us are not to engage in any intimate contact. Secondly, both parties do not interfere with each other. They cannot use the marriage to force the other party to do something against their will. Thirdly, you will pay me a sum of money, and I will record the amount and date clearly.”
“Also,” Bai Zhen Zhen added, “The last thing you have to take note of is that if any party breaches the agreement, or causes harm to the other party, the offending party will have to compensate the other party… one million dollars.”
“One million dollars?!” Huo Xiang subconsciously shouted.
“Why? Do you feel it’s too much? As long as you don’t breach the agreement, it’s just a number.”
Huo Xiang’s lips curled up into a meaningful smile: “Yes, it’s just a number…”
“Then it’s settled,” Bai Zhen Zhen pressed her lips together in a smile, “I’ll have to trouble you to draft the agreement tomorrow and print out two sets. At 9am tomorrow, we will meet at the Civil Affairs Bureau… Oh, right. You’re an orphan, how will you settle your family register?”
“I’m an orphan, but I’m not born from nothing! What problems could there be with my family register?!” Huo Xiang rolled his eyes, “I was adopted by the Fuli Orphanage. When I moved out and started working, my family register was updated to be a single-person household. Though I later resigned, but my family register remains unchanged. You don’t have to worry about it.”
“That’s good.”
Bringing up Huo Xiang’s life experience, Bai Zhen Zhen couldn’t help but feel a little pity welling up from within her heart.
Her face became more solemn, suddenly from her heart: “Thank you, Huo Xiang.”
Huo Xiang shivered: “Don’t! Calling my name so properly makes me feel scared instead! You should just continue to call me Ah Xiang, or Xiang Xiang!”
Bai Zhen Zhen was amused by Huo Xiang, her mood rapidly relaxing.
She stretched out her hand: “Ah Xiang, I look forward to working with you!”
“Looking forward to working with you!” Huo Xiang shook Bai Zhen Zhen’s hand.
The two of them looked at each other and grinned.
Then, Bai Zhen Zhen watched as Huo Xiang turned around and left.
Under the dim glow of the moonlight, his back looked quite lonely.
Bai Zhen Zhen didn’t continue that train of thoughts. Suddenly, she realised that her stepsister seemed to be attending an event this weekend. She wasn’t home tonight, and couldn’t personally hear about the news of her marriage.
However, it doesn’t matter. Those people would naturally know about her marriage the day after.
And seeing how she, the female lead, married an ordinary, unassuming random passerby, those vicious supporting females shouldn’t have any more intentions of harassing her.
The next thing she had to do was to plan her “honeymoon”.
Whether or not to bring Huo Xiang along for it — only as a bodyguard — she needed to further think about it.
****
The weather on Monday couldn’t be better.
It was already summer. The scorching sun beating down on the land inevitably made the weather hotter and drier than it already was. However, the sun today was cooperative, hiding behind a pillowy layer of clouds, giving off a soft sunlight.
It was neither too sunny, nor was it overcast. The moment Bai Zhen Zhen walked out of her house, her spirits lifted — It really was an auspicious day!
At 9am sharp, she reached the doors of the Civil Affairs Bureau. Huo Xiang was already waiting there.
Bai Zhen Zhen was wearing the same red dress from the day before.
Because the dress was stained by the red wine, she had to spend three thousand dollars to buy the dress from the rental shop before sending it to the dry cleaner. After collecting the dress last night, she thought back to how the original host didn’t have any beautiful clothes. Considering how this was a red dress*, she decided to wear it to get her marriage certificate.
— Although it was a fake marriage, it still had to follow customs!
“Hello, darling! I’m over here!” Huo Xiang wore a simple white shirt, waving vigorously at Bai Zhen Zhen with a smile.
Bai Zhen Zhen’s eye twitched as she glared at him: “Can’t you be serious! Did you bring everything?”
Huo Xiang nodded, taking a stack of documents from his business bag. It was the “premarital agreement” that he had printed just yesterday.
There were two sets of the agreement, and he handed one over to Bai Zhen Zhen.
Bai Zhen Zhen read through it carefully and didn’t find anything wrong, so she took Huo Xiang’s pen and signed her name under “Party A” at the end of the agreement. “Party B” had already been signed by Huo Xiang.
Huo Xiang flipped the other copy of the agreement to the last page, before pushing it over to Bai Zhen Zhen.
Bai Zhen Zhen neatly signed her name on that copy before returning it to Huo Xiang.
“Thanks!” Bai Zhen Zhen once again thanked him, “Though on the surface it seems that it’s a ‘win-win situation’, but I’m well aware that if it wasn’t for the friendship between us, you wouldn’t be willing to help me out. After all, how is such a meagre sum of money sufficient to purchase a husband?”
Huo Xiang received the agreement, carefully putting it away.
Hearing Bai Zhen Zhen’s thanks, Huo Xiang smiled helplessly: “Don’t paint such a noble picture of me. I’m doing so precisely because of that three thousand dollars. In any case, it’s sufficient to cover my monthly expenses.”
The two glanced at each other, and walked up the steps to the lobby of the Civil Affairs Bureau in tacit understanding.
“Bai Zhen Zhen!”
Suddenly, a voice rant out from behind them.
At the same time, four burly black-clothed men rushed in front of Bai Zhen Zhen and Huo Xiang.
Turning around, there were another four black-clothed men behind them. The eight men surround them tightly.
“Ling Hao Chen?!” Bai Zhen Zhen saw a familiar figure walking towards her, unconsciously calling out his name.
— How did he know she was getting her marriage certificate today?!
Huo Xiang also frowned, muttering: “Truly tenacious.”
Ling Hao Chen was also dressed in black today. If it wasn’t for the sunglasses hanging on his face, it would be a challenge to distinguish him from the crowd of black-clothed men.
Following him was also his familiar assistant, Michael.
The two passed through the men in black’s “line of defense” and stood in front of Bai Zhen Zhen and Huo Xiang.
Ling Hao Chen asked straightforwardly: “What are you doing here? Are you really going to marry him?!”
Bai Zhen Zhen was at a loss for words.
She hadn’t disclose her marriage to anyone except her family. Initially, she wanted to strike while the iron was hot, and only announce it to everyone else after. She didn’t expect that Ling Hao Chen would arrive at this time.
Bai Zhen Zhen immediately thought of her stepsister.
— It must be Yang Ping Su who told Bai Meng Ru about her marriage!
However, seeing her marry a poor boy, Bai Meng Ru should be over the moon. How could she possibly turn to Ling Hao Chen to stop her marriage?
Bai Zhen Zhen really couldn’t understand this.
“Why aren’t you talking?” Ling Hao Chen asked.
Bai Zhen Zhen took a deep breath and squeezed out a smile, replying: “Yes, isn’t this the Civil Affairs Bureau? Naturally, I’m here to get married!”
There wasn’t a single trace of a smile on Ling Hao Chen’s face.
He said coldly: “Woman, listen to me. If you’re doing this out of revenge for my rashness and overbearing behavior, then let me tell you — You’ve won! I permit you to like me. I will also agree to let you be my woman. From today on, I will respect you, and give you the greatest honor and love!”
Bai Zhen Zhen and Huo Xiang looked at each other, their gazes surprisingly in agreement — Is this Boss Ling a retard?!
Bai Zhen Zhen thought that she had made her stance clear the previous time at the mall, but she didn’t expect her words to go in one ear and out the other. What was meant to be, still came to pass!
She could only blame the female lead halo for being too strong, trapping this domineering CEO.
“CEO Ling, I’ve already explained it to you before. I don’t have any feelings for you, and I don’t want to be your woman…” Bai Zhen Zhen said helplessly.
Hearing Bai Zhen Zhen’s words, Ling Hao Chen suppressed the emotions of anger and hurt welling in his heart.
He softened his voice, saying: “That day, I couldn’t sleep after hearing your words. I don’t know what possessed me either, for me to be so head over heels for you… But the reality is, I can’t give you up…”
Huo Xiang couldn’t bear to listen anymore. He stepped forward, directly confronting Ling Hao Chen.
The two of them were similar in height. However, because Ling Hao Chen had slicked his hair back in an undercut, it made him look taller than Huo Xiang by a small margin.
However, the sharpness in Huo Xiang’s eyes did not lose to Ling Hao Chen’s at all.
This was the first time Bai Zhen Zhen saw Huo Xiang acting so dominant.
“It’s said that it’s better to destroy a temple than to destroy a marriage.** Don’t you feel your conscience hurting by playing a homewrecker so early in the morning?” Huo Xiang’s lips curved slightly. He was clearly smiling, yet the words uttered were chilling.
Ling Hao Chen was not outdone, sneering: “You haven’t gone through the marriage procedures. She’s still single, anyone can pursue her.”
“Pursue her?” Huo Xiang seemed to be rolling the words on his tongue. He reached over and fiercely pulled Bai Zhen Zhen into a hug, lifting his chin, “Sorry, please figure out the situation. Zhen Zhen is mine now. Even if we don’t go through the marriage procedures, no one can ever break us apart.”
“You–” Ling Hao Chen clenched his fist, about to throw a punch.
Huo Xiang didn’t take a single step back. In fact, he moved closer: “You want to punch me? Come on! Even if I’m beaten to death by you today, I will never let go of Zhen Zhen’s hand!”
Saying so, Huo Xiang interlocked his fingers with Bai Zhen Zhen.
Bai Zhen Zhen looked at him in surprise and worry.
She had never wanted to have anything to do with these people, much less see Huo Xiang hurt because of them.
But since even Huo Xiang stood up so bravely, Bai Zhen Zhen also didn’t want to give in any more.
She steeled her expression, addressing Ling Hao Chen: “CEO Ling. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink. Huo Xiang and I truly love each other. If you insist on obstructing us, then I can only call the police. I am just an unknown lady; I’m not afraid. But you’re someone with a status and identity. When the incident goes public, it won’t be pretty for you or your company.”
Ling Hao Chen saw that Bai Zhen Zhen’s attitude was resolute, even going to the extent of threatening to call the police, the veins on his forehead instantly popped, and his emotions peaked.
“What’s so good about him?! In what way do I not live up to him?! Why would you rather choose him than choose me?! You stupid woman!!” Ling Hao Chen roared.
Facing the red-eyed Ling Hao Chen, Bai Zhen Zhen sighed in her heart.
It wasn’t easy being a male lead either. If it wasn’t for a female lead like herself, that confession earlier would have been a big success.
But thinking of the original plot, after the vicious supporting females schemed against the female lead, the female lead fell into danger multiple times due to the male lead’s distrust and suspicions towards the female lead. Recalling this, Bai Zhen Zhen felt that she had not wronged him.
“CEO Ling, I’m sorry, please respect us.” Bai Zhen Zhen apologised symbolically.
Then, she gave Huo Xiang a look.
Huo Xiang pulled her hand, and the two of them walked forward together. However, the men in black were still blocking them. Without Ling Hao Chen’s orders, they wouldn’t move a single step.
Huo Xiang paused, looking back at Ling Hao Chen: “CEO Ling, if you don’t call your people off, I will call the police.”
Ling Hao Chen clenched his fists, but remained silent, lost in thought.
Huo Xiang had no choice but to take out his handphone.
Before he could call the number, a white Audi stopped by the roadside.
“Hao Chen!”
Bai Zhen Zhen and Huo Xiang turned to look.
Stepping down from the car was a young woman wearing a light purple gauze skirt.
She had a small and delicate oval face, her lustrous black hair trailing down over her shoulders and a pair of clear bright eyes. Her skin was fair and a light blush adorned her face.
At this moment, the name “Song Ling” came to Bai Zhen Zhen’s mind.
Though Bai Zhen Zhen had never seen her in person, but she felt that the novel’s Song Ling should be like this.
After seeing Song Ling, Bai Zhen Zhen finally understood her stepsister’s “good intentions”.
****
“Why are you here?” Ling Hao Chen was very surprised by Song Ling’s sudden appearance.
Before Song Ling could answer, he heard a clear voice ring out beside him.
“Are you Ms Song?” Bai Zhen Zhen asked.
Song Ling was startled, nodding to Bai Zhen Zhen: “Hello, I’m Song Ling — Do you know me?”
Bai Zhen Zhen smiled at her: “My name is Bai Zhen Zhen. I don’t know you, but I’ve heard of you.”
“So you are Bai Zhen Zhen…” A trace of surprise and suspicion laced Song Ling’s voice.
As she spoke, she carefully sized Bai Zhen Zhen up.
Bai Zhen Zhen knew what she was thinking.
“I believe Ms Song has also heard of me.” Bai Zhen Zhen paused, before adding on, “And I believe you’ve also heard of the love-hate relationship between me and CEO Ling?”
The atmosphere became awkward.
She smiled embarrassedly, then looked at Ling Hao Chen: “Hao Chen, what are you doing here?”
Ling Hao Chen turned his head away: “This is my personal business. You have no right to know.”
Song Ling’s eyes misted over with a layer of loss.
Bai Zhen Zhen asked Ling Hao Chen: “CEO Ling, if I’m not wrong, my stepsister told you that I was getting married today, didn’t she?”
Ling Hao Chen glanced at Bai Zhen Zhen, but remained in silent acquiescence.
Bai Zhen Zhen turned to Song Ling: “Ms Song, did you also come here today after hearing the news from my stepsister? Oh, her name is Bai Meng Ru, a female college student.”
Song Ling was stunned for a moment, but nodded hesitantly.
Although she promised Bai Meng Ru not to “expose” her, but since Bai Zhen Zhen had already guessed it, she could only admit it.
“Oh, then the current situation is clear.” Bai Zhen Zhen continued, “That stepsister of mine first informed CEO Ling that I was about to get married, to make CEO Ling rush here to prevent it. Afterwards, she turned around and informed CEO Ling’s fiancee, that is Ms Song, to make you come here to stop CEO Ling. So many facets to her ploy, it certainly is a good plan.”
“CEO Ling, didn’t I remind you previously at the mall? That stepsister of mine is not an innocent party. She wanted to approach you and win your favor, that’s why she deliberately revealed news about me to you.”
“Ms Song,” Bai Zhen Zhen turned back to Song Ling, “I know you are a good person, so I don’t wish for you to be used by that scheming sister of mine. There are indeed some entanglements between CEO Ling and I, but it is definitely not as exaggerated as what Bai Meng Ru has told you. She is intentionally trying to cause misunderstandings between us, so that she can take advantage of the situation and fish in troubled waters.”
Bai Zhen Zhen’s logical and sincere words caused Ling Hao Chen and Song Ling to fall into silence at the same time.
By the side, Huo Xiang couldn’t help but see his “soon-to-be wife” in a different light.
“CEO Ling, look at you standing together with Ms Song. Aren’t you a perfect couple, fated to be together? Why do you not look around at the perfection before you, choosing instead to chase after illusions? As a businessman, do you really think it’s right to abandon everything to chase after the impossible?!”
Ling Hao Chen’s mood finally calmed down.
Song Ling approached him cautiously, raising her head to ask: “I heard that girl said that you were fascinated by a vixen, and even wanted to ruin our engagement to marry her — is it true?”
Without waiting for Ling Hao Chen’s answer, Song Ling turned towards Bai Zhen Zhen: “However, I’ve met Ms Bai today, and know she is not a ‘vixen’. Rather, she is a kind and straightforward girl. Hao Chen, do you really like her?”
“Ms Song, you are mistaken. Everyone has times when they act rashly, thus resulting in the misunderstanding between CEO Ling and I. Rest assured, there is nothing between us.” Bai Zhen Zhern explained on behalf of Ling Hao Chen.
“Thank you, Ms Bai.” Song Ling said sincerely to Bai Zhen Zhen.
Bai Zhen Zhen immediately winked at Song Link, motioning her to quickly take Ling Hao Chen away. Ling Hao Chen’s rashness had already passed, he was probably finding a reason to leave now.
“Hao Chen, let’s go back…” Song Ling said tentatively.
Ling Hao Chen gave Bai Zhen Zhen a deep look. But ultimately, he remained silent as he turned and walked towards Song Ling’s car.
Before Song Ling left, she shot Bai Zhen Zhen a smile full of gratitude.
Bai Zhen Zhen smiled back.
She didn’t know why, but she actually felt a sense of accomplishment and relief at this moment.
“You’ve really considered it thoroughly?” Huo Xiang’s voice suddenly rang out beside Bai Zhen Zhen, “Letting go of such a handsome, passionate and rich CEO Ling, to choose to marry a poor boy like me?”
Bai Zhen Zhen lifted her head to look at Huo Xiang, enunciating every word: “It’s — A. Fake. Marriage!”
****
Half an hour later, Bai Zhen Zhen and Huo Xiang each held a red booklet as they walked out of the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Both their faces were brimming with smiles.
To those unaware of the truth, they would think that it was a overjoyed young “honeymoon stage” couple who had overcame all odds and finally gotten married.
On the other hand, those involved had their own calculations deep in their hearts.
“What’s the plan in the afternoon?” Bai Zhen Zhen took the initiative, “Let’s go, I’ll treat you to lunch!”
“No thanks,” Huo Xiang shook his head, “I still have an interview in the afternoon. I have to go back and prepare.”
Bai Zhen Zhen was slightly curious at Huo Xiang’s refusal.
However, she still teased: “Oh, so motivated? A married man is indeed different!”
“Of course!” Huo Xiang accepted it gleefully without elaborating further.
Bai Zhen Zhen shrugged: “Ok, then I’ll head back first.”
“I’ll find you tomorrow morning — ” Huo Xiang spoke up once again.
“Huh?”
“After registering our marriage, I should pay my father and mother-in-law a visit!” Huo Xiang explained, “I don’t have the time to do so today, so tomorrow it is! Help me to explain to Uncle Bai.”
“Ok!” Bai Zhen Zhen readily agreed.
After the two separated, Huo Xiang turned around the corner and stopped.
The system’s voice soon followed.
— System: “Congratulations on completing the second side mission, host! The mission reward will be issued soon.”
— Huo Xiang: “Come, I’m prepared!!”
— System: “Ok, the system will now bring you to meet the lead character.”
— Huo Xiang: “?”
— System: “Your grandfather, the world’s richest man, Mr Huo Zheng Qi.”
— Huo Xiang: “What kind of name is that??”
— System: “It’s like this. Because you don’t originally belong in this novel, when the system arranged an identity for you, the names of your relatives will be related to your name.”
Huo Xiang waved a white flag in surrender.
So be it. At least it sounds better than Huo Shui and the like. ***
****
The next morning, Bai Zhen Zhen slept in. After washing up, she went to the living room to watch TV and eat breakfast.
“Zhen Zhen, don’t you have to work today?” Father Bai asked.
“I took two days leave. I’ll return to the company in a few days, and after that I have to go on a business trip.” Bai Zhen Zhen replied.
She raised her head and surveyed the area, asking: “Dad, Bai Meng Ru hasn’t come back these days?”
Yang Ping Su rushed to answer: “Bright Entertainment Company is recruiting actors these days. Meng Ru has already entered the final auditions. Isn’t she amazing?”
Bai Zhen Zhen pondered.
Wasn’t Bright Entertainment Company the company founded by Song Ling’s family? It’s no wonder Bai Meng Ru was able to reveal the events between Ling Hao Chen and her to Song Ling.
However, it was not important any more. The things to do with Bai Meng Ru and Song Ling had nothing to do with her in the future.
“Wow, this news is awesome!” Father Bai, who was watching TV, suddenly exclaimed, “A person who was missing for 22 years was finally found!”
Bai Zhen Zhen turned to watch.
At the bottom of the TV was an extremely eye-catching news headline:
— 《 Live Broadcast: The only grandson of the world’s richest man, who was missing for 22 years, has finally been found! 》
At that moment, the reporter on the TV was standing outside a hospital, doing a live broadcast.
“As we all know, the world’s richest family, the Huo family, has only had a single child in every generation. 22 years ago, Elder Huo’s son and daughter-in-law passed away in an unfortunate car accident. The couple’s three year-old son, Huo Xiang, was also lost during this time.”
“For 22 years, Elder Huo has never give up hope, offering rewards to anyone who could offer up any semblance of information regarding his missing grandson. However, it was not meant to be, and he had never been able to find any trace of the Huo family’s young master.”
“Who would have thought that after 22 years, a miracle finally happened! According to our intel, just three days ago, the missing Huo family’s young master suddenly appeared at the opening ceremony of a commercial mall! Coincidentally, the TV program was seen by the old butler of the Huo family.”
“It’s said that the power of genetics is powerful. The Huo family’s young master looked identical to his father when he was younger, thus the butler immediately informed Elder Huo. Just yesterday, Elder Huo arrived in our city on an international flight overnight, and finally reunited with his long-lost grandson!”
Watching till here, Father Bai couldn’t help but sigh with emotion: “He was lost for a whole 22 years! The elder had no relatives to accompany him, and the child also grew up alone. Truly, man proposes but god disposes!”
“You still have the time to sympathise with them!” Yang Ping Su glanced at Father Bai with dissatisfaction, “They are billionaires! If I could have such a life, I would be willing to give up the first two decades of my life as well!”
Bai Zhen Zhen couldn’t hold it back, a chuckle bursting out of her mouth.
Though Yang Ping Su’s words sounded ridiculous, but it was probably what most people were thinking of.
As soon as the news was broadcasted, there were definitely more people envious, rather than sympathetic of the family’s plight.
Yang Ping Su pouted, before muttering: “Who doesn’t want to live a rich life? It’s a natural desire in life!”
“I think that our life now is quite good!” Father Bai looked at Bai Zhen Zhen, speaking with satisfaction, “Zhen Zhen has a good marriage, and Meng Ru is about to graduate. I just hope that I will get healthier, and not burden you all..”
Bai Zhen Zhen didn’t speak, only smiling at her father.
The three of them continued to watch the news.
At this time, there was a commotion on the TV screen, and the reporter who was doing hte live broadcast became excited. While squeezing into the crowd, he hurriedly exclaimed into the microphone: “Elder Huo is out! It seems that he has already obtained the paternity test report from the hospital. The truth is about to be revealed soon!”
The female reporter was petite, but strong. She quickly managed to squeeze her way through the crowd to the front row, with the cameraman following her closely.
The camera immediately focused on the face of a gray-haired old man.
Elder Huo’s expression was still exuberant, a few unwiped tears still hanging at the corner of his eyes.
He faced the camera and said: “Thank you, everyone, for your concern. The report is out. The child is indeed my missing grandson, whom I’ve searched for for 22 years, Huo Xiang. I thank the heavens for allowing me to reunite with my grandson during this lifetime. I’m feeling very excited now, but also very conflicted.”
Elder Huo, may I know if you grandson is here today?”
“Elder Huo, where was your grandson for the 22 years that he was missing?”
“Elder Huo…”
Facing the repeated questionings by the various reporters, Elder Huo slowly said: “As for who my grandson is, and what he had experienced during these years, I will choose a suitable time to announce it to the public. At that time, the Huo family will organise a conference, and will invite reporters. However, for now, please give us some time for us grandfather and grandson to reunite.”
Under the escort of his bodyguards, Elder Huo got in his car and left.
The reporters could only disperse one after another.
“It looks like we can’t meet the true face of the Huo family’s young master for now.” The reporter on the TV continued, “Of course, our station will continue to monitor the progress of this incident, and continue to report it. Please continue to follow our station! Thank you, everyone!”
“Tsk tsk, who is that lucky guy? Why doesn’t he appear for us to see?” Yang Ping Su clicked her tongue dissatisfiedly.
“What do you know! Didn’t Elder Huo say that he would hold a conference? Rich people just like to be extravagant!” Father Bai sniffed.
Bai Zhen Zhen didn’t join their discussion.
She had just heard the name of a person, which stunned her.
Though there were many people in the world with the same name, but “Huo Xiang” was quite a unique name. It felt unimaginable that someone else would have the same name. In her heart, she felt that matters were slightly strange.
So, she gave Huo Xiang a call.
“Hey, where are you?”
“Why, miss me?” Huo Xiang teased, before continuing seriously, “I’m in the car, heading towards you. Why?”
Bai Zhen Zhen listened to the calmness in his voice, and her heart slowly relaxed.
She continued: “It’s nothing, maybe I was thinking too much. I just saw a news broadcast, saying that the grandson of the world’s richest man had been found, and that person’s name was actually identical to yours! It’s such a coincidence!”
Huo Xiang on the other end of the phone was silent for a few seconds.
After that, he said earnestly: “Actually… That’s me…”
Bai Zhen Zhen was dumbfounded.
“I wanted to talk to you about it this morning, but I didn’t expect you to have watched the news…”
Huo Xiang was still talking over the phone, but Bai Zhen Zhen’s could no longer hear him.
Currently, her mind had already gone blank.
— The world’s richest man?!
— Her husband?!
— That… random… passerby that she casually… “picked up”??!!
———————
Vicious supporting females: Damn, that slut Bai Zhen Zhen actually hooked up with the grandson of the world’s richest man! Sisters, let’s go! Beat Bai Zhen Zhen! Once we beat her, we will take her place and become the world’s richest women!!
Bai Zhen Zhen: Why is this so different from the plot that I know of?? qwq
Huo Xiang: Darling, don’t be afraid. I’m here! Muacks!
— System: “Ding~ Female lead happiness points -10.”
— Huo Xiang: “…”

*Chinese customs say that red is an auspicious color, representing happiness, beauty, vitality, good luck, success and good fortune, so the bride and groom in traditional chinese weddings will usually wear red.
**Can’t think of an english equivalent of this saying. If y’all have any suggestions, feel free to comment below.
***Remember in Chapter 5, the first thought Bai Zhen Zhen had about Huo Xiang’s name is the herbal water – 藿香正气水 (Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Shui). Basically if he ever has more relatives, don’t be surprised if they are named after anagrams of the cooling water (Huo Xiang Zheng Qi Shui)

T/N: I feel like I spend most of my time searching for synonyms of simple words (e.g. happy, surprised, said) but still retain a semblance of the original meaning, because I don’t want my translation to be too repetitive and monotonous… It’s only tiring because of that and having to find english equivalents of chinese sayings.
It’s quite interesting how rich both the english and chinese language are, but in different ways. English has many flamboyant words to describe things. Like the passage on the sun in the summer, that was my (mediocre) attempt to make the script richer, instead of a bland direct translation of “It was already summer. With the sun hanging in the sky, the weather was hot and dry. However, the sun today was cooperative, hiding behind thin clouds, only shining weakly.” But though chinese doesn’t have as much straightforward descriptive words, a lot of the description comes through context e.g. phrases, sayings, idioms. Which is difficult, but both languages are beautiful in their own way.
P.S. I speak German at an elementary level too. If anyone has any simple German books, songs or movie recommendations, do let me know as I would like to improve on it.
